My axe has a toe, heel, cheek, beard, throat, eye, shoulder, belly, butt and knob.
Some of these are wood.

Oh I definetly understood the point of the proverb. Of course it could have been argued that the trees are the working class and the axe was the labour party. They kept on voting for that axe but not anymore. Not now.
And although my eyes were open

Up until 1935 when their main spokesmen were arrested, there was at least one patriotic Jewish political group which supported Hitler and Naziism. It had supported the Nazis since at least the Munich Beer Hall putsch of 1924 and although it had no members of the Reichstag did wield some influence and published weekly periodicals read by a few thousand readers.
This seems bizarre to us now, especially since the infamous Nuremburg decrees were swiftly introduced once Hitler took power. It's not a part of history that is popular for research so information tends to be sketchy, but the logic seems to have been as follows. The richer Jews saw Hitler as the most effective bulwark against Communism and treated his anti-Semitic rantings as just political propaganda. Once Hitler was in power they expected him to tone down the rhetoric. Poorer Jews who suffered unemployment after the economic collapse were annoyed at fellow Jews from Eastern Europe coming in and lowering wage costs and thought that as German Jews they should have had priority.
The joke amongst anti-Nazis at the time was that the group's slogan was, 'Down with Us!' It didn't take long for the joke to turn sour.
