Great to see Deniz receiving some positive praise for his performance today and hopefully it works wonders for his confidence. I’m sure even he would admit himself he could have performed better this season at some points but I do think he’s a keeper who improves as his confidence builds. As excellent as the defence were last season I cannot recall him making a single blunder when he was called upon. Hopefully the defence and Deniz can get back to last seasons form from now to the end of the season. The next three games are massive and games we should be looking to win to get clear of the danger zone.

Right to call out Deniz performance yesterday RossF - solid throughout and all the hard work could have been undone if he hadn’t pulled that stop off at the end

How was he at crosses and corners etc. ?
That`s his weak point.

The one cross he came out for that I recall he didn’t get to and flapped a bit.
It’s definitely a part of his game he has to work on.
Fair doos though, that save at the end saved us the point.

Great performance yesterday. I don’t think he’s yet played this season with Bene, Breen and Fisher in front of him.

Great saves on show in the highlights. The double clearance from Deniz and Josh at the end too - jeesh.

I think that`s the thing with Deniz if he can improve on his command of the box, he will be a great keeper.

Did his job well yesterday, credit where it’s due.
He’s going to be our first choice keeper until 2026 so more of this please!

Very true. We all know he’s a good shot stopper but I really wish he was coached to command the whole 18 yard area.

Does anyone know what standard coaching advice re coming for crosses is in the modern game? My impression is that in general keepers don`t come for them as much as they used to. Does it change depending on how many CBs you play with?

Wee eck ,when I played, we always expected the keeper to command the 6 yard box ,but times have changed

Rigger, keepers used to come out to the penalty spot to claim them

Could the change in technology of the footballs they play with today affect the goalie`s approach? A lot of shots are now beaten away rather than caught or parried and I think that`s because the flight of the ball is not so predictable as it used to be.

I was taught 6 yard box, certainly anything beyond that leaves you badly exposed, but I think anything beyond 4 yards between the posts still has a bit of risk.
Flight of ball does have some aspects but it’s not the whole story, there’s law changes and the general change of pace of the game to consider but I think the biggest change is tactical based on statistics. I see the talk over parries rather than catching and punching crosses or leaving them to center backs are a similar thought, it’s playing the percentage that you trust your team to deal with 2nd balls and corners over risking a dropped catch or being left isolated.
As I type I watch the Milan keeper come to punch a ball 6 yards out and get there 2nd, the result a penalty which is a .8 chance of a goal, there’s no way staying on his line results on such a chance. He saves the pen btw but my point remains, it getting there slightly late in previous decades as big of risk? I doubt it
I’m going to make a sweeping generalisation and say that those who moan about keepers not claiming crosses tend to be older. It’s the same about their positioning anytime a keeper leaves his box to take a free kick or position themselves to prevent a counterattack from an attacking position you here some screaming at them to get back on their goal.

I imagine part of Mehmet`s confidence relates to who is in front of him. We regularly pass back to the keeper, which gives me the fear at times. The guys yesterday seemed solid and Mehmet seemed much happier. Cracking save at the end too.
