At the international level, I would go for Brazil 1970. Sublime football at its best. Went a long way to erasing the memory of England 1966... :). I also have fond memories of the Dutch side, featuring Cruyff and Neeskens, in 1974.
At the club level, probably Barcelona 2009-11. Some team that. Real Madrid in the `50s and early `60s were pretty special too. The Man City side of recent years is pretty strong, but not on that level, I think.
At the UK level, generally? Hard to look past the Man U side of the 1960s - Charlton, Best, Law, Stiles... or the Liverpool side of the late 1970s - Dalglish, Souness, Hughes, Hansen...
At the Scottish level, surely, it would have to be Celtic 1967-68?
And the best Dunfermline team? I would say the George Farm side, circa 1967-69. Was Jock Stein`s team better? Or Willie Cunningham`s? And do "Leishman`s Lions" or Dick & Bert`s "get atem" side merit worthy mentions?
What say you???

On the international side of it Spain from 2008-2012 would be a shout - absolute dominance for 3 tournaments running, with a large part of the Barca side in it. Think it wss proven then that the issue with Spain in the early noughties was a certain Madrid legend stirring the pot. No coincidence that when he retired they went on that run.

I was born in 1980, so I’ve only seen footage of a lot of the teams you mentioned in your original post, OzPar. That said, football has changed massively since the ’60s, and while I regularly moan about modern trends in the way the game’s played, I can’t help but feel that, in terms of athleticism and overall level, the current era is up there with the best.
The Spanish side that Dave_1885 mentioned is, without doubt, the best international team I’ve ever seen. They were just unbelievable. I remember seeing them at Hampden in 2010, we were plucky and gave them a bit of a scare, but they were simply on another level. The success they had speaks for itself. Hard to see another national team hitting those heights again… though it probably helped that so many of them played together at club level.
At club level, it has to be that Barcelona team. Folk who know me will tell you I’m not big on football outside Scotland, but even I made a point of watching them whenever they were on Sky. They were just different.
At UK level, you’re probably right with the Man Utd and Liverpool teams you mentioned, genuine legends of the game. I’d also throw in Arsenal’s Invincibles from 2004, and Man Utd’s treble-winning side from ’99. Hard to look past them.
Scottish level, this is where it gets interesting. As much as it pains me to say it, it has to be one of the Old Firm sides in my lifetime. That Rangers team under Dick Advocaat, packed with superstars, was unreal. They gave you the fear playing against them. Likewise, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic team that reached the UEFA Cup Final, a very different style to Advocaat’s Rangers but still packed with quality. I doubt we’ll see players of that calibre in Scotland again any time soon.
As for the best Dunfermline team, you’re probably right about the legendary 60’s side. I was too young to properly appreciate Leishman’s team. My first game was back in ’87, when I was six or seven. I’ve got a huge soft spot for the Paton era, and I hold it dear, but for me, the greatest Pars team ever has to be Jimmy Calderwood’s Cup Final side in 2003/04.
The players, the football, the buzz, it was brilliant. You genuinely looked forward to every game. Hopefully today’s younger fans get to experience a team that exciting one day. Just look at where we finished in the league that year, it was a fantastic time to be a Par and for me, those boys will always be the greatest.

Honourable mention for AC Milan in the late 80`s/ early 90`s?
Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Tassotti, Panucci, Albertini, Donadoni, Desailly, Boban, Savicevic, Rijkaard, van Basten, Gullit, Papin-not a bad bunch?

Impossible to compare teams from different eras - but the best football I`ve ever had the pleasure to witness at EEP was a league game v Aberdeen when DAFC won 4-2.
I reckon it was early 1968, the team were on a roll having earlier demolished the Rovers 6-0 on New Years Day - and a week before the famous Scottish Cup win at Celtic Park.
The scoreline does not reflect the superiority of the Pars - it was a relatively ordinary first half at 2-0, then if memory serves, the Dons pulled one back and resorted to physicality to try and get an equaliser.
That prompted Hugh Robertson, Alex Edwards and Bert Paton to turn on the style aided by Barrie Mitchell who then proceeded to roast Martin Buchan inside out for the second 45 minutes.
Unfortunately I don`t think the cameras were there that day.
The Brazil team of 1970 were almost certainly the best international side.
