That article is a disgrace to journalism.
This entire paragraph is utter jibberish:
"Naz Anis-Miah, a local councillor, is said to be the leading candidate for the seat and is purportedly backed by Shirley-Anne Somerville, the social justice secretary, although she will not publicly back any candidate."
So an MSP who, *checks notes* cannot back an MP candidate, is backing an MP candidate...but not really.
Surely any journalist covering politics knows that MSPs are separate to MSPs? Any influence in terms of Douglas Chapman`s future as an SNP MP would come from other SNP MPs or from the senior figures within the party.

What would you expect from the MSM....better sticking with the bloggers they don`t have an agenda to follow to earn their keep.

Isn`t Shirley-Anne Somerville both the local MSP and a senior member of the party? Does the former not give her a vote in the selection of the Westminster Candidate?

Not sure MT but either way she wouldn`t openly endorse a candidate. What feels odd is the supposed candidate is a councillor. Is it normal to see councillor to MP? I don`t think they`ve even been a councillor for that long. That said, the Lib Dems let Alex Cole-Hamilton become leader in Scotland and his main achievement whilst a councillor in Edinburgh was pushing for an airport bus that served tourist hotspots like Muirhouse, Pilton and Granton...
Perhaps I`m a touch naive, but I don`t understand why there seem to be a handful of SNP politicians who dislike how the party is run but neither seek to improve it nor choose to leave. I suppose it may be tough to leave when the alternative is Alba!

Hard to leave when you hitched to the gravy train.
Let`s face it they`ve been the laziest MSPs and MPs in Britain...what have they achieved ? Certainly not Independence.
Don't even mention the word until 6 weeks before an election
This little ditty was on fb before the applications for the leadership

But they haven`t achieved independence as there`s no route to independence according to Westminster. The UK is the Hotel California - you can check out anytime you like but can never leave.

So are we still having a referendum in October now? Wee Nic promised us one or did they get elected by lying.

They can do a referendum but it would just be like the Catalonian one. Pointless.

is quite funny that we keep getting told it`s a voluntary union, but then when asked, there`s no formal route to independence - apart from on the whim of the unionist Westminster prime minister.
Could you imagine the uproar and headlines if after David Cameron won the election, he was told by the EU president that he`s not allowed to hold a brexit referendum!

Tenruh blaming the SNP for there not being an independence referendum is laughable. How long has he been following politics if he doesn`t know the difference between an aspiration and a cast-iron promise which is within your control?
It`s interesting that the mainstream media seem to have no concerns about the lack of democracy in the constitution of the Union. They`re much more interested in the internal politics of the SNP.

It’s a pretty common pathway for people to be councillors before becoming MPs (either that or being a research assistant or suchlike). A quick(ish) count suggests that 23 out of Scotland’s 59 MPs were formerly Local Authority councillors (so about 40%). Whether that indicates a willingness to do public service, or a desire to be on “the gravy train” may be for others to judge. A bit of both, probably. Some will have been elected “by accident”.
In practical terms, you could see serving as a councillor as a useful apprenticeship in managing budgets and juggling priorities and building consensus to achieve change. I do feel that a bit of real-world knowledge and private sector experience wouldn’t go amiss either.
I suspect that Douglas Chapman blotted his copybook by resigning as Party Treasurer, providing the excuse for people to try to deselect him. I believe SAS lives in North Queensferry which would normally get her a vote in selecting the Westminster candidate. Is it any surprise she’s trying to get an ally elected?

Who else would you blame if the political party in government offers you a referendum if you vote them into office ?
How did it take 8 years for them to find out they (nuSNP) didn`t have the controls to make that promise ?

they have to offer a referendum in the manifesto, and win that vote, in order to be in a position and have a mandate to even ask the question if we`re allowed to have one.
What route to independence are you suggesting they should have taken?

They shouldn`t offer a referendum if it`s not in their power to deliver one .
It`s not for me to suggest a route to independence when none is achievable unfortunately.

I`ve met dozens of MPs, MSPs, councillors and 3 PMs all but a couple of the PMs have been highly unimpressive.
It`s safe to say no matter what party or faction they belong to we are not sending our best to fill the halls of power.
