I appreciate he`s done well to get us to the WC but I would have preferred to wait to see how we are set up and perform before committing to another 4 years.

Our performances at previous Euro`s was abysmal and at the time there was widespread disappointment and calls for a change.

Fingers crossed he`s also gained from past experiences and gives it a right go this time.

The SFA really is just a cozy little club for the boys. Nobody is coming in for him, so what if he craps the bed yet again. Is this really the guy to transition the squad for the next Euros.

Difficult not to offer him an extension as he has been one of the most successful Scotland managers we’ve had - qualifying for major tourneys we shouldn’t take for granted although agree performance at Euros is shoddy.

I was a little disappointed with the squad he announced, sticking with players he knows than some that are on form but will see how it pans out.

Our performances against England, Switzerland and Croatia were alright but I agree we needed to be bolder v Czech Republic (although don`t underestimate weird covid empty stadium effect) and Hungary in particular.

Although for me it`s very much a "careful what you wish for" situation with wanting rid of Clarke. The wilderness years were *very* long.

Really appreciate what he’s done but we’ve been lucky to qualify for tournaments under him. Performances at tournaments have been an embarrassment. I think there are managers out there that could maybe do better with Scotlands current pool of players.

Has done very well in qualifiers with a pretty poor record in friendlies. Think there is a very large transition after this world cup where many regular faces are wrong side of 30 and probably not around by time 2030 comes.

Saying we`ve been lucky to qualify is a massive disservice. Remember where we were when he took over to now.

The Serbia playoff we dominated, lost a stupid late goal, but then won on penalties.

We beat Spain and finished ahead of a very good Norway team with 2 games to spare for Euro 2024.

To get to the World Cup, we finished above Denmark and Greece who had both comfortably beat us in recent history.

He does have a few blots on his scorecard (Czech at Euro 2020, Ukraine WC playoff, Hungary at Euro 2024) but he`s more than done enough to merit the contract.

A deal to 2028 would have been fair, with the option to extend if we made the euros.

It could well be that, look at Shanklands deal that was never made public.

Well if that’s the case then I get why they said to 2030 because it’s probably about a 0.01% we don’t make the euros since we are hosting them

Can’t say I’m thrilled but on the flip side the longer deal is potentially a good thing, instead of dragging the last out of a diminishing squad (which he might have with a 2 year deal) this gives him the freedom for a proper rebuild which is needed

Can’t say I’m excited at the prospect of him hanging around. He’s got a good qualifying record, but he’s still too reliant on some players who don’t really perform, and we were rank at the last Euros.

I’m not against giving Steve Clark a contract extension because he’s obviously been successful with the national team however, we’ve been poor at tournaments and we’re about to enter a tournament. We should have waited to see what happens at the World Cup IMO.

If we have a decent World Cup, I don’t think there could be much arguing with the contract extension but if we stink the place out/get put out too early/lose or draw with Haiti… it’s going to look a terrible decision

Don`t mind him getting a new contract, it`ll stop it being talked about during the world cup,.....but 4 years!

SFA are inviting criticism on themselves. If we get beat in another friendly at the weekend, then have a poor world cup, fans will be livid. Hopefully neither happens of course.

As I said, who would you have in the squad ahead of them?

Dykes and Adams are there to occupy defenders and create space for the better players in behind them. It`s not glamorous but they put in a shift.

Shankland has his place in this squad, but hasn`t really performed for Scotland when starting. He`s been very effective as a late sub when needing a goal against tired legs.

Hanley, of course a lot of criticism is merited, however we`ve hardly got a host of centre halves waiting in the wings to take his place.

The timing of this is ludicrous. Gets an extension immediately before the tournament at which his performance should be judged. The SFA know SFA!

The lack of a succession plan is glaringly obvious. He’s not been too keen to blood many younger squad members and relies on the same old same old. I don’t see anything changing from how we performed in the Euros. If we have to rely on a lone striker holding onto the ball then that speaks volumes on his approach to the WC.

Surely that`s an argument to give him 4 years rather than 2 then?

2 years, and in your arguement we`re at the Craig Brown era of having no succession. 4 years, Clarke has no choice but to blood the next generation.

Is it not weirdly a bit common for extensions to happen just before a major tournament, did it not happen to Tuchel there as well?

Tuchel was a two year extension to take him just beyond Euro 2028. Seems a sensible contract length I`d say as they`ll just extend it again before euro 2028.

The question is

1. who could we get in that is better without having to pay them out of a contract

2. How far do we need to get in this competition for every to agree he deserves it

Out the group? Last 16? Last 8? Any further and then your just never going to be a Steve Clark fan and I get his style of play isn’t the best but perfect example right now look at West Ham they were doing great under David moyes then he got chased out the club just for them to go right back to where they were before him

Would you take not qualifying for tournaments if it meant you got your pick in manager because I sure as hell wouldn’t

Denmark game aside, the football was utterly woeful during the qualifiers, yet somehow we`ve made it through.

Coming off the back of a poor Euros, it`s easy to see why people call for his head despite qualification success.

Don`t love or hate him but it`s absolutely imperative he starts to blood new players in the squad after the WC - McGinn & McTominay won`t be there for much longer & there`s every chance we`ll be back in the wilderness after the next Euros.

I`ll take qualification any day of the week but it would be nice to do it with a few more performances like v Spain & definitely Denmark.

As well as showing up in the tournaments themselves.

COME ON YE PARS!

You have to remember that we were utterly gash for most of the Denmark game too. Only when he went more attacking did it show how bad Denmark were. It was so frustrating as the previous home game against them , we blew them out the water. That is Clarke in a nutshell really.

I think there are 2 positives to him, he seems to cope well with the banana skins that used to trip us up, and he doesnt talk down the quality in the squad. I think Levein and Strachan did untold damage doing that

I really hope you don’t mean our 2-0 win against them because that was a completely different scenario they’d won 9/9 games already qualified

Do you look at anything objectively, or just take offence at everything? 🤔

SusieQ was right - we were really poor in qualifying. Especially the home tie with Belarus, as shown by the players reaction when we got the second. We did get lucky in that Belarus held Denmark to a miracle draw in Copenhagen after we lost to Greece - had the Danes won we were in play offs at best.

He has done great to get us to 3 major tournaments, but in the 2 he’s had so far we have been very poor. Will give him a break if we actually so well this summer.

There’s nothing better when to prove your point Dave that you actually completely destroy your point yes we probably didn’t play the best against Belarus but at the win of the day we won the game I couldn’t care if we played terrible every single game if it meant we won every game because I don’t think Denmark played bad against Belarus but they didn’t win and in the end that cost them going to the World Cup at all

On the subject of new talent coming through, I `ve just seen a clip of an interview with SC in which he seems confident there are young players good enough to progress to the full squad and he suggests he`s the person best-placed to recognise and achieve that and that`s one of the reasons he agreed to extending his contract.
