 USA v Bosnia
Topic Originator: USMac

USA striker, trying to hold up the ball, stumbles and steps on Bosnian defender’s ankle with no knowledge of doing that. Ref shows no card. After being called to monitor, ref shows red card. There’s clearly no intent or reckless play. It shouldn’t even be a yellow. But in WC, there’s no appeal of red cards. USA loses best striker for next round.

It seemed like VAR was intervening less in the WC and that was good — until tonight.

Question is - why was Messi not given a red for a near identical challenge, but Balogun was?

He is unfortunate, but it’s a red card, when you watch it again he’s lucky the Bosnians ankle hasn’t snapped.

Messi has been protected for ages. Should have been redded Vs the Netherlands in last WC as well.

The var consistency in this WC is very poor.

Not sure why they even bother going to the extent of publishing things like "ref review" and various "VAR review" shows when they explain LOTG and why certain things are punished.

contact high above the boot that causes a "buckling" of the ankle will lead to a red card

It was a complete accident , no way was he attemting to injure the player, not even a yellow .

If a yellow requires reckless (some intent), then a red must require at least that intent if not more. So if you accidentally step in someone’s ankle, it’s not a card at all.

Breaking news -

Folarin Balogun is available to play for the United States in their World Cup last-16 tie against Belgium after his one-game ban was suspended by Fifa.

The 25-year-old striker was shown a straight red card for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic as the co-hosts won their last-16 tie 2-0.

Fifa said that the ban will be suspended for a year.

"In line with article 27 of the Fifa disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year," it said in a statement.

"If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement."

More to follow.

Wild. What a mad precedent to set. Although to be fair they were already on that path when they decided Ronaldo’s red didn’t matter.

Whether it’s a red or not, the fact they’re just waving it off and letting him play without even overturning it is hilarious.

This is almost as barmy as the FIFA peace prize.

There is no logic in this decision.

I hope Belgium play better than they have so far and absolutely stuff them.

They’ve just completely shot themself in the foot with this one - means any red card from now on isn’t sanctionable……horrible precedent to set and will easily be legally challenged now by the FAs.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Poch has worked hard to create a culture where no one player is above the rest in a really positive team-first culture. I’m curious how he will address this development.

Poch says card was unfair in the first place and USA already suffered against Bosnia. He’s got a point, but so do the Belgians.

Poch doesn`t have a point at all. The card was harsh, but completely fair within the context of the laws. The Belgians on the other hand do have a point.

The biggest irony is that Trump is desperately trying to remove birthright citizenship from the US Constitution, which would remove Balogun`s eligibility to play for the US. Not that trump has the brains to spot the irony.

^^^ The irony is even worse as almost the entire US team would be ineligible.

Then there is the question about his own birth right..

Trump talks as much crap about football as he does about everything else -

"All I did was I asked for a review because I didn`t think it was a foul. Again, I`m good at this stuff. I didn`t think it was a foul. I thought it was two great athletes who crashed into each other and got entangled. That was not a guy punching somebody in the face or anything that would be different.

"If they wouldn`t allow a top player, maybe among the best players on the team, to play, I think it would have had a big stain and I related just that feeling. I didn`t tell them what to do. I can`t tell them what to do. I don`t believe he [Infantino] made the decision, I think it was a committee that made the decision, and they made the right decision because number one it wasn`t a foul, and you want to see a game with your best players. How would you feel if you took [Lionel] Messi, or [Cristiano] Ronaldo or Harry Kane out? You can`t do that. We gotta have our best players and Belgium`s got a great team by the way. We gotta have our best and they gotta have their best. And if we win or we lose, it`s fair."

Balogun probably had to be red carded because of the way that the laws are applied but given that it looked a complete accident, I think that a red card with no suspension (not even a suspended one) would a reasonable outcome for anyone that this happens to.

However, you have to have that policy agreed and made official prior to a tournament rather than just make it up midway through so that the USA have a better chance of progressing.

Trump seems to be suggesting certain players should be exempt from being suspended! He also said that, at the time Balogun`s card was given, he didn`t understand the implications for the next match. He`ll be asking them to revise the Laws of the Game next.

I didn`t realise that Balogun is another product of English academies. It`s extraordinary the amount of top players playing for other countries that the English have produced. Balogun, Olise, McTominay, Musiala are just some off the top of my head but I know there is much more. Would imagine only the French or Dutch come close to equaling them.

I heard on Talksport that the US government provided additional information or proof that it wasn`t a foul!!!!! What could they possibly have that the thousand VAR cameras didn`t show? What a joke 😃.

Trump is also handing over the trophy to the eventual winners, let`s hope he doesn`t hog the limelight like at the Club World Cup because that was just cringe of the tallest order.

Sorry, there’s no basis to give a red card for an accident. If the laws don’t warrant a red card in that instance, then it was not merely harsh.

Indeed, I thought that it was an inside job when the card was given after review.
So I do see where Poch is coming from. He is Argentinian after all.

FIFA really are without shame;

RBFA STATEMENT UPDATE

Following its previous statement, the RBFA wishes to publicly explain the events of the past few hours.

After learning through media reports of FIFA’s decision to lift the automatic suspension of player Balogun, the RBFA sent a letter to FIFA requesting a copy of the decision, an explanation of the process that had been followed, and setting out its position regarding the applicable regulations.

As its only response, FIFA sent a letter to the RBFA stating that it considered this correspondence to constitute an appeal, that a judge had been appointed, and that the RBFA had only a few hours to complete that appeal. No information whatsoever was provided by FIFA.

For an appeal to be admissible, FIFA’s own regulations state that the reasoned decision must first have been communicated to the appellant. While the RBFA was merely seeking legitimate explanations, FIFA itself created an appeal and immediately ensured that it would be declared inadmissible.

All of this occurred while FIFA simultaneously refused to respond to the RBFA’s legitimate requests.

Furthermore, during the match coordination meeting, FIFA deliberately removed the section concerning the automatic suspension of players from its presentation. This topic had nonetheless been part of all such meetings before each of the previous four matches. The RBFA questioned FIFA, both orally and in writing, about the reasons for this change, yet once again received no response.

To be clear, as of this moment, the RBFA has still not received any decision or any explanation from FIFA regarding this matter. It therefore has no alternative but to challenge the player`s eligibility for the upcoming match.

Regardless of the sporting outcome of this match, the RBFA is deeply concerned by the course of events and will continue to fight in the coming hours, days and months in defence of the fundamental principles of ethics, fair competition, and the interests of football as a whole.

It’s an absolute disgrace, a mess and Infantino is just as corrupt as Blatter.

Don’t think anyone believes a word he says that he had nothing to do with it.

England will have full grounds to get Quansahs red overturned now too, or their spiel about sporting integrity and everyone getting a level playing field will just be words.

I thought the same as you. International teams after this tournament must stand up to FIFA. UEFA were reported on the radio that their statement included the words that FIFA has crossed a line. Not sure where that leads us, but they are correct. Sporting integrity my Jim Royle.

USmac, wherever it was a red or not is now irrelevant though FIFA seems to believe it was a red hence that it has not been recinded. The problem is the president of the United States applied pressure to the governing body of a sport to have the rules changed to benefit his nation. Imagine a sporting event held in China and the supreme leader did the same, the outroar from the Americans would be deafening. We`ve entered banana republic territory now for the U.S.

No other politician would have had the ignorance of the etiquette of football to call FIFA and attempt to change the rules mid-tournament...then again everyone else would have been told "no!".

It seems to have set a precedent in that other teams are now appealing unfair red cards as it should be, but not mid-tournament at the behest of a politician.

Infantino should have said to Trump we will introduce an appeals process at the next world cup and placated his ego by saying we`ll call it a "Trump appeal".

Infantino is clearly at least as shady, potentially more, than Blatter ever was.

I suppose Trump had the ultimate card to play, in possibly threatening pulling the plug on the remainder of the tournament? Would be his style to do that.
