 World Cup squad.
Topic Originator: wee eck
Date:   Tue 19 May 08:50

Steve Clarke announces his squad of 26 for the World Cup today. We all know he tends to stay loyal to his tried and trusted players but the extended squad number gives him some scope to introduce less familiar faces.

We still seem light in the striking department and it seems Tommy Conway will miss out through injury but that could mean an opportunity for Ross Stewart and/or Oli McBurnie who have both been in decent form recently. Findlay Curtis, the youngster on loan from Rangers to Kilmarnock who was in the last squad, has also been in good form and would be a good attacking option.

Goalkeeper remains a problem position with veteran Hearts keeper Craig Gordon sadly lacking in game time although some would say he`s the most reliable option we have.

Surely Hanley will go if fit?

I`d forgotten about Bowie. Verona have been relegated but he scored a late equaliser at Inter at the weekend to put a dampener on their Scudeto-winning celebrations.

I don`t think I`ve ever seen Alan Irving play since he was a member of Hearts Championship-winning squad.

i`m hoping Ross Stewart gets picked - he`s looked very good for Southampton recently and carries an actual goal threat.

Goalkeepers

CRAIG GORDON
ANGUS GUNN
LIAM KELLY

Defenders

GRANT HANLEY
JACK HENDRY
AARON HICKEY
DOM HYAM
SCOTT MCKENNA
NATHAN PATTERSON
ANTHONY RALSTON
ANDY ROBERTSON
JOHN SOUTTAR
KIERAN TIERNEY

Midfielders

RYAN CHRISTIE
FINDLAY CURTIS
LEWIS FERGUSON
BEN GANNON-DOAK
BILLY GILMOUR
JOHN MCGINN
KENNY MCLEAN
SCOTT MCTOMINAY

Forwards

CHE ADAMS
LYNDON DYKES

ROSS STEWART

No big surprises other than maybe Stewart.

Curtis is still very young so I think Calvin Miller and maybe another winger should have been tested in the friendlies. If Gannon Doak doesn`t play we`re struggling.

Just messaged my Wrexham supporting brother in law, about Dom Hyam, as I`d never heard of him before. He was saying that he`s been absolutely phenomenal for them, which is very encouraging to hear as its definitely been a problem position for us.

No Lennon Miller is astonishing. Why we need 3 right backs. Ralston out and Miller in, and I would have been ok with this. Ralston is 3rd choice at celtic never mind scotland.

Problem is Hickey and Patterson are both injury prone, so Ralston is there as cover for them. Feels like a waste a spot, I`m sure if Hickey and Patterson were ruled out someone could step in at RB - Lewis Ferguson, or even Tierney?

McBurnie will feel aggrieved at not making the squad. Has taken stick in the past but no player in the squad has scored more than him this season I don’t think

"McBurnie will feel aggrieved at not making the squad. Has taken stick in the past but no player in the squad has scored more than him this season I don’t think"

think his previous involvements and attitude/comments around being involved previously have burn his bridges

I saw Hyam play against the Ivory Coast and was impressed. Him and Souttar looked comfortable together

McBurnie has had a great season but is a bit of a bampot. If you’re hoping to be in the competition for a few weeks you need people who won’t be distracted.

I think McBurnie has burnt his bridges with Clarke so fair enough. 3 right backs is a waste especially when Tierney can cover. Miller and Bowie should be experienced squad members by now and going, but never happening under Brown. Sorry, Clarke.

Not really. He`s only started 8 games all season, and it`s our strongest area of the park. No surprise he didn`t make it.

He gets game time every week, and normally a decent amount. The playing conditions are going to be brutal and our midfield will bear the brunt. We need more options in there than we do at right back

I see Dominic Hyam was born at Leuchars while his dad was stationed there with the RAF but he also has a Scottish granny on one side of the family and a Scottish grandad on the other.

It is the same old stuff, however there aren`t that many players banging the door down for inclusion.

McBurnie has done ok, but is a total bam.

Stewart is in form and included, as is Findlay Curtis (although I don`t he`ll get game time).

The only squad member who I wouldn`t have taken is probably Ralston.

Hanley isn`t great - but he was superb against Denmark. Kinda like our Harry Maguire - but mince for club, but great for country.

11 new players since Euro 24. How many changes are people expecting?

13 players remain from Euro2020/1. In that respect i think we have a good balance of experience and transition to new talent.

Lochgelly boy Liam Mcfarlane goalkeeper, called into squad, as one of the juniors!

Punted him a few times on this forum for a loan deal from Hearts.

Absolutely fantastic for the lad. Well done to him. Hope he rips the current Scottish defenders a new one in training and gets a ticket on the plane! H

That`s great news. Some folk don`t think he`s good enough to play for us too 😂

I was a bit surprised JCM wasn`t included in those youngsters training with the full team.

How long before they realise Andrew`s knackered after 15 minutes, hides for the rest of the game, couldn`t tackle a fish supper and isn`t a natural goalscorer?
