 World Cup rule changes

Saw the other week proposed changes to rules for next seasons and just reading on bbc implemented for World Cup BBC World Cup

Trying to stop the goalkeeper ‘tactical’ injury timeouts also some other changes on what bar can look at like fouls by attacker before a corner is taken (why not look at defenders pulling shirts ??)

also a few Interesting to see how they work on time wasting and may get red card for covering mouth - maybe shows the type of abuse refs have been taking or hearing and no video evidence

‘Law changes for the World Cup

This summer`s World Cup will see a high number of law changes, primarily around eradicating tactics to slow the tempo of play and waste time.

Collina hopes these changes will mean stoppage time is not as long as at the 2022 World Cup. But there is guaranteed to be three minutes in each half for the hydration breaks.

Throw-in countdown (five seconds): If a player deliberately delays the restart of play, the throw can be given to the opposition.

Goal-kick countdown (five seconds): Also applies to deliberate attempts to run down the clock and can result in a corner being awarded.

Time-limited substitutions (10 seconds): Substituted players have 10 seconds to leave the field at the nearest point. If they fail to do so, the substitute cannot enter the field for at least one minute and the team must continue with 10 players.

Off-field treatment (one minute): Players who are treated by the physio must stay off the field for 60 seconds. There are some exceptions, including for goalkeepers, injuries and if the opponent is booked or sent off.

Players covering their mouths: Any player covering their mouth in a confrontational situation with an opponent may be sanctioned with a red card.

As well as Collina`s request for the change to the protocol on corners, there are also a couple of other tweaks to VAR.

Corners can be checked: If VAR can make sure that a corner has been correctly awarded, but this must be done quickly and before the restart. Does not apply to wrongly awarded goal-kicks.

Second yellows can be reviewed: Players sent off for two cautions can have the second booking checked - but there will be no reviews for potential second yellows.

The only rule change I can come up with that has actually changed the game in a good way in the last 40 years is the increase in substitutions.

Even being onside when in line had unintended consequences.

For me, the 1992 rule change stopping the keeper from picking up a passback was a huge improvement. It kept the game flowing by stopping the keeper bouncing it around the penalty box before passing it back and forwards with the fullbacks. It also created more jeopardy for defences, so more goalmouth incidents and goals.

There have been borderline decisions about whether it has been a genuine passback attempt or not, but IMO these are outweighed by the benefits. The new 8 second rule for the keeper releasing the ball is beneficial for the same reasons.

It unspecialised the goalkeeping position and they had become footballers, it was awful. And it was Schmeichel`s fault, no one took the slash too many times passing back, but he did it in that Germany game in 1992.

Any goal coming from a goalkeeping error is ultimately unfulfilling, about one rung up from an own goal (Vanoli aside). I want defences in jeopardy from skilful attacking play not their own dodgy goalie....I speak from lived experience as a Pars fan who lived the 2025/26 season.

You seem to be a cheerleader for "fast football". Artificially trying to control the natural ebb and flow of a played since medieval times and beyond turns it from an artform to a commodity.

The ban on deliberate pass backs to the goalkeeper by foot only was one the best change in the laws that I can recall - arguably the best in fact.

Mind the days when defenders knocked it back to the goalkeeper who picked it up then released it to another teammate who would repeat the process and so.

I don`t think an attempt to revert to the previous rule would gain much, if any, support.

The proposed corner rule there is mental. So you could be penalised for a foul before the ball is in play, but only if you’re attacking? That would only make it worse. The scourge of corners these days is defenders being more interested in wrestling their opponents than looking at the ball. I can’t say forwards blocking the run of a defender has really entered my consciousness as a constant issue in anywhere near the same way, so that’s a bizarrely specific thing to focus on.

Indeed, it’s overdue for FIFA to look at penalty area antics at corners. Maybe limit the number of players in penalty area ?

What does this mean? What other possible reason is there for a physio to treat a player apart from an injury?

Lot of good changes here. Latin nations are going to be panicking over the change to covering their mouths

I see players of all nationalities covering their mouths?

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I don’t even think it needs a limit on players in the box. It just needs refs clamping down on it for a short period. Give ten penalties in one match if need be - defenders will soon get the message and stop grappling rather than trying to play the ball.

The biggest issue with it is that everyone’s holding on to each other I get it if the defender is the only one doing it or vice versa but it’s a case of the defender and attacker just holding on to each other and if they are both doing it then how can you penalise one over the other it just needs an out right ban of you can’t hold on or you get booked don’t car if there’s 30 bookings in a game just get it stamped out and actually have a contested header instead of grabbing

Both sets of players are at it, not just defenders, as said above.

Holding, shirt pulling, ‘simulation’ i.e. cheating, and, above all, assaulting an opponent should all be met with a booking at least.

If they had a committee that met on Mondays to retrospectively hand out two match bans for diving it would wipe it out within a month.

I don’t like that the VAR for corner but doesn’t apply to goal-kicks. Surely if they can check one they can check the other in the same period of time. Also with the ball being charged up and sensors fully operational then it will become easier for VAR no?
I’m wondering if the ball is actually going to bring something to the benefit of games other than more data for broadcasting
