An employee giving their employer a Ā£100k interest free loan to ease a cash flow crisis. No wonder this has realised a few eyebrows.

This is just SNP membersā€™ cash being recycled temporarily back to them.

Nothing odd at all..

So on the one hand we have a First Minister whose husband made an interest-free loan to the party which employs him which had been partly repaid by the end of the party`s financial year. The independent auditors of the accounts for that year saw no need to disclose this in the accounts. The Electoral Commission were informed later than required of this loan but did not consider it necessary to take any action other than to issue guidance to the party concerned.

On the other hand we had a Prime Minister who apparently cannot live within his means and has his life style financed by donations and gifts from supporters of his party. His reporting of these arrangements to the relevant authorities can be somewhat erratic.

It`s interesting to see how the media are reporting the Murrell loan, although it already seems to have dropped down the BBC`s news agenda. There are attempts to link it to previous stories of irregularities in the SNP`s finances, comparisons of the Murrells` finances with those of the majority of Scots who are struggling and even questions over the FM`s knowledge of this and whether it is right that her publicly-funded salary should be used to benefit her party! `If you chuck enough mud at a wall some of it will stick` seems to be the philosophy.

What I was pointing out is that there isn`t actually any substantial story about the Murrell loan other than the speculation whipped up by the unionist media and this should be compared with how the nefarious activities of an ex-Prime Minister were reported. `Whataboutery` is just a term coined to discourage any valid comparison with what goes on at Westminster where all sorts of shenanigans are just accepted as normal behaviour.

We should hold ourselves to our own standard, not that of Westminster.

Exactly, first prove that you can run a country then everything else will fall into place.

Mr Murrell could clear a lot of things up with a couple of statements, one detailing what the cashflow problem was that needed such a loan, and one to say that a lot of the Ā£600k was spent on campaigning activities which their legal advice indicated was permissible (assuming that that was in fact the case). And perhaps also why the loan hasnā€™t been fully repaid, which it might have been if it was just a temporary cash-flow issue.

The fact he doesnā€™t do either (and that they try to fob people off with ā€œnon-denial denialsā€ and the like) makes one suspicious.

And while we are on transparency, the party leaders used to publish their tax statements at election time ā€“ donā€™t we do that any more?
