I read recently that someone is setting up a Fife Independence Party.
Is this a serious prospect, and if not, why not?

A return of the Pictish Kingdom. The only issue is that it was infiltrated by folks from the Kingdom of Strathclyde, most of whom reside in Central Fife and have those horrid west coast twangs.
I'd go for independence for Dunfermline District within Fife.

I read that his request to register the party was knocked back because the name would be too similar to an existing party.

It won’t be the first party with Fife in its name. In 1957 Lawrence Daly from Glencraig, formerly a hard line Stalinist within the Communist Party of Great Britain, left the CPGB to help found the Fife Socialist League. This was in response to the failure of the CPGB to hold the West Fife seat at Westminster recently occupied by Communist Willie Gallacher and more pressingly the Soviet decision to send troops into Hungary to quell a rebellion.
There was some initial success. The FSL, as part of the wider ‘New Left’ movement, won a couple of local council seats and managed 10% of the vote at the 1959 General Election. In the long term however Daly’s Fife Socialist League merely accelerated the demise of the Communist Party and made Fife a safe bet for Labour candidates. The Fife Socialist League was disbanded in 1964 and Daly himself joined the Labour Party around that time. Many locally never forgave Daly for what they perceived as treachery, although he was prominent in the successful Coalmining strikes of 1972 and 1974, the latter which led to the fall of a Conservative government.

It is not a serious project because I don`t think there are large volumes of the Fife population that think of Fife as being its own entity that has any sort of historical claim of independence and self governance.
And although my eyes were open

Fife must be one of the few regions in Scotland to have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Apart from some tinkering around the edges it's remained much the same whereas other regions have had boundaries changed a fair bit or been split up. I'd heard that back in the day they wanted to split Fife in two so that the south was controlled by Edinburgh and the north by Dundee. Thanks Christ that never happened or it'd be salt and sauce on chips in Dunfermline and peh on a roll in St Andrews.

Woah there! You mean a square. A sausage is just a sausage. A square/square sausage/square slice (or Lorne if you must) needs to be indicated in order to avoid the cylindrical alternative.
Also has to be a Baynes or Stephen's roll. None of this Morton's rubbish. In the case of the square, brown sauce (not chippy sauce) is the one to go for.
