A conflict of interest with the Pars match kicking off 15 mins before this oneβ¦. What to do?!
*MultitaskingAwNight*
Easy, go to the Pars game with your mobile phone and watch the Spain game on your mobile while freezing at EEP. Cos no matter the weather it is invariably cold at EEP.
When you hear murmurs of discontent hide your eyes.
When you hear a cheer look up from your phone.

Thank goodness for technology, will go to the game , half time can watch the WC on phone. If the Pars game is dreadful will probably watch with one eye, and the other the WC game.
I`m pretty sure will be an extremely low crowd, not much we can do about that.

Sometimes, even the best teams don`t turn up.
Considering the attacking talent at their disposal, the French were a big disappointment. Quite soundly beaten in the end.
I wonder if the favourites for tonight`s semi-final will suffer a similar fate. π€

I`m still in shock at how impotent the French forwards were..I fully expected them to steamroll their way to the trophy. I was playing golf on my phone while watching (qualified for The Open π ) so I don`t really know if the Spanish defenders done their job or if the French forwards had an off night.
Ps I was also listening to an audiobook so didn`t hear the commentary.

French defending was always their weak point. Digne`s play when giving away the penalty was so amateurish, you could see what was going to happen the moment the ball bounced. If England get past Argentina that will be the world cup and euro finals contested by the same two nations. Also the same two nations that fought out the euro u21`s final and the last world cup and euro women`s finals. Without a doubt England and Spain are the dominating powerhouses of world football at all levels.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I thought the penalty award was very harsh, TOWK. Referees have less and less discretion available to them when making a decision. There was a time when a ref would have deemed the contact from Digne to be purely accidental, which I believe it was. Nowadays, the interpretation of intent has been removed in an effort to make the ref`s job easier, but in reality it can lead to decisions like last night`s.
Technically, it is a penalty under current guidance, but in the past, it wouldn`t have been awarded.

I think you`re being very generous to Digne. Other than the fact I thought it could have been a handball by Lamal it was a stonewaller for me. He`s swing his foot to kick the ball but the ball isn`t there because the Spaniard has got there first and so he ends up getting kicked.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I agree, GGR. There are many instances now where defenders are penalised for challenges which were not premeditated or where they could not be reasonlaby expected to anticipate the sudden appearance of an opponent.

Could not reasonably anticipate the sudden appearance of an opponent? `He was too fast for me ref!` isn`t a defence for fouling an opponent.
I`ll go an watch it again, maybe I`ve missed something here.
Watched it again, clear cut penalty. Can`t kick someone in the hip after they have knocked the ball past you.

When you watched it again, did you not see that Lamal was throwing himself into Digne before he was kicked? And lest you think, I`m a France fan, I wanted Spain to win. The French are almost as unbearable as the English when they win. They obviously thought they would see off Spain last night.

Sorry GG but I`m genuinely amazed that anyone can look at that and not see it`s a penalty. He kicks him in the hip after Lamal knocks the ball past him! Had the ball been lower and Lamal kicked it past him and then Digne swing his foot out and kicked him in the shin I`m sure you wouldn`t question it. Now had Digne went to head it and it was a shoulder to shoulder coming together I ould maybe get behind your defence but it wasn`t that.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Digne didnβt complain about the decision so he clearly thought it was a penalty.

I said that under current guidance, it`s a penalty, but it would have been adjudged as accidental in years gone by, and a penalty would not have been awarded. So it is a penalty, but I think it`s a tad harsh because I don`t think Digne saw Lamal, and his kick was an attempt to clear the ball.
I`m not claiming infallability, but I wouldn`t have given a penalty for that when I was a referee 40-50 years ago, but football was tougher then. Nowadays, some players fall over at the slightest touch. π

I also thought that it was clear AF, that the ball hit Yamal`s arm, before the contact. Couldn`t believe that it wasn`t looked at or even mentioned
