The Lidl in Kirkcaldy was doing this a couple of years ago. Don`t know if they still do. Just shows there was no need for the Scottish Government to waste tens of millions of pounds on their scheme which would have added to price we pay at the tills for many items when Lidl is doing it off their own back.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Presumably Lidl`s scheme doesn`t cover the whole of the country and, if it`s for bottles, is it only taking glass? We`re still waiting to hear from Westminster details of the UK scheme which is going to exclude bottles for some reason.

You would think it would make sense for the big supermarkets to do this. Presumably if people returned their glass, plastic and tins to the place they bought it, the supermarkets can recycle these. There is bound to be money to be made for them in recycling

As far as I can gather Lidl`s scheme is being trialled at their stores in Glasgow and relates to drinks containers made from aluminium and a certain type of recyclable plastic they use. Shoppers will receive 5p per item which they can redeem against their shopping or donate to charity. The reverse-vending machines will scan a barcode on the product so only their containers will be valid.
