One of my boyhood heroes and one of the all-time great Italian goalscorers has passed away today.

Aside from his goalscoring exploits for the national team, Riva almost single handedly brought the Scudetto to Sardinia with Cagliari in 1970 - a feat similar to a team like Arbroath winning the SPFL. Riva then refused lucrative offers from the likes of Juventus, preferring to remain a big fish with the island club.

Was really just a bit too young to see him in his pomp

My God! I almost sh@t when I read that.
Thought for a moment it was our dear friend on here. Thankfully not though.
RIP to the other GG Riva. A while ago I read up on him, and he seems to have been a brilliant player, who possibly would have been a bigger name if he hadn`t stuck by his club. Fair play to him, a life well lived

I agree with the others who were taken aback by the title of this thread. I’m glad it was GG himself who was the original poster.
Luigi Riva was a star name from my youth and will be rightly mourned in Italy and far beyond.

First time I`ve ever had a wee chuckle while reading a thread about someone who`s died. I`m game for anything, but starting a thread when I finally depart for the Big Fitbaw Stadium in the Sky might be a bridge too far.......😀

35 goals in 42 international appearances is some strike rate!

I’m not sure how true this is but apparently Internationale were so desperate to get Gigi that in addition to whatever transfer fee they paid they were also offering to pay for a hospital to be built on Sardinia.
Sardinia was possibly the poorest part of Italy then with very little infrastructure. The Sardinians protested to Cagliari that there would be civil unrest if the transfer went ahead, they could do without the hospital.

Since I remember his skilful, yet bustling style of play, when I read the title of the post, I could easily differentiate between GiGi and GG. But his memory will linger well in DAFC.NET in the personna of GG.

Italy`s all-time leading scorer. Out and out striker, a bit like Alan Shearer, very strong with fast penetrating runs.
