Who`s to blame. What`s changed for last season . Training on astro, warm ups .sports science , there must be something that`s causing so many hamstrings, knees , thigh injuries. Discuss

Yes if that`s Jak with a hamstring injury something isn`t right in training knowing that he is injury prone

Having a smaller squad means rushing players back. IMO.

Injuries are an excuse for the team just being dog hit

I think it`s just that our squad is so thin that players can`t get a rest. It`s bad luck but also we had a howler of a transfer window in the summer

How big a squad should a team playing in the Scottish Championship with no regular reserve team football have? We have 23 listed on COWS. I`ve asked this question before but I don`t think anyone has ever answered it. Tonight we were missing 8 of that squad and within minutes Comrie`s injury made it 9. McPake said Summers and Wighton were playing with injuries. How do you anticipate something like that?

Nothing wrong with a smaller squad if the remaining 6,7 can carry the load , if they are wanting then it comes home to roost .

"How big a squad should a team playing in the Scottish Championship with no regular reserve team football have?"

think we had the 3rd biggest squad at the turn of the year.

back to the OP, the one thing that might be having an impact is the StPauli game and the short turn around from starting preseason to that.

We were lucky last season, our squad depth was small and thankfully we had very few injuries. We’re paying for it now, we need to strengthen asap, 2 if not 3 players in before next Saturday.

Before the derby the Raith players were out warming up ages before we were and then when we actually got on the park we took ages to start going through drills etc. It just looks really amateurish.

I was thinking that myself. You can actually tell when on the park. We’re so slow in build up/first touch etc.

I don’t think this is all coincidence with the injuries. Even our younger players are dropping like flies.

Anyone who’s run a football team themselves know that when the squad is threadbare, you rely on the experience to get you through it.
Problem is, many of our experienced pros shouldn’t even be playing themselves through injury hence my earlier domino reference effect coming into play and in effect we get even more injuries as we try to rescue the situation.
Unless we have spare money to spend, we are facing a real struggle to stay off relegation playoff.

I don`t understand this comment. When you say some of the training looks `brutal` do you mean the opposite of brutal ie too easy?

The opposition changed then - lower level and majority part time teams meaning less intense games. If you dont train/warm up to the intensity you are expected to play at every week your body will finally catch up…

Commented at the Raith game about the different approaches to the warm up. Raith were well into their routines before our team appeared and began their almost lethargic run about.

There has to be something far wrong somewhere with the number of injuries our team are sustaining this year, it can`t be all bad luck.

We were talking about this at the game also. We were discussing whether the levels Raith were warming up then played a part in them getting so many late goals with fitness levels being a bit higher through intensity of training.

There`s definitely something. Warm ups have now moved away from static stretching are more dynamic nowadays. Old school would have you doing both. Do they warm up and cool down properly and for how long .What sort of weight gym session are they doing and what sort of sessions are they doing after weights.is it more ball work than actually running. All these things can contribute to hamstring, knee injuries etc. Of course it could also be the players we have signed are prone to these injuries and have had them before. This would then be down to poor medicals before we signed the players. There are a few injuries that are just a pure fluke like Hamilton Fisher but overall I thing I would be having a look at training programs

So the consensus of opinion seems to be that the injuries are down to more than just bad luck, our warm ups appear to be insufficient, we don’t do warm downs, ice baths? nope.
Our whole training regime is under question, our recruitment in the summer was poor, we have signed players that have been injury prone, Jakubiak/OHallaran, and the players chucked it last night to a team rooted to the bottom of the league with a bunch of youngsters.

McPake and McKay were presumably overseeing the training at Dundee when they went up to the SPL so there is really no excuse if we are not implementing a similar regime now.

What a sad state of affairs. All the positivity gained from last season is evaporating.

Some of our injuries are pretty serious and a few of these players won’t be fit until the last 1/4 of the season…..if at all. I dread to think where we will be by then. As stated numerous times, we simply have to find a minimum of three players in this window. As with all signings ( these could be loans or short term deals) there is risk involved.

Our season and the future of this club will hinge on the decisions made by the board and management in the next couple of weeks. Another relegation will be a disaster.

So last season, we had the same management/coaching team and virtually the same squad and you could probably count the number of injuries we had throughout the season on one hand.

Are some of insinuating that McPake and Co have completely abandoned last season`s training routine and embraced one which produces serious injuries to players during almost every game?

I can`t be very bright as I`m struggling with this concept.

I’m with GG on this - we had an unusually low number of injuries last season and the opposite this. I’m sure the management team are looking closely at this but I doubt we’re doing much different from other teams.

I recall Stuart Hogg who was an athletics coach for many years talking about the time he went into football coaching and was at a few clubs Dundee Utd, Rangers, Aberdeen and Peterhead. When he got into football back in those days he introduced the concept of warming up and warming down correctly.

Boss man admitting Summeers played when not fit either (hopefully Celtic aren`t reading that!) so effectively 3 or 4 from that starting 11 weren`t fit fully fit plus Comrie injured now as well.

I can tell you categorically that the club does have ice baths which are used by some of the players. Some use them of their own accord, others grit their teeth and only use them when they are telt.

This is not here say. The subject often comes up during our Pars Tackle Health school visits. I frequently ask the players if they use the ice baths and to explain the benefits.

I think there`s a genuine question there though. What`s changed since last season? Are we doing more/less of something? Is it to do with the surfaces we`re training on? Have diets changed? Or is it just bad luck?

We might have got away with the way we warmed up/trained last season as we were playing lesser teams. This is a step up surely? I mean look at the work rate the Rovers are putting in. That Scott Brown they have puts in a shift every game. He’s like a machine and it’s not like he was a top signing. Boy came from Peterhead. I’ve heard their training is more intense though.

That`s a fair question, Jake and one only the manager and his staff can answer, but let me ask one in return. Do you think they would be daft enough to continue with whatever innovations they`d brought in this season if the number of injuries kept mounting up after every game?

On the subject of training regimes, i attended the open training session as i always do when they are available , on talking to a fellow Pars fan i remarked that
i thought that it was all a bit easy and relaxed no intensity to it , he said he was thinking the same, i dont know if it was just because it was an open day but it certainly wasn,t impressive.

That`s partly my point, GG. The suggestion seems to be the coaches are doing something wrong, but if it was something simple like swapping from grass to astro (or vice versa) they`re not exactly going to keep with it!

My view is what`s happened is some players over-extended themselves last season and we`re playing with niggles. That`s come back to bite them this season.

We need either some signings or some loans to take the pressure off these guys.
