 Promotion for me
Topic Originator: onandupthepars
Date:   Wed 22 Apr 23:27

We`ve been in the lower leagues for too long already. If it was a straight choice between being cup winners this year, or being promoted, I`d rather we got promoted - so as to get on with fulfilling the club`s aims to become established in the top flight, and be eligible for all these benefits:

1. Greater income for the club.

2. Increased ability to retain our best players.

3. Increased ability to retain our management and other staff.

4. Potential to attract better players, being a top league team with higher wages.

5. Potential for European football.

6. Greater probability of success in League Cup & Scottish Cup.

7. Probability that, even if relegated from Premiership, we should have greater resources, including parachute payment to bounce back up.

The choice is between winning the cup, and promotion - as if they were both gimmies. As neither is even remotely like a gimmie, or even likely, I`ll be c*ck-a-hoop if we can win either, and if we don`t I`ll still be satisfied with our exceptional season.

That`s not the choice, Bertie. Winning the cup wouldn`t come with promotion nailed on next year. That`s why I`d grab promotion now if it was a certainty.

I`d pick a cup win.

58 years without one. Could be a once in a lifetime chance. How many times have we been promoted from Tier 2 since then? As a club the highest honour we`d ever achieve is a national cup, and I`d love to see it in my lifetime. I speak to fans of other clubs (St Johnstone, Dundee Utd etc), especially in light of our cup run, and they all say their greatest day of supporting their team was winning the Scottish Cup.

Remember, if we did win the cup we`d get at least 2 chances to qualify for European group stage football (so at least 2 European trips), so that would be another benefit.

We might not get another shot at a Scottish Cup for a long time, whereas we`re likely to get plenty more shots at promotion.

Plus, the Championship isn`t all bad, competitive league, mostly Saturday 3pm kick offs, no sectarian singing, cheaper tickets etc.

I’d go for the cup win. We still have a lot of recruiting to do for promotion but if we’re on our game and catch Celtic on one of their off days, we’ve got a chance in a one off game.

(The cup win gets us in Europe quicker than the OP).

It’s the Scottish Cup for me every single time. All I’ve ever wanted is to see my club lift a proper domestic trophy. I’ve watched Saints win a cup three times, seen Killie, Inverness, Ross County and the rest all have their moment.

So aye, Scottish Cup over promotion all day long.

And the way this season’s going, we might even dare to dream about doing both. What a season that would be.

Cup win for me.

From memory I Never really enjoyed the premier league as much, eg having the old firm visit and getting pumped, looking to see when you get the other two teams that realistically are the games that matter and for the rest of the year looking over your shoulder at relegation
I just didn’t find the football weekends as enjoyable

Agree about the football weekends. The hassle of parking your car, getting to games, issues with policing, entry to the ground, increase in costs. The Premiership is where players and supporters want to be but the reality of it as a supporter is that that the matchday experience is not as good.

Cup I would say. We are not ready for promotion yet. We need another season to build a solid foundation and shape the squad so that they can perform consistently at a high level. We have proved we can beat premiership clubs, but would need to consistently do that in the premiership. Some players need that extra year to develop that resilience.

Cup all day long.
We should be challenging for promotion every season, anything less than the playoffs is a disappointing season. Cup wins for us are the golden ticket, once in a lifetime.
Plus, as has been said above, Premiership football isn`t all it`s cracked up to be, and it`s likely a short lived thing for an up n down club like ourselves.

We’re never going to win the premiership or a European trophy or not any time soon anyway but if you could tell me if you go up this year you would win the league next year or if you win the cup this year you’ll win the Europa league/conference league next season I’d still choose winning the cup I’m young enough that I’ve never seen us in a European game and that will always be my dream I’d happily take relegation to league 2 and a European game

Lifting a cup, celebrating the Pars and Neil Lennon beating Celtic in a final whilst getting the chance of watching us in a European qualifier? Absolutely would take that over a promotion, as much as we`d all love that too.

Especially in the modern day with the financial gulf between the likes of Celtic to the rest of the league it would be a spectacular achievement.

More than winning the cup, I want us to be a big team again. We`ve been a yoyo team but I feel like we`re on a different kind of journey now, and if we get into the top league we can stay there - forever!

I can picture our men as I used to see them coming onto the pitch, led by Roy Barry - looking like supermen to me! - we were somebody then. We`ve been nowhere men for far far too long. What do other teams fans think of us? Probably to them we`re another Morton or Airdrie. Hells bells - Dunfermline`s population is three times what it was when I was wee. In the top league we could be filling EEP most weeks.

I`m not satisfied wi` being a second tier club. As my name says - onandupthepars!

If club ambitions stay as they are then cup finals may not be as ‘once in lifetime’ that is being made out.

Promotion brings with it more revenue, attract better players, European opportunities and cup runs.

There’s no guarantee we’ll get promoted next season, not expecting anything like Ross County but proves how difficult this league is.

I’d like both, if I was pushed, promotion edges it for me.

Likelihood - think we’ll end up with neither, think Celtic will prove too big a step up and the fixture congestion for the playoffs will see us struggle, probably at the Partick Thistle stage.

But we can dream and how good is it to be in such a position!

I think I`ve seen us promoted to the prem five times, so seen and done that and expect to do so again. This is my 50th Scottish Cup campaign and never seen us win, there`ll be some of you with a few more. We don`t get this close often so need to take the chance while we have it.

Scottish cup win for me as it goes into the history books. I dont think we have any chance of going up this year, i think i am right in thinking that no team as been promoted from finishing 3rd or 4th in the championship so far but i may be wrong. There is just too many games to handle in a short period of time, should be 1 off games making 3 in total but the SFA must have their cut. Anyway, like some contributers have mentioned its not so good watching your team struggling maybe to get results while they adjust to the higher standards ? Of the league above.

“Promotion isn’t so easily forgotten: Martin Hardie, that never 10 yairds, sammy’s tank”

They are the moments tho if you roll one in against Celtic in 100 years time there would be people still talking about it. Let’s say you got to beat let’s say killie since they are in that place the now within 10 years not much would remember it so quickly the thing about the cup final is if you look on the post “where are you coming from in may” there’s people all around the world landing right into Hampden for a one of game that anything can happen and if we win that then when people go back to their homes the news of us beating Celtic will still get spread. You’ll be lucky to see us take 4000 over to killie on a Friday night. To me I would rather win the league outright next season with as you point out something like a Martin Hardie never 10 yairds moment

I`ve seen us get promotion several times before, and it`s invariably been followed by relegation.

So if it`s a choice - which it`s not - it has to be Pars winning a major trophy at Hampden. I`ve seen us beaten there by Hibs (once) and Celtic (three times - four if you count the 2013 Youth Cup) so a change is overdue!

Doesn’t have to be an either or, but if it has to be one then definitely winning the cup. I was too young for the 61 final but saw up beat Hearts in 68. I have seen us lose four cup finals to Celtic so it would be great to see us beat them in a final.

Thirty years ago on Monday and it`s still my best Pars moment (we didn`t win the league or even clinch a playoff place that day). It`s time for a better one.

Edit: I'll leave that there but have a doubt about my playoff claim. It seems unlikely both United and Morton could have gone above us while playing each other.

Cup and it’s not even close.

Winning promotion is statistically far, far easier than winning the Scottish cup for a club our size.

The added revenue and lure of European football could see us build a squad more than strong enough to skoosh the championship.

I can`t believe there`s even a debate. I`ve seen us win promotion several times in my 38 ears or so watching the Pars but I`ve never seen us win a domestic cup. I`ve never seen an open top bus parade through the town, a civic reception. I missed the away games in Iceland and in Sweden. The guys who won in 61 and 68 are immortal. The exposure, the money, the glory, the fact it`s something most of us assumed we`d never see, the fact we could be part of a season that locks out the Old Firm from winning a trophy, all of that adds up to picking a cup win. If promotion doesn`t come this season, it will likely happen in the next 5 to 10 years. A cup final, let alone a cup win, might never come up again. It`s the cup and it`s not even close.

Cup win overwhelmingly for me.

I`m 59, so never seen us win the Cup- it`s a really big deal, I flew back twice from the Caribbean ( where I worked at the time) in the 2 previous finals, cost a fortune, thinking it may never happen again.

We`ve been promoted/ relegated many times, some I forgot about.

It`s not an either/ or, but next season I want us to push for the league, we may not get promoted also- that`s life at a provincial club.

I think getting to the Scittish Cup final was above and beyond expectation. Its a big milestone in tge general direction and improvement at the club. The next milestone is the playoffs which was a realistic aspiration this season in my view. Coupled with the development of the younger players, who hopefully strengthen the squad next season, automatic promotion to the SPL would be realistic. I think we have a good group of players who would be able to compete there but as this season has shown we need a bit more depth. Winning the Scottish Cup not only is remembered more in years to come, but it also brings kudos to the club, msnagement and players. You can already see the difference in the press reporting in terms of the clubs potential. This will filter down into more sponsorship, bigger crowds, higher morale etc. I can imagine every player who has either come to the club recently, or has come up through the system would want to be a part of that. Can we get through the playoffs, its a big as given the number of games, but you have to give it a go. Can we win the scottish cup, well its one game so there is every chance. Carpe Diem as they say.

A cup win for me for all the same reasons already outlined in this thread. However, I can see why some people would love to achieve promotion this year. I am also concerned that, with several key players out of contract soon, they will go elsewhere if we stay in the championship.

For a big percentage of us, we have never experienced a cup win so it is for me, one of my big ambitions to witness just one in my lifetime.
Promotions will always happen but cup wins are the holy grail.
The premier league is so overrated in any case and for those who say we’d make more money there, that is only really true initially as in time, in order to stay there, money needs to be spent on players and bigger wages.
This cup run plus potential playoffs will see close to £750000 minimum in our coffers.

Scottish Cup for me, and it’s not even close.

Next season’s shaping up to be a good league as well, especially with Livingston coming down and Ross County potentially dropping out. Think we’ll be right in the mix. And would expect nothing less.

Not speaking from experience, but winning the Scottish Cup must be a feeling that’s hard to replicate. Gets European football back to EEP too. What’s not to like?

This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

Definitely a Cup win for me too.

Promotions don`t really mean that much to me other than a good night out. I`ve seen plenty of promotions over the years, all good but the following season is usually a bit of an anti climax as the players you loved the year before sometimes aren`t up to it, the free flowing football becomes a defensive battle. The wins become losses. Football fans are so fickle and unforgiving these days too. It wouldn`t be long till they were hurling abuse at this seasons heroes and urging the board to sack Lennon.

A cup win would be a forever moment, Bucket List event

Please kindly desist from such dismissive age related descriptions !!!

More mature fanbase is the proper diplomatic terminology !!!

My great fear is the worst case scenario where we fail on both ambitions.

Those of us around `64-65 will immediately recognise the pitfalls of going for two major achievements.

Arbroath, Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock (or whoever) may turn out as party poopers in the league

Celtic have played the cup final villian three times previously, but hopefully not this time.

Fibbber, you`ve seen two, gramps.

I had to listen on the radio with you in the old folks home don’t you remember?

What I don`t get is how so many posters seem to wholeheartedly believe the Pars are always gonna be a yo-yo team, `Promotions will always happen but cup finals are the holy grail.`

To my mind, our chances of making cup finals are likely to increase when we`re in the top flight.

Some folk are critical of us oldies because younger fans haven`t experienced the Pars as SC winners. Well it works both ways - younger folk have more years than I shall have to see the Pars where we belong - established in the Premiership. What`s it been now - 13 years?

Pars - please get promoted afore I`m coofert! Don`t let me leave the world with only a distant memory of us as a team of European significance.

Cup finals rely on luck - getting a favourable draw, playing teams at the right time, avoiding (usually) the Old Firm, etc. We`ve been to 9 finals in 140 odd years whereas I think we`ve been in the top flight for around 37 seasons? We made 3 finals in our 14 year top flight spell in the 50s and 60s. And of course we aren`t talking about just getting to finals, the question was about winning them - something we`ve only managed twice. So it`s clearly a much more rare occurrence, and even being a top flight team doesn`t guarantee success given we`ve won one national cup for about every 19 seasons of being in the highest division.

This gets done to death on Talksport etc when they run out of content.

I’d go as far as saying I’d take no promotion for 10 years if we were to win the cup.

That special, unbelievable feeling would far outweigh VAR and the tramps (old firm) and the odd top 6 to get another home gate against them.

Let’s go for memories. Because I know I’d take that feeling than a premier fixture against Motherwell.

Do you think I'm the man?

Kelty and John-Boy,

You guys are only reinforcing the very strange idea that the Pars are always gonna be underachieving. I mean John-Boy, if all you can see ahead for us is the odd top 6 and a fixture against Motherwell, then d`you think our 13 year stretch in the Championship quagmire has blunted your outlook somewhat?

A cup win is our name Dunfermline Athletic (2026) on the cup forever.

It brings global exposure.

European football.

Ends our Celtic cup final hoodoo.

It`s an open top bus, it`s Neil Lennon with the cup on the balcony.

It`s Three stars above our badge.

It`s great to have ambition, as long as it is tempered by realism. Including this season there have been 26 opportunities for Scottish clubs to be in the Top Six of the Premiership, and only the "Big Five" city clubs have a 50% or better record.

Credit to Motherwell, Kilmarnock and St Johnstone for their record - Dunfermline should certainly aspire to match these clubs and perhaps with a fair wind, continuing investment and good management, it might be possible, but it`s a big ask.

Celtic 26
Rangers 22
Hearts 19
Aberdeen 16
Hibs 13
Motherwell 12
Dundee Utd 10
St Johnstone 8
Kilmarnock 8
Dundee 5
St Mirren 3
Ross County 3
Inverness 3
Livingston 3
Dunfermline 3
Falkirk 1
Partick 1

A cup win please. Just a bit too young for the 68 win and I’ve been to four losing finals, when we only put up a fight in 2004.

Ambition coupled with financial common sense is tge way forward for the club. Its small steps for me and investment in the right areas - mix of developing younger playees and bringing in talent and experience. We are on the right road in my view.

We’ve won the cup twice in our history, the last time being nearly 60 years ago! Winning the cup for most teams outside the “big 5” is a once jn a lifetime experience.

So I’d be taking the cup win over promotion.

I don’t even think it’s a debate. Winning the Scottish Cup this season would mean far more to us than going up and doing a Falkirk and celebrating a top 6 finish.

Promotion is great on paper, but let’s be real about what it usually looks like. You go up, you spend the whole season looking over your shoulder, scraping for points, and if everything goes right you maybe land 7th or 8th. It’s respectable, sure, but it’s not memorable.
Winning the Scottish cup will be a day that lives in the memory forever.

Supporters who were there will talk about it for the rest of their lives. Kids grow up hearing about it. It becomes part of the club’s identity.
A cup win brings European football back to EEP and all the exposure, revenue, and experiences you simply don’t get from finishing 6th or 7th in the top flight.

There’s also the underdog factor. Since Sunday I have haven`t heard anyone talk about us. It`s all about them and Martin O`Neil. Promotion could lead to a struggle and potentially straight back down again.

Ask yourself this, which moment would you rather relive?
A gritty 1–1 draw away that secured a top half finish… or the final whistle going in a cup final and similar scenes to last weekend?

This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

Why do some of you guys, think it`s either winning the

The schedule makes it incredibly difficult to do both - of course we`d all love to do the whole thing.

For me it`s a no brainer - although we have been lucky enough to have been to a few finals, these days don`t come too often for clubs like ours.

To see us win it just once would be an absolute once in a lifetime memory.

Promotion is good but we can do that next year once we`ve been horsed out the cup by our usual crap draw away in round 3!!

I also think if we get past Arbroath, Thistle will be too strong this season anyway.

Cup glory pleeeeeease 🏁🏆🏁🏆

Scottish cup win for me - I want to see us beat Celtic at Hampden.

The promotion at the midway point we were too inconsistent and some didn’t look like they had self confidence at times. That’s changed a lot and Tbh from the heart I want a team that has full confidence to play in premiership. I think one more year and a Scottish cup win will get the lads to that point.

I would 100% take both if it were achievable but the sheer volume of games … it’s going to take its toll on us. If any team can achieve both it is this young squad!!

There are a whole host of benefits to the club if we win promotion however, we still sing about winning the Scottish cup in the 60’s. In 60 years time I doubt we’ll sing about a promotion.

Silver wear for me.

I don`t mind anyone saying they`d prefer us to win the cup than get promoted this year. But some of the justifications are completely nuts.

I`ll carry on, with my earnest desire to see the green shoots of our recovery lead to the establishment of a vital new era of sustainable and sustained success at EEP. We`re a club with completely changed circumstances to what we`ve had -probably ever. We`ve got, not just a good and improving squad, and an exceptional manager who can take us places - such as to this year`s cup final - we`ve also got money. Goals change games - money changes teams. From Gretna to Leicester. Have we begun a meteoric rise?

There`s absolutely no question that winning a cup is fab at the time. St Johnstone? St Mirren? Aberdeen? But where are they now? `Global exposure`? (ref: groovydave1973, Fri 24 Apr 00:55) Doesn`t appear to have done much for those three clubs.

Folk are talking about losing Jeremiah - why? because we`re in the Championship. We lost Nisbet for the same reason. The Championship is a big limiter. Currently we`re pushing the limits, but it will take being in the Premiership to maximise our potential.

I can understand other folk`s desire for cup glory. Each to his or her own.

Enjoying the discussion. I’d be greedy and love both!

Did it have to be Celtic? Again! It would be just wonderful to beat them, realistically a big ask given the hectic (crazy) schedule we could have in May.

However, although I’ve not heard it from the owners, Premier league and regularly competing for the top 6, Europe and cup semis and finals is my ambition for the Pars. The fan base, stadium and cash is there, while we have to accept that like every Scottish club, we develop and good players move in to greater things.

So in other words you will continue with the everyone look at me posts because pretty much everyone so far has chosen winning the cup over promotion it’s the cup for me as well and to be quite honest I want no part of the top flight until there is serious restructuring carried out 5 out of 12 clubs want things to change but 5 out of the remaining 7 will do exactly what the ugly sisters tell them to do

It`s not a matter of who`s right and who`s wrong though BOTN - it`s a free choice for every individual, and it`s how they feel - you can`t dictate that to anyone, regardless of any majority of posters` comments.

I`ll be very pleased if we win the cup and I`ll be pleased for those who feel they have a good reason to want that more than promotion - a reason such as sharing a special day with others, or just because it would make them deliriously happy!

Much as I would love to win either. Has anyone actually looked at what we are expected to do before the cup final. Then if we get to the playoff final after the cup final.
2 league
5,8,12,15 playoff
23 cup final
26 & 29 May playoff

8 games in May

We don’t have the squad for that!
Please tell me I’ve misread the schedule!!!
My choice is Cup !
