Ian Murray is making dire warnings about the club not being able to fulfil fixtures if he can`t boost his squad numbers. After a promising start as manager following his appointment last season he seems to have lost the support of the Cappielow faithful.

Only had 13 players at training this week with some of them being academy teenagers. They’re humped.

They have had financial problems in the past. Its a challenge for many clubs with small fan bases to stay afloat no doubt.

I remember the crazy days of Hugh Scott being chairman.
Douglas Rae was much more sensible and poured in a lot of cash (even if it was only sweetie-money...) but after his sad demise, his family were less keen on squandering their inheritance.
There have been stories about expected sponsorship being promised but not materialising.
Many people say that Championship football in unsustainable - clubs like ourselves spending loads bids up the price for everyone else. they can`t all compete successfully and often run into trouble if they try.
I think Morton fans were anticipating a long hard season. Maybe they will be grateful to get to the end intact.

It’s sad teams in our league struggle so much.Compared to English clubs,it’s a disgrace how we are treated.T.v money is chicken feed, and parachute payments are non existent as far as I’m aware. No wonder we all struggle,to exist.Thank god we have a great board, and a very loyal support! Who would want to run a club in this league?

Are morton a full time team?. I don`t understand why they would consider forfeiting games because they are short of players and have no money. Sign a few amateurs.

Sounds like a private battle between the manager and chairman, with Murray using a press release to put pressure on the board.
Also a preemptive bit of defence by Murray, shifting any fan anger for their poor start from himself over to the board for not releasing funds

Feels like Murray has been rug pulled and is trying to protect his rep as the team plummets.

Seems he is trying to protect his reputation, but Dougie Imrie managed for years on a limited budget
Doesn`t help that Murray has used his budget to include a couple injury prone players (who subsequently are injured) and O`Halloran.
It never ends well going against the board in football, I think they are majority fan owned? If so, well that has limitations as we know.
There is a reason he is at Morton, fans never want to hear managers moaning about injuries, budgets etc. I don`t think this has gone down well.

He`s also brought in loads of midfield players when they are crying out for defensive players. Expect to see Iain Wilson at centre back again this season.

I think there`s a bit more to this one than just Murray having a go at the board. Their signings look low cost or loanees so there is maybe just no money, or at least none being spent.
My reading of it from memory is that the current owners are waiting for the new `Estrella` investment to come through. Even when it does they`d need to agree what to spend it on.
The £750k over three years they are putting in, for three seats on the board, sounds like peanuts too. MCT (fans group) have two so they won`t have any majority say. Looks a potential mess.

Morton always seem to be amongst the bookies’ favourites for relegation, yet often seem to finish fairly comfortably mid-table. This is their twelfth successive season in the second tier!

Thanks for that. Morton seem to struggle financially every season. I don`t understand why they don`t go part time. Arbroath seem to manage.

East Kilbride manager Mick Kennedy has offered to sponsor the shirts of players at fellow SPFL club Morton amid their lack of squad numbers. (Sun, external)
I presume they mean his business.

I would imagine that for any manager, going to a club with limited resources presents a challenge. It takes money to compete in Scottish football to invest in players that are really your primary asset. Reputation is everything so if you are managing a club, that due to financial constraints may be prime for relegation then its your reputation at stake as a manager. The wider issue remains for those who run Scottish football is how do you structure the leagues so that clubs can remain viable financially and football is entertaining so that people want to watch it. Once great clubs like Morton seem to be in managed decline, propped up by benefactors rather than being able to operate as thriving businesses.
I believe that in 2024/25 the Pars recorded the highest defecit of all championship clubs. Most championship clubs do not publish Profit and Loss accounts under the small business exemption at Companies House. The loss was attributed to January recruitment, transfer fee investment, and repeated management and football structure changes.
For championship clubs generally, a practical benchmark is on average, approximately £3.5m total annual operating expenditure with a £1.3m player-payroll allowance. A club exceeding £4m without exceptional commercial income, transfer profits or committed owner funding will normally operate at a significant deficit.
That seems to be the financial reality for many clubs.

If they have set up a fighting fund that`s doesn`t sound good. Hope they pull through.
