 Franco Baresi (D)

The Italian legend passes away at the age of only 66.
Greatest defender ever? That would be some accolade but he`d certainly be in the conversation but what isn`t up for debate, judging by the tributes, is that he was one of life`s good guys.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Oh no.

The best ball playing centre back/sweeper that lived. A footballing god in my eyes. Genuinely gutted to hear this.

He played into his 40`s I`m sure.

RIP Franco a footballing legend when I was growing up.

I agree with all of the above. Franco Baresi belongs in the very highest pantheon of players to have played the game. I always admired his ability to stay in control of pressure, and his reading of a game was second to none. His passing is a sad day for everyone who loves football.

An absolutely peerless, unruffled defender who would walk into any team in any era.

My abiding memory of him was in the USA 94 WC. He was injured in the group stage and had keyhole surgery to trim cartilage in his knee. After only 3 weeks, he returned for the Final v Brazil and was unquestionably MotM. He played the whole goalless 2 hours, coming close to snatching it for Italy with a rasping shot that just cleared the bar.

He stepped up in typically courageous fashion to take Italy`s first penalty, but unfortunately, he put that narrowly over the bar, too, one of three Italians to fail from the spot, the others being Massaro and Roberto Baggio, of course.

R. I. P. Franco.

Not your average Sunday League player.
