What is something you`ve never really understood about football? What makes sense on a Saturday afternoon, but would be daft any other time? What do you "get" about football, but couldn`t explain it to a non-fan?
Stick your "I`ve never really got that" in here. Maybe it`ll be answer, maybe naw.

Why goalkeepers warm up in the goalmouth? They always blame a dodgy bounce when they make a howler. Why not practise in the areas between the 18-yard box and the touchline?

This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

Why are the floodlights on when they`re not needed? I get it that you can`t switch them on during play but why not switch them on at half-time if there`s enough daylight during the first half?

Weather changes during a match sometimes. Might be bright at kick off but then rain comes and dark clouds overhead.
In general though, I think tradition was always to put them on a half time at this time of year.

Why did they not build the main stand on the north side of the ground? Then we wouldn`t have the problem of the shadow on the pitch that causes the turf to freeze.

A couple that bug me.

1. Shirt pulling/holding. It`s got worse.

2. Watching the Airdrie v St Johnstone game last night there was a point towards the end (Airdrie chasing the game) where Airdrie were breaking from midfield and getting beyond the St Johnstone midfield. Reece McAlear was done for pace and purposely swiped the boys legs from behind, yellow card given to McAlear.

That`s generally called a `professional foul` or the player is said to be `taking one for the team`. I don`t think a yellow card is strong enough?

Never understood why goalies are so protected. They are just another player. During a corner, a defender and striker can tussle, but the striker can`t go near the goalie without giving away a free kick.
Likewise, if the keeper catches the ball in open play, the opposition can`t "block" him as he kicks it out. If a defender got the ball, he`s open to being tackled, but you can`t even go near the keeper under the same circumstances.
Don`t make sense to me.

Why are players allowed to steal yards at throw ins?

Used to be at the corner flags but now seems everywhere.

Sometimes it`s so blatant too - I can understand a couple if it`s not obvious exactly where it went out, but sometimes it`s so far away from the place, it`s taking the absolute p and rarely pulled up.

Why teams fanny about on the edge of the box from side to side in the last 30 seconds of a half whilst losing and not putting a cross in and the ref blows up without getting them getting a cross or shot off. Possession stats mean f*ck all in that moment, get the ball in the box and cause some chaos the games done anyway. Does my nut.

Indeed!

We all know that there’s less that a minute to go, pump the ball into the penalty area, let’s have a fekkin go, rather than the turgid pass-pass-pass-pass-back to goalie - punt to nobody in particular and wait for the whistle.

Sure, a long punt into the box results in a goal 0.1% of the time…
But 15 passes across the 18 yard box, inviting a higher press results in feck all

Why after a goal do players still run into the net to fight over the ball? Also why is it usually the defending team that gets a yellow card for it - its their ball as they have to take kick off, so attacking team got no right to try to wrestle ball off them? Plus they still do it in the Premiership even though they know its going to take a few mins to check the goal on VAR!

Why are attackers allowed to push themselves up off the defenders shoulders to head the ball, quite often resulting in a goal? If they did it anywhere else it would be a foul.

Why is ANY shirt-pulling allowed? It would be easy not to pull somebody`s shirt, but it`s rife and blatant.

Why is shoving allowed except shoulder to shoulder?

In fact, why are refs and assistants so reluctant to enforce some of the rules?

"Won a penalty" does my head in.
To win a penalty is to suggest you did something to take part in the bending/breaking of the rules.
Being awarded a penalty, and winning a penalty, are totally different, with different connotations.

if you watch back Willie Collums pre-season briefing it was discussed that it wouldnt be strictly enforced. You do see the refs counting down. There was a corner awarded for it last week at Preston vs Portsmouth.

Apologies if this has already been said but I can`t understand why a team have possession with a kick off and punt the ball straight out for a throw to the opposition.
When the keeper has the ball in his own box the goal is to keep possession by playing it out the back, why can`t this same tactic be used when kicking off? We have possession in the centre circle, surely it would make sense to keep it?

I’ve been curious about that too, Trancepar.

From a wee Google ~

“By launching the ball, teams immediately bypass the midfield and force opponents onto the defensive. It acts as a "pressing trap," allowing attackers to swarm the ball in a dangerous area to win it back instantly.

Losing possession high up the pitch is considered safer than losing it during a slow build-up in one`s own half.

The tactic is designed to force opponents into uncomfortable first touches, long clearances, or mistakes, often leading to quick attacking transitions.

It allows teams to commit multiple players forward, utilizing aerial strength to win the ball back, even if they don`t immediately control”.

But I noted the FA (in England) states that teams don’t need to launch it now; they can play to their own team from ko (apparently the rules changed in 2016?).

1) Why is there a rule about foul throws, when, to my eyes, just about every throw taken is foul (i.e. ball is released well in front of the player`s head)? If it`s hard to enforce, and doesn`t make much difference, do away with it, like they did in rugby with the rule about lifting in line-outs.

2) When 3 minutes added for stoppages is announced, how can they end up playing, typically, 3:45, when there have been no goals, injuries or substitutions?

Proportionally, this would be like adding 11 minutes at the end of a half with no goals, injuries or substitutions.

Just Asking.

As well as that very good answer from Buffy there, I think it was when Hearts played Rangers earlier in the season at Tynecastle, I read that McInnes had Hearts kick off the game and surrender possession immediately to Rangers, so the Hearts manager could watch how his opponents set themselves up and started barking orders at his team to counter their formation
