Having been a member many years ago I am astounded at the direction Starmer is taking them in, the Labour leader in Scotland doesn`t know what way he`s supposed to go.

Latest from London, "we won`t be restoring freedom of movement " this is a sure vote winner!

Strangely the indiscretions of a Fife Labour Councillor aren`t being revealed on MSM, particularly strange 🤔

Edinburgh Leisure not paying the living wage and Labour Councillors not going to support the SNP motion for restoration 🤔

Oh hold on Labour have done a uturn!

As schools in England shut before collapsing, the finger points at Gove and his 2010 cancelling of inspections.

What an absolute mess the UK is in as Tories push for Sunak to be removed, only to vote for another clown!🤡🥳👹

I gave up on Labour when Tony Blair became the main man and the Lib Dems with their abomination after the first Scottish Elections.

In 1983 a mate of mine persuaded me to go along to a Young Socialists meeting at the Transport and General Workers Union on Victoria Street.
There was a talk from a local Labour representative he spoke of various world issues but near the end of his talk he made the statement that "Labour are a party who are there to help the poor."
Now if he had left it at that I would have been happy but he continued "but we can`t help them too much because poor people vote Labour"
I was disgusted by this but from that day I see these actions in absolutely everything Labour do.

Ah yes some wet behind the lugs activist laid the foundations of Labour policies on poverty. Garbage.
As for schools in Scotland, Gove has sod all to with them and never did, so who’s to blame if any of them are defective?

Gove could potentially be to blame for the scores of schools in England closing because they are at risk of collapse. I`m sure I did read a little while back about such problems being evident in Scottish public buildings but maybe they took the warnings more seriously up here and got on top of the situation. Or maybe not.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Wasn`t just some young activist. I`m certain it was a councillor. Their surname may have been Martin but not 100% on that.

While on the subject of Labour Councillors, why is this alleged child sex offender not all over the National news. Can be certain if it was an SNP Councillor it would be.

A government safety bulletin was put out about RAAC concrete in 2018 but structural engineers and building surveyors working for councils and government bodies should have been well aware of what to watch out for way way back.
If RAAC is used and the surrounding building fabric is properly maintained it will last many years beyond its design life.
The problem is that roofs were not properly maintained and water seeped into the RAAC causing the steel reinforcement within to rust, spall the concrete, and ultimately fail. Especially if loads that it wasn`t designed to carry e.g. roof mounted plant were placed on top and/or holes were cut in it for pipework and other penetrations.
IMHO the government are an easy target here unless they were ignoring the advice of the professionals whose job it is to be identifying and monitoring such risks.

My youngest grand daughter has attended two primary schools in Fife and they were built of stone over 100 years ago. Needless to say they are both still standing although I am sure there has been much interior work done over that time.

Inverkeithing HS was opened in 1973, `state of the art` for its time we were informed, and is now I understand a condemned building. Look at the new school `estates` built at Dunfermline HS, Levenmouth and Viewforth and place a bet on how long they will serve the taxpayers of Fife.

`Penny wise, pound foolish` comes to mind. Are there any investigative journalists working for The Dunfermline Press or The Fife Free Press?

So Gove stopped the Labour Government schools replacement scheme, a UK initiative since we`re " all in it together "

No Scottish schools shut?

No doubt a passing Yoon will be commenting soon!

I`m going to go out on a limb here and say that before long Scottish some schools will be closing because of this concrete problem. I mean this crumbling concrete was used to build many dozens of schools in Scotland.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I am not going out on a limb here to say that school building in Scotland is entirely a matter for Scottish local authorities and UK goverments never had any involvement in it.
I must also echo Sammer’s remarks on older schools, they built them to last back then but can be expensive to upgrade internally. A warren of wee rooms and narrow corridors from my experience.

The crumbly concrete was used between 1950 and the early 1990s.

there seems to be a lot of issues with concrete used in buildings and not just in the UK...

we`ve often thought about moving across to Donegal/Sligo area and often spend the odd evening looking at houses/plots for sale - and the number of times I`ve seen something really nice and then remembered, it`ll have been built using MICA

in fact, any house built between 1980 and 2011 is a no-go in terms of buying as will have been constructed with defective MICA concrete

I see Sir Keir is reshuffling his shadow Cabinet. He isn`t exactly spoiled for choice if he wants to change the shadow Secretary of State for Scotland unless he appoints an MP from another nation.

After the next election he`ll have plenty of options and it won`t be for a shadow position.

You`re going out on a limb there. I don`t know why we bother having elections when we have such reliable opinion polls.

The election hasn`t been declared yet but it`s OK for the Westminster parties to campaign for it now, but in Scotland the government should get on with the day job instead of talking about an independence referendum. We know our place.

Needs to be some clarity here that there are two parts to this:

- Who signed off the use of it?
- Who failed to acknowledge the issue/maintain the buildings

My understanding is that this is a bigger issue in England as the second part wasn`t followed up on so the risk of an issue is greater as there are more buildings where the status isn`t known.

Hootsman has seen emails which prove risky concrete in schools was reported to Scotgov over a year ago…what have they done about it?

Most Scottish councils have a rolling inspection programme for RAAC. Labour/Tory run West Lothian Council as an example invested £10m at the start of the year to fix structural issues at 3 of the 5 schools identified in the region.
Of the schools identified with issues elsewhere SNP/Labour run council area of Dumfries and Galloway has 3, Tory/Labour run Aberdeen has 7 and Labour/Tory Edinburgh Council dominate the numbers with 7 also.
So with West Lothian, Aberdeen and Edinburgh combined that`s 19 is the 30 named schools in those Tory/Labour grubby coalition areas.
This might explain why neither of these parties seem to be making a big issue of it up here.

Yeah, but apart from that, what else are they doing?

I see the Times is reporting that the most recent poll by YouGov gives the SNP an 11% lead over Labour in a Westminster election - 38% to 27%. Sir John Curtice reckons this might highlight Labour`s problem of having to woo both Tory voters and SNP voters which is a difficult balancing act to pull off.
