 Used Cars?
Topic Originator: neilholland999

Morning all.

I'm changing jobs soon, so will soon be on the look out for a 2nd hand car. My budget will be approx £3.5K. Any recommendations on which cars to look out for and/or avoid? My main criteria will be fuel efficiency and cheap to insure!

Thanks
Neil

Buy from a dealer, check mot & service history, cant go wrong with a ford or a vw

Had loads of used cars over the years, should pick up something reasonable for that, thats usually my budget too
Diesels should be a good buy too, since noones gonna be wanting them soon, I stick to diesels, gd luck !

no car since 2005ish should be a rustbucket
I recently had a 13 year old passat from 2003, and apart from the wheel arches, was sound, my best car ever in fact, bought it for 2k

currently have a 2009, 2006 & 1997 in household, and none are rustbuckets

unlucky above DRFC

Buying a car new or old is a lottery.
Ye just never know what your gonna get.
Best advice I can give is to take someone with a bit of knowledge of motors when you go to buy one.
I bought my first ever motor in 1987 by the side of the road.... Cos I'd just passed my test the previous week and I couldn't wait to get mobile... So I bought it... Despite my father (he was a mechanic) telling me it was a wreck.
He was right... The thing was never out of garages being fixed and I scrapped it after a year.
Lesson learned.

Was an 07 plate and a nightmare:

Within a week of having it exhaust bracket snapped (they replaced entire back box free of charge)

Year later brake calliper seized (I was a little daft with it after)

6 months later 2 wheel bearings went then 6 months after that the suspension collapsed.

Got a service done after that and paid something like £500 for repairs and that wasnt even everything.

Less than a year later suspension collapsed again on other side so scrapped it, waited two months n got my Mazda.

Mazda same age and only had to replace the rear brakes (on advice of garage before trip to ICT last season), tyres, a calliper and anti roll bars.

Ford failed every MOT for some rust issue, Mazda sailed its MOT in May. Just hate Fords now 😂😂

Seriously, you had one Ford, your first car and you admit you bought a rustbucket. A few things predictably go wrong so all Fords are crap?

Hmmmm!

Back in the late 80s early 90s fords didn't have a great name... But times change and I've heard nothing but good things about them in the last 10/15 years.
Never had a ford masel... But I did have the pleasure of company transits for about 10 years.... They are brilliant and pretty bullet proof.
I'd buy a Ford in a heartbeat.

Like someone said, it would need to be an old one to rust like that.
I drove many different cars when doing taxis. Skodas cheap and reliable (superb or octavia). Mondeos good too, and my favourite were the Ford Galaxys. Excellent.

I've had Ford's pretty much my entire driving life except for a Metro given to me as my first car.

I've had an Escort XR3i, a mark III Fiesta (that rusted slightly but was more to do with the mrs scraping it and her cheapskate dad carrying out a terrible repair), a Focus, mark II/III/IV Mondeo's, an S-Max, and now a Kuga. None of the others had any issues whatsoever with rust. There is also a 7 year paintwork gaurantee with Ford's so if they rust, and it's got a service history, there's a good chance they'll repair it.

Out of that, only the S-Max, which I loved as a car, was a bucket, the definition of a Friday car. 4 years old when I got rid, had it from a year old and it had various trim always falling off, the alternator replaced twice, the clutch (after 42k) the bonnet catch repaired twice, and discs and pads front and back before 40k, as well as tyres. Spent nearly £2k on it for repairs. My theory on that is it was one of the early models, and from when I worked there, the early models, especially a new model, usually had some issues. The second models are usually great.

That being said, I can honestly say the rest barely cost me a penny other than wear and tear you'd expect. Mondeo's in particular are almost indestructible. I just traded mine in last year at 90k and I could happily have kept it. There is a reason why so many fleet companies use them, and why you see so many as taxi's.

To say all Ford's are crap and liable to break down just isn't true.

90k for a used Ford is not a bad sale.
