Well that`s him aff.

Hopefully can pick up a coaching role as I`m sure he will have a lot to pass on.

I mind one of his earliest appearances for the Jam Tarts when lower tier Falkirk took them apart in a cup tie at Brockville - he was blameless.

Could maybe see him going into management. Comes across as quite an intelligent guy.

Easily the best Scottish goalie of his generation should have had over a hundred caps. Never could understand how Alan Macgregor was picked before him although the fact he played for the blue half of the bigots might give a clue.

Can`t think of any off hand.

Oofft, I’m not sure I agree with your Alan McGregor comment. He was a top Goalkeeper in his own right, regardless of who he played for.

We were very fortunate to have 2 top Goalkeepers during that period, even more so when Gordon went 2-3 years with being injured or coming back from it.

I’ve been very fortunate to have seen Gordon, McGregor & Goram playing for the national side. I change who I think was the best every day, but there’s no doubt the 3 of them were top top Goalkeepers on their day.

There are a few goalies who went on to be decent managers, probably a couple of reasons behind there not being many, one would be numbers, there is 1 goalkeeper in the 11, so a lot less of them to begin with, but they have also had a lot of different experiences to the outfield players. In the coaching and training and tactics they have received, it has been more specialised for their unique position. On the pitch they may have been great at organising the defence in front of them and seen what needed to be done to nullify attacking threat but it`s a lot different to the experience midfielders will have picked up over the years, with their role involving both the attacking and defensive phases of the game. That might be why some of the best managers in the game have often been those midfield general types that were almost like their managers on field coach

Did Paul Smith go in goals when Westie was sent off/injuried one game?

He managed Berwick didn`t he?

But there`s a chance (a) that`s a bit tenuous and (b) given that the old Smiths were like the current Tod(d)s that I`ve got the wrong one!

He did indeed Ipswich. Always left one on the goalkeepers when in a strikers role. I think he was just a frustrated goalkeeper in real life.

Tbf theres 10 outfielder players and 1 goalkeeper. That alone is going to make the amount of goalkeepers going into management smaller than outfield players.

Wouldn’t a fairer comparison be to centre backs or strikers?

New Scotland manager should appoint him as goalkeeper coach.

Chris Woods has had a good run…

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Before Paul Smith went in goal v Berwick he went in goal for a penalty shoot out in a pre-season friendly that was for a tinpot trophy.

Westy was in goal first half then Jim Will came on at half time I think and injured his ankle but stayed on for the rest of the game but Smith took over for the shootout.

Paul Smith played in goals in a 1-0 defeat against Dundee in the early part of the 95/96. I think George Shaw scored from a cross/shot that sailed over his head. I`m guessing that it was van de Kamp who got injured.

Wasn`t it Paul Tosh that scored ? I remember that game . Guido did indeed pick up an injury .

You might well be right - I`m going purely off memory. I do remember Smith was at fault (if judging by the standards of a full-time keeper) but the goal might have been different to the one I have in mind.

Yes you are correct . It was a shot from outside the box that any full time keeper should save.
