Read his interview on home site.
Very encouraging. Welcomes new ideas etc etc
We have had way too many players over the years who seem to have been poor and go onto good things after they leave us. And I think that on occasion is down to poor signings, not because the player is poor but because we ask them to play in a system or alongside players who don’t compliment them or are as good as them.
Wotherspoon is clearly intelligent but if the others aren’t in tune his passes go astray or the player hasn’t made the run. I think Joe is the same. He turns and turns looking for a pass and ends up passing 5 yds or back because no one has made the run.
It will be interesting to see which players shine ( and Joe may not of course) with a new style/pace of play under Tidser, that many of us have maybe written off. On that note MOH springs to mind.

I like Joe Chalmers also, pretty much always finds his man, very tidy player, rarely caught in possession and has a sweet foot.
His positioning is good also, doesn`t just pass sideways to anyone, I feel criticism is just a pile, a lot of our fans just like someone to run around a lot even if they are out of position or getting exploited by the opposition.

Players such as Chalmers, Wotherspoon, Ohalloran and Clay have been playing for years, must have some football abilities?
Problem is that some on this forum don`t recognise a football player!

No-one on these forums knows what goes on behind the scenes and the reasons players do/do not play well. We`ve had plenty players who have moved on and done better/worse than when they were with us. It`s no different to any job where it often depends on if you`re the right fit for that team.

One of the issues with this forum is the same few, turn seasoned debate into eye scratching and handbags. It then potentially stops people posting or starting posts more often as the reading of the same old $hite throwing on most threads makes you fear for some peoples sanity.

Yes he’s not had many intelligent runners to pass to in forward positions and a lack of pace in the team means there’s rarely a defence splitting pass on but in this league where everything is hard fought you need to hard in the tackle and have pace to get back in as well as good positioning to cover etc and neither of these does Joe have. Not great in the air either for a taller player.
He’s not a defensive midfielder for me for the above reasons and he’s not got a goal in him, not sure if he’d be better as an attacking midfielder but again he’s not got the pace to get away from anyone and hasn’t got a trick so hard to imagine that would work.
He looked decent at a lower level in the same position that he’s struggled at this season and the season we went down. Not all players are good enough even if they are played a certain way to accommodate them.

Well Berkey, as one who always encourages opinions on a forum under the one subject matter, I always appreciate your opinions whether I agree with them or not, and giving a different view point is what debating is all about
Unfortunately you`ve taken my comment of `the few` as if I was including you whereas my point and the point that coventrypar was making was in regards to the automatic replies that tend to follow your posts, which of course is no fault of yours
I think you might find that proper debating forums is quite a nice place for me to be 👍

Would agree with this. On the ball, Chalmers is decent enough and can create chances but he`s wasted playing defensive midfield. Too slow and can`t tackle. Similarly, he`s not suited to playing in a more advanced role, you`d much rather have a Todd/Cooper in there who can get chip in with a few goals and get up and down the park.

Shelleypar mentions a great pass that Joe made, when he came on against Ayr and I noticed that too. He does possess qualities that no-one else in the team has. He may not be a ball winner like Chris Hamilton but if he can develop other parts of his game he could be great for us. Sometimes passing sideways or back is the best option. The high press and all out attack is good but it requires expending loads of energy and there are times in every game when the players need a breather.

Good post Coventry Par. One thing I like about him is he never hides and is always looking to make himself available for a pass like Neil Lennon used to do. Hopefully with the shackles off and a manager who might value footballing skill a bit more there will be more movement ahead of him so we can progress forward with more pace. Sensible move by the new manager to keep Otoo in midfield where he is best. Well done to Jo for his performance in a position he hasn’t played for many years.

I’ve got to be honest, Joe Chalmers might pass the odd ball well but 9/10 he’s not been good enough 🤷🏻♂️
He wasn’t good enough when we were relegated last time and his performances since we returned in general haven’t been good enough. Defensively it’s like we’re a man down in the middle of the park when he plays and he’s to slow on the ball when we’ve got it.
I hope he becomes a great player for us but I don’t see it happening anytime soon

I was a big advocate for Chalmers last season given how great he was in L1. Going to say something contentious though, I didn`t think he was great last week. There were so many times he took a poor touch or the ball just bounced off him. I didn`t think he looked sharp at all. He also didn`t have a great deal to do defensively.

Not a fan and really have never been, the epitome of a league 1 player for me.
His best position appears to be midfield and he’s not championship level at that so at left back I’d imagine he’d be pretty brutal.
He has been lucky the season we went down he had a contract courtesy of yogi when better players had to leave and lucky again last summer than mcpake handed him a 2 year deal based on league 1 performances. Luck running out this summer though and it’s the same with the likes of wighton.
This was mcpakes team and they didn’t bother for him, why would we expect them to perform for a new manager? They know they will be away in the summer anyway.

Todd sold him short with a pass and he no choice but to bring the boy down and take a booking for the team, after that he was up against it on a booking and without being blessed with pace Airdrie were targetting him before he got subbed.
Prior to that i thought he was OK and certainly nowhere near the worst today.

if Chalmers can play left back at this level then Todd can play in the midfield.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, a decent season at full back in the championship then in the middle of the park in a dominant team in a very poor league 1 does not a championship midfielder make.
Be suprised if Todd starts against raith and if we get a decent midfielder in over the next week, Todd will struggle to get another start this season. Way off the pace but tbf he’s only had 2-3 decent games in the middle of the park at this level which tell you everything. Pretty sure Tidser saw enough today.

Gordi-b both McCann and Todd are 24 in the summer and the club appear to have still not worked out they are not good enough.
Can’t argue this club doesn’t give locally sourced youngsters a chance, it’s quite the opposite, these youngsters get more chances than you think it would take to show the required ability.
McCann is playing to stay as he only has the option for another year which I think both parties need to agree too. Todd has another season I think.

Joe Chalmers played left back a lot in the early part of his career including at Scotland U17/U18 level although he doesn`t seem to have learned how to tackle. I have missed the last two games so can`t give an opinion on his performance but as soon as I saw we had been beaten I knew he would be one of those that would get singled out. If some fans put other players under the same microscope and were honest about what they see they might often come up with different scapegoats.
He may seem like a League 1 player to some but strangely enough the only time he has played there was that season with us.

I think Chalmers is a decent enough player in this division. When you look at his career, he`s played more games in the Premier League and the League Cup than he has in his one season in League One, so you can`t really say he`s a League One player. He`s played about 40 games in his career at left back, including a dozen in the Premier League. I`d imagine the Premier League managers that named him on their team sheet to play there for them know a lot more than any of us about if he can play there or not
