 Speed cameras near Queensferry Crossing
Topic Originator: Raymie the Legend

Got flashed coming north tonight about 1 mile south of the bridge, after where the Edinburgh and Glasgow traffic merge
Anyone know if I’ll receive a ticket?

Depends if you were speeding. Sounds silly I know, but I got flashed on the spur when I knew for a fact I was under the limit, never got anything so assuming it was testing of some sorts.

If you were doing 60, and it said 40, then you deserve a ticket

I think you passed me when it went off Raymie! Were you on the queensferry slip road when it went off? To be honest, those speed limits at that time of day are absolutely ludicrous. People are slowing down when they don’t have to and it just makes things worse. The new bridge is a farce. It’s made no change to anything. There’s not even lights on it ffs!

100 pond fine and 3 points incoming. I think you will hear in around a week Raymie. They are sharpish sending the letter out.

Got busted doing 44 in a 30 recently (lesson learned) and got the above fine & points applied.

Ask to see the photo but if Zod was in it you might be ok anyway. Yon pus would crack a camera lense 😁

More folk leaving at a common time?

Quality of driving is shocking on a Friday as well. Noticeably worse than the rest of the week IMO.

Going southbound each morning is horrific apart from a Friday as it’s quieter for some reason so where does all the traffic on a Friday come from? It’s a mystery. A bigger mystery is why once you get on the bridge going northbound when it’s busy, do people always brake to almost a standstill? It happens every day. It’s not as if there is a slip road once you’re on the bridge. Baffling.

The camera takes multiple photos during the flash and from the lines on the road they can tell which vehicle in the photo was the one speeding.

Far too many people in the roads that can’t actually drive properly.

Dave - they cause a lot of the congestion by needlessly imposing speed restrictions. The crossing was supposed to be an extension of the motorway. It will never happen.

The best idea would just be to impose an average speed and be done with all the fannying about

"Dave - they cause a lot of the congestion by needlessly imposing speed restrictions. The crossing was supposed to be an extension of the motorway. It will never happen."

A lot of the congestion is caused by folk with no patience who zoom up the slip road then down the other side, meaning people in lane 1 have to stop/slow to allow those folk to filter in. This then encourages people to try and move into lane 2 since that's moving more freely. Of course this means people in lane 2 have to slow down or stop to let them filter in, which causes the queue to form. The concertina effect is well known in traffic modelling and is the reason there are often long queues that seem to clear randomly without an accident or set of roadworks on sight.

If the slip road was better signalled or that manoeuvre wasn't allowed somehow, there would be a better flow in lane 1 with less stopping/slowing. As I said when the new bridge was designed, there was also going to be am issue with 3 lanes going down to 2 then 2 further lanes coming in from the Queensferry junction.

Or even worse, the folk who zoom along the inside then cut into lane 1 again just before the slip road up. Heard many a horn of folk 'legitametely' heading up the slip, having to slam on brakes as someone waits to cut back in. Only a matter of time before a serious collision at that point.

So Kelty, how do you explain coming to a stop half way across the bridge?

Pretty much any modelling software Pars Al. There was a whole documentary about that sort of thing about 15 years ago which explained why there were so many long queues when there were no roadworks or accidents. Sadly the Council didn't seem to use it when designing the sequence for the traffic lights at Sinclair Gardens or the Halbeath M90 junction. There have been been undergraduate projects showing how you could remodel the lights on Union Street in Aberdeen so that there could be a constant flow (although civil engineers often don't want a constant flow in a busy street to avoid the change of speeding/allow for bus stops etc).

I can't say for sure why folk slow down so much on the bridge but people coming back from lane 2 into lane 1 because they're coming off at one of the first two junctions will likely cause come issues. Having people stay in their lanes and maintaining a fairly constant speed (even if that means obeying the Smart Motorway limits, which some folk seem to have a problem with) will make the whole bridge flow a lot smoother. Sadly there are too many folk on the road who think that they should have priority over everyone else and that they should just weave back and forward, go above the speed limits and cut folk off.

Thanks. Thought you had done the modelling.

Fife Council don't have anything to do with Halbeath, that's BEAR.

Sinclair Gardens works quite well I think.

Generally it's OK but the signalled crossing at the top of Carnegie Drive are a pain when you end up with cars queuing on the roundabout and some of the timings are a bit iffy. It's probably better than it was previously though.

Once you get to the other side of the bridge it’s always always clear of traffic
