 Recruitment

The close season, short as it is nowadays, is an exciting time for a football club. The previous season`s squad has been pruned and fans look forward to seeing who their club manages to attract to make them better. In our case we are losing 12, four at the end of contract, seven loans and by all reports, Josh Edwards. So far, 1 in, the return of Chris Kane.
The squad was overloaded in January due to injuries and relegation concerns so we`re unlikely to see 11 replacements. We no longer need so many young players coming in for development from other clubs when our own young ones are coming to the stage to kick on - the point of having an academy.
I`d go along with Graeme Souness who maintains that recruitment is the single most important thing at a football club. If we get players who are fairly certain to be first team regulars and improve us we could get by with around 6 signings, 5 outfield and a goalie to challenge Mehmet. So no pressure then on those responsible for recruitment at EEP, there`s a lot depending on them.
The next month should be interesting.

I posted the above more than a month ago when full of hope for the new season. All out the window at present, not a good time to be a Pars fan. In his interview a couple of weeks ago David Cook spoke of carrying forward 15 signed first team squad from last season (maybe including Tod & Sutherland) so not needing 8/10 signings - just quality players. Not much to disagree with there. He mentioned Kane and Wotherspoon as the start of that and went on to say that Ngwenya had been identified as a suitable replacement for Josh (jury`s out on that one at the moment).
Even with the limited recruitment so far, with having that 1st team squad in place we should have been performing better in the friendlies and in the League Cup. We`ll never get as favourable a draw again in the cup and early exit is a massive own goal that is down to the players and management. McPake has to find a formation and style of play that works and gives a bit more entertainment fairly quickly (my own preference would be for 4-3-3 but everyone has a view on this) but then again he needs the players to fit the roles.
All of this will not be going unnoticed by the Board and those around the club and you would like to think they appreciate they have a crisis on their hands. Fortunately it`s still early in the season (although the first game is now a fortnight away) and it`s still in a transfer window so there is still something they can do about it i.e. make sure the 4/5 signings still needed are suitable standard not young prospects or those who need to be given trials to see if they are any good. We still have the bones of a decent championship team but are crying out for reinforcements of the right calibre.
Of the opposition, Partick have recruited soundly and should be around the top where Ayr have thrown the book at it. Apart from that it`s wide open and we could still get that challenge in.
Recruitment is the key and it`s time for the board to step in and do their job. I don`t fall into the camp of those who are wanting to drive out people who have invested in the club. Time though for the board to galvanise the recruitment effort, and quickly.

Did he not include Ngwenya in his list of first choice targets or am I making that up ?

He did. Said all our signings were 1st choice.

Yes, I think Cook said he was, which surprised me because Mcmann was leaving Dundee Utd, Strapp was leaving Morton and Harper (my preference) was leaving Inverness. All had good Championship experience. Got to give the boy a chance though.

Show me any interview where they’ve said a person they’ve signed was second/third option.

Exactly, which is why I don’t take pre-rehearsed interviews at face value. Same with these supporters meetings. Lots of spin

You`re probably right. A bit pointless in having Andy Robertson or Kyle Walker on his list.

Comrie and ngenwya are FULL backs not wing backs. Time to scrap this horrendous formation we try to use and get back to the basic 4 at the back, which saw us have our best run of form last season

I am very much tempted by moving to a back 4 as a default, but our performances when we moved to that in the last 2 games show that its a million miles from a easy fix.

You can`t just change a system and magic it works. The players need to train and prepare in that system.

Imo we have two of the best Cdm"s in the league in Hamilton and otoo 4231 which then gives a chance for rkh to play on the right spoon to play in the middle and I also think mccann should play on the left as he can cut inside to get a few goals from there. Think he plays better out on left than up top and then the striker who ever that would be.
