 East Fife (A)
Topic Originator: Buster_Brown
Date:   Mon 7 Jul 09:05

Just bought my ticket for tomorrow night’s game. Rough guess, but it looks like around 100 tickets have been sold for the away section so far.

It’ll be interesting to see what the plan is, will NL split the squad again, or are we going to get something close to a full strength starting 11 with the Hearts game in mind?

Can’t say I’m too fussed either way. I’ve always felt pre-season isn’t really for the fans, but that said, I’m definitely looking forward to getting back to the football.

I live in Leven and also got caught in the traffic on Standing Stand Road when driving to Kirkcaldy - thought I’d be clever and came back the coast road - roadworks there as well 🤣

I assume these will all be clear tonight but I’d suggest coming via Glenrothes to be on the safe side.

Wouldnt it be nice if we had a ferry service on the forth.
Nothing big, just wee boats maybe 40ish passengers going up and down the cost, and occasionally across the other side.

Would be good just for pleasure trips and the coastal villages would benifit.

Obviously not financially viable or it would be happening. Or is it just a lack of suitable landing requirements.

I remember visiting villages on the Thunnersee (sp) in switzerland using circulating boats.
Neen on the boats that do trips from Queensferry too.

I think its something I woul do often for a wee day oot.

There`s talk of a hovercraft service between Fife and Edinburgh I think. Such a service was trialled briefly about 20 years ago but didn`t last.

This isn’t the strongest 11. NL said he was giving those who hadn’t had many minutes a run out. But on saying that both Bene and Fisher look miles off it. Davidson looked far more assured on Saturday.

Pretty poor half. bene and fisher look very ropey. Amade again looks decent, gilmour fairly quiet but superb goal. Not sure they make the most balanced midfield pairing though. Two young wing backs don`t look ready for thr first team on this showing. Front three quiet quiet, but cooper and young both had flashes, todd less so.

Alfons looks the standout to me. Bene and Fisher not a good pairing. Fash is giving them a difficult time. Getting caught too much offside. Young and Cooper need to time runs better but will come with game time. East Fife had the better of tge half despite the goal

That pretty much sums up the First Hakf for me, although I would say Amade looks better than decent, like what I have seen of him so far, loves to open his body up and switch the play. Loook forward to seeing more of him.

Defence doesn’t look great but I’d be hoping come the start of the season, Bene and Fisher weren’t starters. Midfield is okay I could see the two of them working together with Otoo or TOB to try push forward a bit. Quiet upfront but cooper isn’t a striker surprised he’s been played there last two games. Todd’s been ineffective which is disappointing

the team sheet would say trialist as thats what new signings and re-signings are currently due to problems with the SFA system, quite a backlog apparently which could be fun come the weekend for all teams.

need new signings but get on the phone to Tod`s agent now and start talking about an extension.

Take a bow John Tod. What a preseason he is having.
He’s a starter in the back 3 and he can spot space to run into. Strong and can pick a pass… he did one 40 yard one that was sublime.
Amade always wants the ball and missed only one pass/tackle.
A few off it .. KRH, Bene , Fisher.
Loving the 3 great goals - that was missing last year ( except Kanes of course lol)
Looked to me as soon as East Fife scored Lenny was asking the EF coach about the scorer.

Very decent run out tonight. Apart from one slip up, Amade looks a real prospect. Always picked his pass. Cooper impressive as well first half.
You could see the subs were the main players and it showed with John Tod very impressive.
He’s a double of his dad for sure.
Think he’ll be a starter this season.

Much better second half and I think more of our likely starting 11.

As others have said Davidson and Tod looked far better than Bene and Fisher. Tod in particular looked great - so much like his dad, winning possession and striding into midfield to set up an attack. Otoo played well at LWB, and perhaps NL is really trying to focus him on that position.

Big plus was that Kane looked sharp, took him goal well and was lively in general. He has such good close control and was characteristically good and closing down and nicking possession.

KRH had a couple of decent crosses and played fine but I`m still not convinced he can make a starting RWB.

Sutherland was a little disappointing, probably needs another loan.

Bray was lively without yet quite showing what we all hope he will bring to the team.

Quite promising overall. Strongest 11 at the moment might be something like

New Goalkeeper (Tobi or another)

JCM (is he injured?) Davidson, Ngwenya/J. Tod

KRH/new RWB, Amade, TOB/Gilmour/Hammy, Otoo

TOB/Cooper/Andy Tod (is he injured?)/

Young, Kane

Still need more starters in the door, but on the plus side there are also other youngsters who look like they will develop well with time off the bench and/or on loan for half a season.

DAFCinBK …. How can Andy Tod be in your starting 11 when he hasn’t kicked a ball so far preseason…. He played 20 mins in the last game of the season
Mehmet has been fine and we dont have another keeper
JCM isn’t injured just rested after lots of minutes

For me …
Mehmet
JCM
Davidson
J Tod
Otoo
Amade
TOB
Gilmour
Kane
Cooper
Young
That’s the best of preseason starting.

Sorry, this is of course only my opinion and I`m fully aware of being in the minority on dot.net, but I really don`t understand why so many believe Deniz should be "understudy" to a 22 year old who is about 4th or 5th choice goalkeeper for Celtic.

Coventry- happy with your starting 11 based on who we actually have a present. Andy Tod I listed as a possibility in the 10 role, based on potential. I`m hopeful he could grow into a starter there over the course of the next couple of seasons.

Hunter- you`re easily scared if that list gives you the fear. It`s not championship winning, but it`s a promising group given where we are, just under a month from first league game, in a season where we want to improve and be competitive, before challenging the following season. They are looking to completely refresh the squad, so it`s hardly surprising that it`s not quite there for the super early cup games.

I`ll no doubt get banned from .net for saying so, but I feel optimistic at this point. I think we are likely to learn a lesson at tynecastle, but let`s see how we do in the other games, and who we bring in before the first league game.

Citizen - i think honestly it is because Denis seems like a goalie with fragile confidence and the defence have often played like they dont have confidence in him behind them. Tobi grew into a very promising goalie through last season and it feels like he will continue to develop. He obviously needs first team football to do so, and could ultimately make us money.

Denis seems like a lovely bloke, and he has had good games for us, but equally he`s let in a decent number of soft goals. That inconsistency cost us quite a few points until tobi took over.

Deniz signed for us when he was just shy of 28 years old and he`d only started about 25 senior games in his whole career up to that point. He`s been dropped a few times in his 4 years here & he`s only ever reclaimed his place due to other keepers leaving. I think even he probably sees himself as a back up by now tbh

Yes, I think the last 3 comments, particularly by DAFCinBK, sum up the situation with Deniz, very well. All of us would be ecstatic if he had developed into our first choice keeper, but sadly that never happened.

Deniz, like the rest of the squad, would have been low on conference, knowing week in week out what was coming.
Whilst i don`t see him being our number 1, i don`t think he`ll let us down too much, we`ll hopefully be on the fromt foot a bit more, he`ll be less exposed?

To be fair Deniz had a very decent game tonight. One outstanding save and even came out his box to clear with a header.
If we fail to sign a decent one, I’d be content having him between the sticks in the meantime.

Just home and, overall, pretty pleased with what I saw tonight. I know East Fife are a team we should be beating, and we did, but I thought some of our play was genuinely encouraging, and a few players really put in strong performances.

As others have said, the standouts for me were John Tod and Amade. Tod looks like he could step into the first team right now, he’s so like his dad, and I had a big nostalgic cheeser at one point. As for Amade, I loved how much he wanted the ball and how confidently he moved it around. I’m really looking forward to seeing how Tod is used going forward, and watching Amadou develop, along with Gilmour.

There were plenty of other positives too, but I don’t want to repeat what’s already been said, especially since East Fife aren’t quite the level we’ll be up against most weeks. That said, I think they’ll hold their own in League One this season.

Now onto the Hearts game. It’s just great to be back at the football, and with a proper manager at the helm.

Deniz
Why are we on his back. He is our record clean sheet keeper. Ever. All footballers are confidence ballers. When we were good he was good. We have been ***** the last two seasons … so have lots of our players.
For now at least he is our number one and he I suspect will be happy to fight off any new keeper coming in.COYD

Oh dear, just noticed that Hearts beat EK 8-0 tonight. Can we not get an easier game to start the season with?

Play our strongest team and we will give them a test. Nobody is expecting a victory or even a draw.
Hearts might win at a canter if they score two early goals but if we treat the match like another team building exercise and with luck on our side get to the break even then the confidence boost will be enormous.

Based on the last couple of friendlies, I go almost exactly the same as Coventry, but I`d have KRH as right wing back and Amade in the middle with TOB.

I also hope they get J Tod`s contract extended, looks like he will be a real asset, especially in a back three bringing the ball out of defence. With JCM on the other side, we should be able to build up the play a lot better.

The first half was poor but we looked pretty decent in the second. Scoring some goals, even in friendlies, is another positive after last season.

Still light in a few areas, obviously another keeper is needed. We also need more attacking options, a quality attacking central midfielder (Easton, Thomas, Mochrie....lol) is important. I like both Cooper and Matty Todd, but I don`t think either have the dribbling skills or vision to consistently perform as a 10. Another centre forward as well, Kane & Young looks promising, but another option is needed.

The RWB slot’s definitely one that still raises a few eyebrows. KRH’s had a pop there before and didn’t exactly look comfy, doesn`t look like it comes naturally to him, especially without the defensive instincts or positional sence when tracking back. Not his fault really, just not his role.

The problem I think we have with KRH is in the current setup, there’s not many obvious options unless you tweak the whole system to get him in.

We’re still light across a few positions in fairness GK, LWB, RWB, ST. Long way to go in the window though, and you’d like to think there’s plans bubbling away behind the scenes. Just need to hope the right types are identified, hard working and players who can cover a few positions is a good option to start.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see a loanee brought in late on to plug a gap, maybe from an premiership club looking to give someone game time.

From Ian Brunskill`s post-match interview -

“I think we’ll continue to add a few players to the group as the next week goes on. And I’ve said it before, and I’m sure the managers said it and everyone else, that they’ve got to be the right players. So, if it means taking a bit of time and making sure we end up with the right ones, I think that’s the best bet all round.”

Are you close to any new additions, potentially before Saturday?

“I think so. I think there’s a couple, hopefully, that will maybe be confirmed over the next couple of days. As I say, I can’t really say any more than that. But, yes, we’re hopeful of that. And then, obviously, the game at the weekend is a good test for everyone to see where we are. But, we still need a bit more time to add to the group and to get a bit more strength and depth.”

I may have missed it, but has Kevin McDonald left the Pars? I`d imagine that with Iain Brunskill joining up with Neil Lennon again, "Geordie" would have become surplus to requirements.

I think he`s still with us, GGR. NL has acknowledged his contribution in interviews.

ETA - There`s a photo in the Brunskill post-match interview last night which shows KM between NL and IB.

He`s been in the training pictures over the last few weeks and i think it was mentioned in a statement when Lennon re-signed that he`d be staying on.

It was mentioned the club would be looking for new staff as well, not sure if any of that has happened yet.

2 staff added there.

"We’re still light across a few positions in fairness GK, LWB, RWB, ST."...which is what Lennon said on Saturday.

Brunskill`s comment, Rory Macleod will be one and we know they are trying to get a deal done for Davidson but way he talked about him at the end, wonder if it could be another player he was referring to.

I think Davidson and McLeod could be smart signings. Although I spoke to my Utd mate and he`s never been impressed with McLeod but hopefully we suit him better. Out of the 5/6 NL wants in though they can hardly be classed as experienced signings, I wonder if there will be a good few shunted on loan and these two replace your A. Tods/Fyfes/Fisher plus another proper handful of experienced premiership quality players. That`s going to take time but certainly makes sense and I think we can see the vision.

I`m chuffed to bits with all these promising youngsters signing. Along with our own bunch of young players could lead to a very promising future. If they`re good enough, Lennon will play them, he`s not a pussy like our previous few managers.

I`m not massively optimistic about the league cup, but I`m confident he`ll have the experienced players he wants signed up before the league starts.

Thanks to you and wee eck, king lad. In my defence, I`m currently on holiday and thought I might have missed Geordie`s departure. He`s an excellent coach, by all accounts, and I`m delighted that we can afford to keep him on.

Pre season’s gone about as well as you could hope for. Everyone’s had a fair crack at it, plenty minutes spread about and it’s probably helped Lennon get a better handle on what he’s actually working with. Still a few gaps, no doubt, but there’s at least the makings of a competitive group there. No injuries is always a bonus.

John Tod stepping up has been one of the more positive takeaways. Looks like he’s put himself in serious contention for one of those three CB slots. That’ll do his confidence the world of good, and more importantly, it sends the right message, take your chance when it comes and there’s a pathway there. Exactly the kind of culture you want to have at the club.

Still a fair bit of work to be done on and off the pitch before the league kicks off, but there’s definitely something to build on. Cautiously optimistic.

c'mon the pars

I don’t like to be harsh on players, in a pre-season friendly, however his performance last night was very very concerning.

He played alright in my eyes.

Almost at the start of the highlights, East Fife boy passes him as if he wasn’t there.

Then another clip where he gave the ball away in a dangerous position.

Watching the highlights and Austin had the beating of Bene very easily, once passed him Bene never looked like catching him.

Since his injury 2 seasons ago he seems to have lost his pace and it’s a major issue and clear to see.

The East Fife keeper was Matty Rollo. He had an outstanding season last season on loan at Crossgates Primrose where he won players player of the year.
I was one of his shirt sponsors.
