Dear Pars Fans,

It is with immense pride and excitement that we write to you as the new custodians of Dunfermline Athletic. We are honoured to step into this role at a club steeped in history and tradition. We are fully aware of the privilege and responsibility that come with this, and our commitment is to honour the legacy of those who came before us while striving to leave the club in a stronger position for future generations. We must thank the previous owners for the stable financial position the club is in currently, and we appreciate the smooth handover throughout this process.

. . . . .

With our very best,
James Bord & Evan Sofer
Co-Owners, Dunfermline Athletic Football Club

Welcome to the club. Now get thar cash splashed because we desperately need some better players to work with.

Wish list:

A new goalie so we never have to worry about putting Mehmet back I`m.

We can live with the defense for the rest of the season.

A new striker to either compete with Kane or work with him.

Maybe some wingers or a utility midfielder,or someone creative.

Thank you.

Overall I’m cautiously optimistic.

“No quick fix” means they probably aren’t wettingmillions into the first team immediately but this could still be good if they are committed to putting a few quid in and continuous improvement. They havre stated their goal is to get us playing at the highest level so an eventual return to the top flight is in their plans.

Let’s see what happens.

As stated by others above I’d love to see a goal scorer come in to work with Kane and a goalie of our own so Mehmet can be permanently kept out of the team. A left winger could be useful too.

Welcome to the club lads, try a steak bridie.

I asked the exact same question on Facebook and was told it was all relevant because we’re investing in the youth academy but surely when a business is losing money it’s not in a strong financial position? tbh the opening paragraph stinks of David cook

We do not know the current financial position of the club.

We made a £1m loss the financial year ending 31/05/2023. It could have been a planned loss to get the training ground started, only the board knows that.

The accounts for the financial year ending 31/05/2024 haven`t been published yet (probably will be next month) and then we will know how we performed financially last season.

"We do not know the current financial position of the club."

When the German major league professional beancounters were parachuted in to join the board a few months ago that suggested the club was not in an ongoing healthy financial position.

The results for 2023/2024 will indeed confirm/refute.

One aspect of Cook’s role I’ve never understood is his dual role as Chairman and Chief Executive. I was led to believe that this is not good governance given the role of the Chair and Board is to hold the Executive to account. It’s the equivalent of marking your own homework. I wonder if that relationship will change with the new owners. I don’t know Cook at all nor do I have anything against him but the current arrangement has always seemed inappropriate in my humble view.

With 2 co-owners holding all but a tiny % of the shares there may be no board to hold the CEO to account - Messrs Bord and Sofer can call the shots as and when they see fit.
Can’t see that working in practice though, there will need to be a board of some description where absentee owners are involved.

Just tell us the truth. You`re going to spend a fair bit of cash buying better players and promote your data analytics company along the way.

Sell your data company information to other clubs when we become top 6 in the Premier and won the Scottish cup, attrac. Simple as that.

That was a good idea OzPar, I spent 30 seconds typing some instructions about writing a welcome statement for James Bord into Chat GPT and here`s what it came out with....Statement from James Bord

I am absolutely delighted to announce my purchase of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club. This is not just a business venture for me, but a passion project. As someone who thrives on strategy and analytics, I see football as the ultimate team game, where preparation and data can truly make the difference—and Dunfermline Athletic is the perfect club to build something special.

Through my company, Short Circuit Science, we have revolutionized the use of artificial intelligence and analytics, and I am excited to bring that expertise to the football world. Supporters can expect a forward-thinking, ambitious approach to the way the club operates both on and off the pitch.

Most importantly, I understand the rich history and incredible support this club has. I want to reassure every fan that preserving the legacy and spirit of Dunfermline Athletic is my top priority. Together, we’ll build a sustainable and successful future for the club, focusing on player development, innovative strategies, and, most importantly, delivering exciting football for you all to enjoy.

I look forward to meeting you, the fans, and working alongside the talented team already in place to take Dunfermline Athletic to new heights. Let’s do this—together.

James Bord

Yeah I think it’s clear they’ve bought the club to promote the data analytics company. This really should be good for us because they need us to do well on the park to do that. I don’t think they will spend absolute fortunes because that doesn’t promote their business well either. It’ll be about making the most of a competitive budget I’d imagine.

If the purpose is to promote the data analytics company (which is understandable) and that`s a success, won`t the result be that all the clubs at a certain level will end up competing for the same players? Won`t the influence of scouts and talent spotters be diminished?

The purpose of the analytics is to identify players who will compliment the players and system that is already there and to improve it
Teams all have different players and different systems and when numbers are crunched and players identified then approaches will be made

In their letter the new owners say that they`ve prioritised communication and transparency as central to their approach. Well, they could start by explaining why they have chosen to take absolute control (apart from the impotent 0.16% worth of shareholdings) rather than simply buy the GMBH shareholding. While GMBH`s shareholding of 70+% did give them effective control, having other shareholders did give some voice to local fan interest albeit it could be ignored.
Now the owners can do what they like, when they like and it will be interesting to see what kind of operating structure they put in place for running the club on an ongoing basis. There`s a lot needs to come out and hopefully we get that transparency promised. It`s an exciting time but I`ll not be breaking out the champagne just yet.
I wonder also if we will get a farewell statement from GMBH. It would probably be met with a lot of cynicism but it would be good to hear that they have some good things to say about their time here and also some positive things to say about why they chose Park Bench as opposed to leaving people wondering if they have scarpered with their £2-3 million (?) they`ve acquired from the first available patsies.

I think PUCIC had 60.22% of the shares, DAFC Fussball GmbH had 30% (but with the option to convert their loan to take their holding up to 75.1%).

Can we assume this conversion has taken place as part of the sale? We can probably figure out what effect this would have on the other holdings in terms of percentage share.

Maybe Stanza can put us right if the details are materially different.

The statements are fine. The one from DAFC is quite professionally written IMO (although it misses out an accent in Córdoba).

Of course, there are many questions, not all can be answered now.

What can be done with 99% of the shareholding that can’t be done with 75%?

Having foreign based directors (particularly in Las Vegas) isn’t ideal. Will there be local representation on the board?

What is their approach to the training ground and academy going to be?

Are they going to throw loads of money at us? Because if they do, and we are successful, won’t it seem that the success is down to budget not data analytics?

How are these analytics meant to work in practice? Is the data going to be better or even available, or are we just going to analyse it better? For example, people have mentioned Connor Young as a potential target. How much data is there on him? Can we ask him to wear a Fitbit and get a swatch at the figures produced? Or are we going to say that moving up two tiers rarely works, not interested?

Can the effect of their new technologies be quantified? For example, if, of every 5 players we sign we normally find one gem, are we going to find 2, or 5? Or is their skill in getting the best out of the existing players in terms of tactics? Charles Reep for the 2030s?

The bottom line is their bottom line. And that troubles me.

No not at all. Scouts that not only can understand and utilise the data set but also be able watch and see a players talent will be the way it’s headed.

Obviously it’s not baseball so playing a numbers game at bat doesn’t work but perhaps looking at yards run and successful crosses in combination with watching how someone goes about making decisions on the pitch is the key 🤷🏻‍♂️

James Bord was a professional in corporate banking before he made his way in the poker world - the club`s financial position will improve, however I doubt that he`ll be the cash cow benefactor that you appear to think.

That apart, it was the unsustainable spending of the Calderwood era (not his fault directly) that brought about the 2012 crisis - we certainly don`t want to go there again.

Sorry, I don`t have any involvement with the football club or an inside track with any of the parties involved.

I suspect even those actually involved in the negotiations will be very limited by non-disclosure agreements on what they can disclose about them, even if they want to. And the future management arrangements will be entirely at the discretion of the new owners, although they do talk of "empowering those in key decision-making positions".

However, it`s clear that "supporter ownership" of Dunfermline Athletic is dead for the foreseeable future. The owners promise communication, transparency, open dialogue, unity and collaboration, so we`ll need to see what this means in practice.

That apart, it was the unsustainable spending of the Calderwood era (not his fault directly) that brought about the 2012 crisis - we certainly don`t want to go there again.``

Not about what I think mate. It`s happening.

Surely we can spend without overspending?

`However, it`s clear that "supporter ownership" of Dunfermline Athletic is dead for the foreseeable future. `

Those at the top of pars United killed that concept 5 years ago, it`s not news

That`s not 100% correct. The arrangements put in place by Pars United specified that if GmbH proposed to sell its shares, then Pars United CIC would be given the opportunity to buy them at a matching price (but within a fairly short time frame). Clearly, there was no appetite (or potential investors with deep enough pockets) for that to happen.

Yeah there was an option, but that option was very poorly written and just let GmbH set whatever price they wanted that would out price genuine local support, it also prevented other local support from
Getting preferred status.

Those that agreed to that sold our club out. If they didn`t they`d have agreed a max fee(in the lower end 6 figures max) if it proved the GmbH proved to be the bastards they were proved to be.

Every single person they had prior sight to either deal needs to answer severe questions about why they`ve been happy to sell the club out. They might have been big factors in us being saved, but they were far from alone, why did they think they were entitled to sell the club out without asking a single fan?

Would that not have also put a ceiling on any money that GmbH chose to invest in DAFC Ltd?

Agree with VEE. Our new owners are not short of a few quid, but they don`t have bottomless pockets. One reason they have money is that they don`t burn it or throw it into a black hole. Any investment will be carefully examined before being given the go-ahead, imo.
