The former Dundee United and Liverpool centre-half has died at the age of 86. I was surprised to read that he only won two Scotland caps but I suppose there was a lot of competition in that position in the 1960s.

I remember him playing against Italy in 1965 in a World Cup decider, which I think Scotland just needed to draw to qualify for the finals (could be wrong on that).

Stein listed him as a centre forward, Yeats kicked off and immediately lumbered back into central defence. Italy won 3-0.

In the 1970s he also had a short spell as player-manager of Barrow, my "other" club,

Correct, I was there - sat behind Ally McLeod and his Ayr United squad - got into an argument with him when he blamed Lawrence the Liverpool keeper for the first goal - he didn’t like anybody contradicting him in front of his players !!!

You must have been in the posh seats VEE and rather brave to challenge Awwy McWoud in front of his players. I`m sure I was in the Celtic end that night.

My pal’s Dad got stand tickets - not sure why, we were terracing tams.

Had there been been any football refereeing justice Celtic would have been in that final, they were robbed at Anfield.

Then tickets would have been very difficult to find.

This is the sort of post where sammer usually excels, displaying his quite extraordinary memory. I do hope that he is okay.

He didn`t play in the 1-0 victory over Italy at Hampden but, as Stanza explains above, did play in the reverse fixture in Italy. That was his second and final cap for Scotland.

Bill Shankly was always emphasising the physical presence of the man calling him a `mountain` and a `Colossus` and, when introducing him to journalists after he signed, inviting them to go into the dressing room and `walk around him`.

Ron was 6’2” so certainly a “giant” in the 60s
Nowadays that’s probably on the smaller side of average for a centre half ?

RIP, Ron

That 0-3 in Naples was also Adam
Blacklaw’s last game for Scotland if memory serves - blamed for at least one of the goals, maybe two ?

Big Jock had the team lined up with 2 centre halves trying the big Cattanchio (?) tactic he learned from Helenio Herrera while Pars manager 2 years earlier.

The two Ronnies - Yeats and McKinnon !!!

Of course the minute Italy scored Scotland were screwed

Played on a Wednesday afternoon and shown on TV - absence rates at schools soared !!!

Then came the inevitable reckoning and retribution the next morning 😱

I believe I also watched him play for Liverpool against Arsenal at Highbury in a league game in 1968. I was a member of the Glasgow Possil YM youth team at the time, a nursery team for Arsenal. We were in London for two weeks playing against Arsenal`s youth team. I think Liverpool won 2-1. No it was 1-1, August 17th 1968 seemingly.
