Yep, a loan. Not sure anyone did that well at Airdrie but clearly well thought of at Dundee to have that length of contract. I`d hate to see another Barney situation but it`s not that different to someone like JCM seeing out his contract and moving on.

he never played for Airdrie, he was listed as a player on the co-operation agreement between the clubs but Goodwin wanted to keep him around their first team.
the club has to look at every option possible including loans, with so few options in that position up here its not a surprise to be linked with the lad.

If he has signed a 3 year deal they clearly see something in him, otherwise why waste your time. I am sure we will have to live with a couple of selected loan options thos season, whilst bringing on our own talent. Its a reality for a club like ours. Also it helps bring on younger players in the squad and creates competition.

He didn’t play at Airdrie, he’s 20 and played several times for Scotland Under 21’s. He’s had a handful of games in the Premier and played 15 times for Kelty as an 18 year old.
I’m not sure if folk were hoping for Guardiol on a free but his profile is comparable with JCM, he’d be a benefit to the team for sure. Quite possibly we’re saving any fee for a permanent keeper.

JCM wasn`t an experienced defender when we signed him. Where`s the logic in having to replace him with an experienced defender?
As regards rthe lack of news re signings, I would have thought if you`re trying to sign quality players then it`s inevitable they rake longer than signing journeymen.

There were a few games last season where we lost early goals and struggled to recover or lost the game. Anyone in the age group of 25+ with a bit of a pedigree I would personally call experienced. It ultimately depends on our aims this season. You need a good mix of youth and experience in the championship. Having said that, I am not sure where these players woukd come from. The lower English leagues probably pay more money, and they would probably see they had more options down south. Its a challenge with limited funds to build a championship winning side.

Early last month you were asking when Pre-season training started because you felt NL would want new players in before then.
The cup final was on the 23rd May it was made public then that JCM ( and Ngwenya) were off. The still in negotiations bit from the club was just lip service to the fans to suggest they had tried (I don`t doubt they had but by that stage they would have known their intention to leave). A GK and at least one CB should have been high up the list to the effect that 6 weeks later those boxes should have been ticked.

SCH is a very good player and should fit into the team really well. Obviously at his age it’s a learning experience too which suits all parties, we are clearly short on defensive cover.

I guess we have to assume that the club are considering taking this guy on loan (if it even happens) because they rate him to be at the required level to perform right away, either as a starter or back up. Not really any point in us acting as a development club for DU except for real short-term benefit to us.
He`s on a long term deal at DU and they apparently rate him so it`s not like we`re bringing in someone running down a contract and we`re hoping to bring him in permanently after a year on loan auditioning how good it is here.
So, if NL thinks he`s good enough for the team then I`m not bothered if he`s a loan or permanent (except if he gets recalled like Ox at a critical time).

For Wee Ecks sake...
True, we don`t necessarily need experience, we need `good enough`.
If Lenny thinks this young lad is good enough to get us out this league then fair play.
I for one am sceptical. The 19, 20, 21 yr olds who are good enough, we can`t get for various reasons, unless clubs are getting them off the wage bill.
A Loan deal for a 20yr old in an important position is taking a big chance..that`s all I`m saying.

I know we all have different opinions but some of the posts on here defy belief. Every transfer window someone will suggest that signing quality players is easy for a club of our status and, if we haven`t done so before pre-season starts, we haven`t been trying hard enough. It totally ignores the fact that we have no control over the availability of players, their demands and those of their clubs, if applicable, and have a budget and wage structure we have to comply with to keep the club financially stable. I know it`s frustrating but why would it be any different?
And how about this one -
`True….but other teams make signings quickly ( presumably journeymen ) and still finish above us in the league…..`
Aren`t we trying to change that by improving the quality?

Yeah, I posted that 3 weeks ago but what you want and what you get are two different things. That`s what folk seem to find hard to understand. Say NL decided after the Cup Final that he`d like to sign Oxborough. How many hurdles would there be in the way of achieving that before pre-season training started? At what point do you decide it`s not going to happen so move on to another target?

Yes we all do have different opinions. I am sure we are trying to improve the quality, I don’t doubt that. Point I was making is true and valid ( tongue in cheek I am sure you knew that…mmm ? Partick and Arbroath being the prime examples.
Hopefully the signings we do make hit the ground running as we desperately need to get out of the championship.
Up front we have players who have championship experience… I would not like to describe them as journeymen tbh but let’s call them experienced at this level. In midfield we have very little at this level and at the back and between the sticks the same. I would love to see some exciting signings but it does not always work out…Caceres being a good example. But I certainly would not be disappointed if we do sign another midfielder CH or keeper who have a few seasons under their belt at this level.
What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Remember we signed Mcloed from United last season and he wasnt ready for championship football so ended with with a year mostly on the bench, he’s have been better on loan.
It’s simple really if we want to compete nearer the top of the league we need consistent experienced quality instead of relying on inconsistent relatively raw youngsters in key positions who struggle physically in this league.
If it’s about making the playoffs again then it’s fine to bring some raw young loans in as we’re probably not far away from that level already.
We were something like 25 points off st Johnstone last season 15 off Partick.

Unfortunately I think Macleod probably spent more time injured than on the bench last season. I think he spent a season on loan at Southampton when he was at Dundee United so I doubt we had any intentions of putting him out on loan.
Maybe we should wait until this window`s signings are complete before passing judgement.

Aye so we shouldn’t have signed Mullen, Ngenwa or Robbie Fraser - can’t class any of them as experienced. At least you’ll be happy with Oli Shaw.
Also can’t really use the gaps to St Johnstone or Partick over the whole of last season as a guide. Most of that gap was from the first half of the season.
The players we do have are all a year older, and we do need additional players to strengthen but main thing we need is quality. Dundee Utd defender is highly rated so if he does sign then just give the lad a chance.

Andy Tod wasn`t experienced at this level either, and he ended up being our top goalscorer.
Back onto transfer business. Let`s set expectations a little here. The Scottish Championship isn`t a huge draw compared to other leagues, so free agents are naturally going to wait things out to see if they can get more money elsewhere. We were never going to be able to do all our business early.
If we want quality and experience, those signings will probably happen closer to the end of the window, as players will want to secure the best deal for their future before it closes. There`s still plenty of time, and looking at the other signings around the league, it`s fair to say we`ve not missed out on anything of real value.
This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

Dunfermline Athletic are delighted to confirm the season-long loan signing of Sam Cleall-Harding from Dundee United. The highly-rated defender has progressed through the ranks at Tannadice, gaining valuable first-team experience during the 2024/25 campaign, playing a key role in the club’s push for European football.
The Dundee-born centre-back featured in important victories over Heart of Midlothian and St Johnstone, while also scoring his first senior goal against Rangers. He helped Dundee United secure qualification for European competition and continued his development as part of the club’s domestic and European campaigns.
With 10 senior appearances for United to his name, Sam signed a new deal in February to keep him at Tannadice until summer 2029. He also enjoyed loan experience with Kelty Hearts. At international level, Cleall-Harding has represented Scotland at Under-21 level and scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in Baku during UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying.
The defender has already accumulated more than 2,500 minutes of senior football across spells with Dundee United and Kelty Hearts, featuring in Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and European competition squads.
Everyone at Dunfermline Athletic welcomes Sam to KDM Group East End Park and wishes him every success during his time with the club.

Astute piece of business if that`s the case.
I agree, some people estimated that the development fee would be in the region of £75,000 so even if they had managed to negotiate a 10% sell on fee, I think that`s a gamble worth taking. He could get injured, or not do very well and get released at the end of his deal, but he could do well, really kick on down there and move on for £1,000,000 or more next summer like Malachi Fagan-Walcott did

If this is in the contract then it`s potentially a win-win:
Wigan save on expenditure (the club currently owes about £6m to its owner) and won`t pay DAFC anything at all unless they get a big fee for selling JCM - and a slight increase in that fee would cover it.
Meanwhile, DAFC get nothing, but with a gambler`s chance of getting significantly more in a year or so if JCM is successful and attracts a big bid. Given his international recognition and undoubtedly potential, that sounds like something that would appeal to our owner!
