Most Pars fans, me included, will feel that we should be winning games where we dominate possession. Bill Shankly used to say that your opponents can`t score when you have the ball, and that`s certainly true, but this recent article suggests that dominating possession is no guarantee of success.

Has been discussed many times GG .. I am sure I read somewhere .. maybe on here ? that possesion stats can be misleading .. There are many factors that count for possesion .. Play in your own half .. throw ins .. free kicks .. the keeper holding the ball .. So it is not necessarily dominance per se
November 2012 Celtic Park .. Barcelona 89% possesion and the Tic beat them

Prolonged periods of possession allow the opposition to get 10 men behind the ball and organised so that the opposition have to pick a way through them. We’ve got good players at the moment who retain the ball well and I imagine we have more of the ball in every game. However we pass and probe and pass and probe and sometimes there’s no way through. Consequently we hardly score any goals and are averaging less than a goal a game. You’re actually better off without the ball as you’ve got space to attack into when you do get it.

You make some good points, BPP, but the BBC article suggests that things have changed recently, albeit it`s referring to the PL. Not that long ago, Man City were dominating possession and winning the title by starving opponents of the ball. Recently, they had the lion`s share v Villa but lost.....

Some teams have used the 2nd ball tactic quite successfully. Sam Allerdyce used this approach with Bolton. Also Sean Dyche with Burnley. When hitting the long ball, you do not necessarily need to win the header, just have a supporting structure to recover the next ball and take advantage of the opposition temporarily being out of position.
John Wark scored a number of goals as a midfielder from in part picking a position where he could pick up partial clearance etc.from corners, knock downs or late runs into the box whilst defenders were occupied by the first ball.
I suppose its about mixing it up. NL stated that we are not blessed with dominating strikers to either win the ball or effectively challenge the centre backs so the tactic could be of little benefit in our case.
