 Long Island NY

Does anyone know this part of the world? Going one day of the PGA at Bethpage Black in May next year so making it a bit of family trip.

I have booked NYC digs but as the bairn will be a little over 2 I think it will be better staying in a wee town or near a beach in Long Island and maybe just go to NYC for a day trip.
So thinking of something reasonable driving distance from JFK up to an hours drive from Famingdale (for the golf) and striking distance of NYC train line (albeit could park and ride)

Any local knowledge appreciated.

I worked in Farmingdale for a few months on a work exchange. Magic wee town. The LIRR station is in the middle of the town, for access to NYC, and easily accessible. Hicksville, Smithtown would be great places to stay. Close to the beach

Visited the area with work about 20 years ago. The area around Port Jefferson is nice with beaches nearby.
The LIRR is really good for getting right into Penn station near Madison Square Garden.
Don't forget Amityville if you like your horror films!
