Underlying metrics say Celtic should have lost that game 7-8 times out of 10.
The goals were bangers, but they aren`t gonna score bangers like that every game. I wouldn`t get carried away on that performance.

As others have said, some top finishes from Duran and Nygren. LASK very easily could`ve scored 3 or 4 times, no idea how it stayed a clean sheet for Celtic. If they score early in the 2nd leg it`s game on, given how vulnerable Celtic looked at the back.

Celtic looked immense and LASK also. What a great game of football. LASK gave Celtic too much space at the edge of their 18yard box constantly.
Duran was superb. Can see Celtic scoring over there.

What a great ninety minutes, both teams really going for it, zipping their passes rapidly across the wet surface with fantastic first touch and interplay, and really well refereed too. If only every game was like that, seeing the Champions League after the Scottish Championship is always like watching a different sport! LASK’s xG last night was double Celtic’s and they surely won’t be as profligate next week, as others have said…

The number of times a team has retrieved a 4 goal deficit in Europe are very few and far between (Valencia 1962 for example) - Celtic now in that scenario, on the wrong side of such a rare achievement.

Kilmarnock v Eintracht Frankfurt in 1964 was an almost exact mirror image (minus the ET) of LASK v Celtic.
Killie lost the 1st leg 3-0 in Germany, lost an early goal at Rugby Park to be losing 4-0 on aggregate, but eventually won the 2nd leg 5-1 to progress.

It was certainly a surprise, but not a real shock for anyone who saw the first leg last week. Celtic scored 3 good goals, but the result completely flattered them. I think I said they weren`t a certainty to go through, but after scoring first last night, they should have been able to see the game out.

Totally agree. Celtic flattered themselves last week, but it is even more so galling for the whole Celtic support and management if they didn’t see this coming. They knew how dangerous LASK were to their defence and didn’t set up properly.
I would like to understand Martin O’Neil’s statement of “blame me” if the loss of revenue were to come out of his pocket and why the press didn’t push more - maybe they did but I didn’t see it in the short interviews I watched. It is not a reasonable response without him telling what he did wrong and how he can fix it.
Well done to LASK. Well deserved victory and over the two legs they were by far the better team and Scottish football needs to wake up to this reality as we continue to go backwards.

I thought that they looked a decent side for the first 3 halves of the Linz tie. It`s probably better for them - and O`Neill - to be in the Europa League as they have a fighting chance making a play-off game.
Better also that they don`t get another £50m or so from Champions League football.

I find it hard to understand why Scottish teams now do so badly in Europe compared with the latter part of last century, say, when we had Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen and Dundee United all getting to finals and other clubs, including oiurselves, getting occasional good results. I used to think it was because our players were stagnating whilst other countries` were improving but now all countries, including us, seem to recruit from all over the world but still we lag behind. According to UEFA`s Wikipedia entry:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA
"bringing the total of founding associations to 31.[5] UEFA grew to more than 50 members by the mid-1990s, as new associations were born out of the fragmentation of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia into their constituent states" "55 full member associations"
Scottish clubs are doing less well than in days gone by because the competition has almost doubled in size.
Money also clearly talks, big time. Celtic and Rangers struggle to compete money-wise when it comes to Europe.
Celtic should have parked the bus from the get go in the second leg and hit LASK on the counter.
