USA striker, trying to hold up the ball, stumbles and steps on Bosnian defender’s ankle with no knowledge of doing that. Ref shows no card. After being called to monitor, ref shows red card. There’s clearly no intent or reckless play. It shouldn’t even be a yellow. But in WC, there’s no appeal of red cards. USA loses best striker for next round.
It seemed like VAR was intervening less in the WC and that was good — until tonight.
