 Goalie timeouts

Just reading on bbc :

‘English football will implement a trial to try to eradicate the goalkeeper tactical timeout this season.
The Football Association, Premier League, English Football League, National League and Women`s Super League have agreed on the measure, with permission granted by the International Football Association Board (Ifab).

Pro Ref, led by chief refereeing officer Howard Webb, had been in discussions with the leagues to determine how to tackle the issue. It settled on a team having to remove an outfield player from the pitch.

If a referee signals that the physio can come on to treat a goalkeeper, that team`s coach will have 10 seconds to nominate another player to leave the pitch for one minute after play has restarted, telling the fourth official of their choice.

If no player has been selected within 10 seconds, the captain must leave the field.

The first game to feature the trial will be the Carabao Cup preliminary round tie between Tranmere and Rochdale on Saturday.’

😳😳

So whilst playing is stopped to attend to an injured goalkeeper they same team must remove one more of their players to address "what balance"? 🤔🤔

It`s to try and stop Goalkeepers faking injuries to allow a manager to speak to their team and/or slow the game down.

Crept more and more in to the game last season. Coaches telling the keeper to go down.

Another needless trial. They are trying to make a round wheel square.

They’re trying to cut out the play acting by goalkeepers that coaches incite during games to reset teams and break up the opposing teams momentum. Goalkeeper is the only position that doesn’t need to leave the pitch when injured, coaches know this and take advantage. It happens all the time in the premier league, this rule will soon stamp it out.

So the goalie could feign injury for much longer than a minute (which the coach could use to speak to the team) but they`d only be penalised for a minute? Why not match the penalty with the length iof the stoppage?

You then run the risk of a team being pretty harshly penalised for a keeper being genuinely injured.

Not sure there`s an easy answer to any of this.... even getting the fourth official to make sure both benches shut their pusses when the game is stopped would be abused.

Just get the goalkeeper to ask if he can stop for a drink of water.

I would have thought the stoppage time is added on as normal, the 1 minute player down is an arbitrary amount unrelated to the length of time they are down

That`s what I was questioning, P. The offending team could take as long as they liked but their `punishment` (ie playing with a man short) would be limited to one minute. Why not just stop the players from congregating near the technical area when the physio comes on?

A passing thought - the injured goalkeeper to be temporarily replaced without delay by a substitute keeper until the former recovers and can resume.

These will not constitute a normal substitution.

Clubs have nobody to blame but themselves in this one. It was a clear tactic by managers last season to break up play and get tactical notes to the squad. The most blatant example was Nick Pope.

It now means keepers will only go down if genuinely injured, which should be the case anyway. If they aren’t, I can imagine their team mates will be screaming at them to get up.

Clubs cant complain about these new rules (like the new 5 second rules and 10 minutes added time each half) as it’s been brought on by ridiculous time wasting. The stat a couple of years ago of the ball being in play for an hour on average is disgraceful to paying fans.

What annoys me is when keepers catch the ball, take a few steps and then drop to the ground. Surely that’s blatant time wasting snd should be stamped out ?

This is a real problem that needs to be addressed. The number of goalies of teams losing or under severe pressure who suddenly felt a tight hamstring last season was getting comical.

However, this is not the answer. Over complicated solution that won’t really solve anything.

Its not that complicated. If a keeper goes down and gets treatment, a player leaves the park for a minute. It’s the exact same rule as if an outfield player goes down and gets treatment, they will now leave the field for a minute.

Why should keepers get “treatment” and not have the same rules apply to them as outfielders?

What if the goalkeeper requires treatment as the result of being fouled ?

Same for an outfield player similarly injured - the logic of obliging them to leave the field of play, even temporarily, is hard to make sense of.

My understanding is that if the injury occurs due to a foul and a yellow/red card is issued then the selected player won`t need to leave the pitch (which is the same as what currently happens if a outfield player is injured after a foul and the opponent is carded currently)

Have they not addressed this by the 5 second rule for keepers to release the ball?

I think sending folk for an HIA and brining on a sub in their place would cut a lot out. I don’t think it would be as easy to implement as it sounds tho because Rugby already had a lot more medical teams/physio’s in attendance plus there was a general consensus it was a good idea but I don’t see the same sentiment in football.

Its genuinely frightening that football is so far behind sports like rugby when it comes to HIAs. Especially with the recent knowledge of heading a ball and the damage it can do to players.
