Went to watch Inter Miami when he was playing and obviously intently watched him more than others and questioned his effort during the game. He pops up. Scores. Then settles back to waiting for the next chance. And I am left thinking what a player.
I was also highly impressed with the opposition front line, but they ran about like crazy to get their goal. Messi chose his opportunities and caused chaos anytime his opportunity arose.
Would I want to watch him play all the time. No- not for me.
I must be one of those people that prefer to watch players run around đŹ
But is he the greatest of all time. Undoubtedly.

Undoubtedly the GOAT. He`ll be missed at international level and an all round good guy as well.

Not even the Argentinian GOAT - Maradona did it all with zero protection from referees

Great player - one of the best ever.
But THE best ever - not for me.
Pele won 3 world cups and was unceremoniously kicked out of 1966 by hatchet men. Could have been 4 had the matches been refereed by today`s standards.
Maradona was beautiful to watch, just a wonderful natural talent who just loved playing football. Won one World Cup, dragged his team to the final in 1990, and was looking like he was gonna do it again in 1994..until his cocaine habit brought him down. Maradona`s highlight reel puts Messi to shame.
Messi is great but the protection he gets from refs is borderline crazy (should have been off and banned for a few games after game 1 in the most recent WC, and should have been off for a blatant second yellow v Netherlands in 2022 - the bias towards Argentina in that match was an outright scandal).
Seeing footage of Messi doesn`t stir the emotions like footage of Pele or Maradona, or even Van Basten or Best.

If youâre going to compare Pele to Messi with todayâs refereeing standards.. let Messi play against defenders from the 60s. Heâd score 10 a game and thatâs no exaggeration.

The difference absolutely is that Messi was ALLOWED to play. Pele and others were indeed chopped to pieces. That is why Messi in my mind is the best. If Pele had the same protection we could be discussing Pele or Maradona but Pele was dismantled at times and Maradona was probably just hammered.
If the question was about who could have been the best all things being equal, then it is a different discussion.

I don`t see any Messi haters on here - just people making arguments and sharing opinions.
Stats can, and do, lie. All the time.
Unless you think Kurtis Patterson is the greatest test cricket batsman of all time?

Were it not for the relative brevity of his career, I would have always chosen Ronaldinho as the finest player that ever was. Certainly, no player has brought more joy to the game of football. His skill level far exceeded Messi`s, who regarded Ronaldinho as a role model in his early days at Barca. But like Maradona, Ronaldinho`s character was flawed and his career ended way too early.
My generation was brought up in awe of Pelé. Before him, it was Puskas and Di Stéfano. I saw Pelé play once, against Scotland at Hampden in early 1966, and he showed moments of genius, but 60 years on, I wouldn`t put him at the top either.
For me, it would be Cruyff or Ronaldo. And out of those two, I would choose Cruyff. Why? Because he had an understanding of space and movement that no other player before or since has matched. Ronaldo is/was capable of magical moments, but Cruyff was something quite differentâhe played a major part in transforming our game through the concept of "total football".
But if I were to select the best football player to watch the highlights of, it would always be the mercurial Ronaldinho. No one else comes close.

Standard millennium response when there is a difference of opinion and opportunity for debate, just throw out the tired âhaterâ response and exit the room đ€Šđ»ââïžThis generation is cooked đ

Bandy, Maradona was booted out of USA 94 for testing positive for Ephedrine, not cocaine. His autobiography, El Diego, is a great read.
An Italian mate was a Napoli ST holder during the Maradona years. He said the only way opponents could stop him was to kick him. He finished every game hobbling.
Very hard to choose the GOAT from so many wonderful players. You wonder what the likes of Maradona and George Best could have achieved if they hadn`t succumbed to drugs and alcohol, respectively.
Not your average Sunday League player.

Maradona played in an era where many opponents got away with harsh treatment yet he still shone.
He was superb in the 1986 World Cup. He was brilliant in the 2-0 semi final win over Belgium.
Iâve watched Messi since he made his debut for Barcelona. A wonderful player who scored many brilliant goals and assisted many more.
It`s bloody tough being a legend

I`m sure there will be many fans who think Messi is too easily knocked off the ball, disappears from the game for long spells and runs like a 6 year-old kid! OK, he scores a few goals but he could contribute so much more!
Joking apart, I would say Maradona was probably the most talented. In a funny way, maybe Messi and Ronaldo have diminished their reputations a wee bit by playing so long beyond their best years.

There definitely was until 2022. it`s interesting that he didn`t get the World Cup until well after his `peak` (with the help of some bizarre refereeing :) )
