Loved listening to him speak also. Had a great eloquence about him. Not sure we will ever see his like again in journalism.

I thought he had died a while ago. Did he maybe have a journalist brother?

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

William McIlvanney was his brother. He was a writer and poet. He died a few years ago.

He had a warm rapport with Big Jock over many years and wrote some great stuff.

A colossus among sports writers - RIP.

The world's a poorer place as of today. A wonderful journalist who wrote and spoke with humility, style and class.

 RIP Hugh.

Not your average Sunday League player.

Echo all of the above. I loved McIlvaney’s writing on a diverse range of topics. His book on boxing is fabulous and he is the standard to which all good sports writers should aspire. A very sad day indeed. RIP Hugh.

RIP Hugh. Had a column in the Sunday Times for years which was brilliant. Sad news.

The greatest sportswriter of his generation. Football, boxing, horse racing, whatever. He mastered them all.
 RIP Hugh.

Wonderful series of interviews on BBC Sounds:

I've listened to first three so far , brings back some great memories of football and boxing in the 60s/70s/80s.

 Really worth listening to.
