Late in ET, Belgium crosses the ball and Tielmans is fouled going for the ball. But no whistle and the ball goes through into the middle of the box, Belgium keeps control and has an open shot that misses narrowly. VAR calls ref to monitor, and he awards Belgium spot kick for foul.
If ref had played advantage notwithstanding the foul, he wouldn’t have awarded the spot kick after Belgium missed its open shot. So why should he award the spot kick after VAR? They are not entitled to get 2 chances to score. Am I wrong?

I think the overall standard of refereeing in the WC has been good but the subjectivity of certain decisions can`t be removed, even with the use of VAR. In particular there have been a number of challenges in the penalty area where there has been a lack of consistency in deciding what constitues a foul and no attempt to clarify these decisions after the match. The point about advantage having been played in this particular incident just added to the lack of clarity.

It gets pulled back because missing a penalty is an error by the ref, where Belgium have then had to work for an advantage rather than having an unopposed (keeper excluding) attempt on goal.
The ref has missed the original foul, so is rightly brought to the monitor to check - thats the point in VAR.
Ive never understood refs who allow advantage if a foul is committed in the box either - just give the pen.

I get all the technicalities but someone, either the onfield ref or the Video Assistant Ref, has to decide if it was a penalty. Why was last night`s given but the Moroccan challenge on McGinn (or McTominay) not given? McGinn`s brother said he told him the ref said he didn`t give it because he thought the ball was going out of play. Since when did that matter?

If that`s a penalty, which it wasn`t, why did Scotland not
get 2 penalties against Morocco, which were more
evident than the stupid one that Belgium got.
