I`ll start by saying that I`m no tactical genius, but I am aware that some (top) managers have a preferred system of playing and are reluctant to deviate from it. These managers will look to bring in players who can play in their preferred formation, be that 3 - 5 - 2, 4 - 4 - 2, 3 - 5 - 1 or even 4 - 6 - 0. š (Who can he mean?) š¤ Other managers, perhaps where finances are limited, will try and devise a system that suits the players at their disposal. Any thoughts on this?
There`s a fantastic book by Jonathon Wilson, "Inverting the Pyramid", which chronicles the history of tactics, starting with 2 - 3 - 5 in the 1870s, to the present day when many managers play with a lone striker. It doesn`t necessarily follow that a team playing with more attackers will win any given game. I`ll never forget a Parma - Milan game on Football Italia on C4 in which Nevio Scala`s Parma used a 4 -5 -1 formation and Arrigo Sacchi`s Milan played a 4 - 3 - 3. Tino Asprilla was Parma`s lone striker. He held the ball up brilliantly, laying the ball off to the midfield runners, time and again. The European Champions could not cope and were destroyed 4-0.
Not your average Sunday League player.

We are definitely playing Lennons preferred system (hibs pals said he preferred it there too) and on the whole I am a big fan of it. As 352ās go it is a pretty attacking variant as it allows the outside centre backs to take turns to get forward and join an attack.
I donāt think Lennon has found his best 11 to play in it yet.
The missing puzzle pieces for me so far apart from the obvious striker is the wing backs. In the 352 you need your wing backs to be your best players, they have to cover defensive duties but also be able to beat a man, hit the by line and shell good crosses into the box. Kearney has shown signs he is capable of this. Havenāt seen enough of Fraser to say whether he will do this on the left or not but it he didnāt have the best debut on Friday.
I think we desperately need a target man in the squad too. A Brewster type who can take the pressure off the midfield by winning long balls and holding them up. I felt the rovers were too comfortable pressing us high on Friday because we never gave them any reason to respect the long ball.

Yep spot on, fast wing backs who can get up and down the pitch, and a big strong target man up front - hard to find all of that at a good level but it would make a real difference to us

First and foremost tactics and formations are all good and well but a team with some players lacking in fight, like we saw on Friday,it`s irrelevant.
Even when Tod was poleaxed there was no team mates getting to Stevenson.
Case in point for Hamilton starting,you need to win your battles in this league.
Hopefully a lesson learned.

Dylan McGeouch is still looking for a club. An attacking midfielder or winger with bags of experience, but still only 32 and NL knows him! Is he the kind of player who could add some muscle and knowhow to the team under NL`s system?

No in my opinion, where would he fit in?? We donāt play with Wingers, and in Cooper, A.Tod, Todd, Bray, TOB & Carceres, we are already heavy on Attacking Midfielders. I would have thought heād have a lot to offer a club at our level, but for the money heād want along with the assurances, I just donāt think he would fit in or plays in a priority position.

he is a centre midfielder, no idea if Lennon wanted him earlier in the summer but with the signings and re-signings in that area i cant see it happening now unless one of those left.
