Europe`s top clubs complain that there are too many games and players don`t have enough time to recover between games, so why are FIFA pushing this unnecessary, bloated format for a competition that many fans have little or no interest in?

They struggled to find a sponsor and TV supplier for the event with rumours FIFA were talking about paying TV companies to show the tournament.

The way i read it, it`s not the clubs that complain about the amount of games, it`s more the players and managers
Club owners are quite happy picking up a nice big wedge of money that FIFA give them for their support

Money for FIFA, pure and simple. I suppose it saves these clubs from playing “glamour” pre-season friendlies.

Agree, alwaysapar, most complaints are from those at the sharp end - players and coaches. This "competition" was just about bearable when it was a one off between the champions of Europe and South America - although there were a few blood baths in the late 60s as Celtic, Man U and Milan will testify - but now it`s a complete farce. Most of the top teams taking part may not even be champions of their own country, never mind their continent,

Players need to stop their moaning really. Paid multi millions a year to play a sport for a living then moan about having to work for more than 8 hours a week……they don’t even play 90 minutes a match and moan about that!
It’s embarrassing and a signal of today’s real society. No wonder governments struggle to get kids into working when their “role models” are moaning about having to work.

It takes place between June 15 and July 13 so those clubs will still be involved in preseason friendlies come the start of August. Just means the players will enjoy a shortened summer holiday of maybe three weeks max if their team makes the final.
Yes this is a pointless competition but I have zero sympathy for the players as they are paid incredibly well, some making more in a week than I will in a decade of working.
While this may be a cash grab by FIFA , that is an organisation made up of associate members. It is those members , especially those in poorer confederations, that are desperate for more cash. Cash that , corruption aside, is used to build footballing facilities in some of the most deprived nations in the world . I believe even the SFA gets seven figures annually from FIFA although I can`t be certain of that for more recent years.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

The players and clubs involved i have no sympathy. The clubs are actually in favour of it and willingly signed up, while players may not feel the same. However, players could easily negotiate limits on match appearances or events like this as part of their contracts. The players and their agents won’t address this, as they are compensated well enough. Complaints in the media are just for show. Let’s see who the first top-tier player is to claim they don’t need to participate because their contract stipulates it. Elite players have the power but choose not to exercise it. What’s chances on a few muscle injuries and depleted squads to 2nd tier players unless FIFA has agreements with clubs.
From what I understand, DAZN will be broadcasting all the games free-to-air this summer.

That`s true, NMC. Apparently, FIFA have already told all competing clubs that they must field their strongest line ups. How will they punish any club which they deem have not complied?
Withold their appearance fees perhaps?

Christ knows what FIFA will come up with 🤷🏻♂️
You cant just force clubs and fans to buy into it but if it’s promoted right and there’s enough of a reward for winning it-fans will buy into, people will watch then the clubs will fully engage in it.
Maybe the teams involved should get a percentage of profit instead of a fixed fee?🤷🏻♂️

The reality is though, you can only condition yourself to a certain point as an athlete and whilst these guys are paid an unbelievable amount of money, they are still humans. Too many games inevitably leads to injuries which can affect their careers and daily life. I don’t actively feel any sympathy but I do see where they are coming from.

A lot of the guys that played in the Euros have missed games this year either through injury or a dip in form.
