 Six nations
Topic Originator: desparado

Well it is that time of year again, looking forward to it as usual.

Got a feeling that Scotland will struggle this year. A multitude of injuries will not help so the squad is down to the bare bones.

Hogg, Russel and Laidlaw, our “ talismen “ need to perform as we tend to rely on them.

Just can’t see us beating Ireland, Wales or England and we have not won in Paris for ages.

Could it be just 1 win in 5... against Italy? Finishing second bottom as we did regularly a few years ago?

Hopefully get off to a winning start tomorrow , need a bonus point win and maybe the confidence will see us shock Ireland as we did two years ago , if so then who knows?

But I am predicting a win v Italy, then three loses before we take on France in Paris in the last round. If there is nothing to play for by then we might sneak another win.

Just noticed that it is England we play last.

So my prediction is one win in five.

Unfortunately I'd have to agree with your most excellent summing up of our chances this year.anything more that one win will be a bonus. I also predict a dip in form for both Edinburgh and Glasgow while the six nations is on.
Is there a game on tonight?
Is it on council telly?

Based on tonight Scotland could beat Wales and maybe also Ireland with a bit of luck. Repeat of 2017?

Should beat Italy and perhaps a win away from home for the first time in a while v France.

Vino must be talking!

Hmmm
Wales weren't great especially in the first half but still managed to beat a French side that are a better team than last time around imo.
Wales will take a lot of confidence from that.
I predict a thumping for England tomorrow and a tight win for Scotland.
I'd be very surprised if Ireland aren't at the top of the table after these first games are done and dusted.

After last night I see no reason why we can't beat Wales, or France for that matter. Only issue is our depleted forward line but if Seymour, Hogg, Laidlaw etc are in form we've more than enough to win. England and Ireland will likely destroy us though

Not often we can say that this early.
Italy are poorer than I thought they would be... But ye can only beat what's in front of ye
Edited to add... Thinking you're home and dry after having a man sent to the bin is a dangerous mindset... A better team could have caught us out there in the end.

To lose 19 points in the last 10 minutes even with a man short is careless at best.
A comfortable win feels almost like a defeat.

Lack of concentration and giving up simple penalties will be heavily punished by Ireland.

Scotland done what they had to yesterday but switching off like that at the end was unprofessional.

Ireland will be like a wounded animal next week at Murrayfield.

Defensively we are a worry and Ireland will exploit that.

Scotland ripped Ireland apart in Dublin last year and made five clear try scoring opportunities and only took two. We will need to take chances next week to be in with a shout.

Think the forwards will get bullied though and ultimately cost us the game.

Hope to be proved wrong.

Very surprised to see Kinghorn dropped to the bench. Imagine a football manager dropping a forward who had scored a hat-trick in his previous game.

Townsend going for experience obviously by bringing Maitland back in.

Good to see some changes in the pack with Jonny Gray and Straus both starting, along with Berghan. I assume Nel must be injured......again.

Ireland will be hurting after last week, will they get it together and crush the Scots hopes or will Scotland continue their fantastic home form?

Weather will play a big part as it is going to be blowing a hoolie.

I wouldn’t say Kinghorn was “dropped”. He is essentially a full back. Still, a tough choice to make.

The back three combination of Hogg, Seymour and Maitland is tried and tested at Glasgow and given the Irish strength all over the pitch we need to use all the experience we have. This is no match for sentiment.

A repeat of two years ago would be great but hard to see. Could go either way.

We need to play our own game as we don’t have the physicality up front that England had last week. Ball retention will be key and let’s stop giving up needless penalties as we did last week.

Late hit on Hogg by O’Mahoney

But I think we were good enough most of the time. Did you see the half time stats. We lost due to 2 interceptions caused by 2 bad errors. We made other errors too but mostly we looked good enough.

Yeah but it's not about looking good enough... You have to be able to back it up with points on the board. We didn't... They did.. And that was a poor performance from Ireland too let's not forget.
So... To sum up... Not good enough today.
On any other day... Who knows???
On the upside... We're still above Ireland in the table at least 😜

Except many of England's kicks were very well judged/ weighted flat along the deck. Dont think I have seen such well executed accurate kicking, the ball hardly bounced.

Never been totally convinced Weir is International class.

Before he moved South he struggled to get a game at Glasgow as I recall before going briefly to Edinburgh.

Another error strewn performance against a pumped up French team. Last thing we needed was them to get early scores.

Played better in the second half when we upped the pace but didn’t make enough of the possession we had and again turned the ball over at key moments.

Not looking like a good season despite the early promise.

Ah well.....

We have a lot of key players missing tbh, but I am not overly confident that Townsend is improving us.

Defensively we are poor. France scores four try’s and could have had a few more tbh.

When we have possession and get into the oppositions 22 our conversion rate is poor.

To have a man advantage, get penalised for an infringement under the French posts and lose a line out , conceed a try that was later ruled out by the tmo and lose three points to a penalty and score no points in that ten minute period was very poor and that is what ultimately cost us the game.

We are not clinical enough and too weak in key areas.

I was very hopeful a year ago that we could make a real impression in this years six nations and indeed the World Cup, not now.

Looks like we are heading back to the days when we will be vying with Italy for bottom spot again.

I think it's a tad unfair to compare Scotland with Wales. They're miles ahead of us internationally.
Let's be brutally honest... We beat Italy most years (a few blips aside)... And get the odd win here and there now and then.
But when all is said and done we are the 5th best side in the 6 nations and nothing will change as long as we only have 2 club sides (Glasgow and Edinburgh) to choose from (with a few exceptions)

Well Wales have 4 Pro 14 sides... The same as Ireland... And Ireland are doing pretty well in the pro 14 and Europe and internationally... So someone at the wru needs to do a rethink if they think following our model is the way to go.
Only my opinion of course 😉

Interesting to note that Ireland were really poor yesterday by their own standards... But still managed the win.
When we have off days we get hammered.
But then... I suppose its not fair to compare us to Ireland either. They are streets ahead of us.
Who could you compare Scotland with in the 6 nations ?
Probably Italy to be fair... They've beaten us a few times and we regularly battle with them to avoid the wooden spoon.

We were on a par with Italy a few years ago but we seemed to improve a lot recently.
I dont know if it was down to unavailability of injured players but we looked very lightweight against France. You can see there is quality there but we need to back it up with physicality or we are going nowhere.
We look like a team of 7s players.
Skillful and athletic put powderpuff compared to the top teams.

Bold decision by Townsend to start with Ali Price at scrum half and dropping his captain, Laidlaw, to the bench.
Clearly a declaration of intent to play the game on the front foot against the Welsh.
A decision I welcome.
Laidlaw’s style of play with slow ball allows the opposing side to set up their defence and makes it harder for our backs to make a breakthrough.

Here’s hoping we improve on our showing so far this Championship.
Would love to see Gatland’s team taken down a peg.

Looking forward to seeing if Darcy Graham can cut it at this level.
If he gets room to run he will do well.

A repeat of two years ago would be great!

Return of Russell and Nel should strengthen us in key areas.

Just hope Price has learnt from the disaster of Cardiff last year.

Weather conditions should suit Wales.
Bit worried about the comparative inexperience at this level of our backs against a very seasoned and settled Welsh team.

Need to cut out the errors and silly penalties or we will get severely punished. Still remember some of the kamikaze passing of Price and Russell last year in Cardiff.

David v Goliath on the wing.

Darcy Graham: age 21, 2 caps. Height: 5 ft 9ins. Weight: 11st 11ibs.

George North: age 26, 81 caps. Height: 6ft 4 inches. Weight: 17st 2 ibs.

What a matchup!

Another thrashing on the cards I’m afraid. 6-15 H/t.

Welsh very physical and playing well within themselves.

Scotland making usual errors and conceding cheap penalties. Only mitigating factor has been the injuries to key players in the first half which have been disruptive.

Valiant second half from Scotland but full credit to a solid Welsh defence for holding out wave after wave of attacks.

Good second half shift by Scotland but Welsh defence and lack of a cutting edge was our downfall in the end.

11-18.

Amazing thing. They batter the shecht out each other for 80 minutes then they are all hand shaking back patting pals showing respect. Post match comments respecting the losers too.
Football is disgusting compared to rugby.

Hard game to judge him as injuries in first half meant half the defence were out of position.
Did finish off with a good try at the only time our attack penetrated the Welsh defence who were very strong.

Taken off later with a minor injury,

Only consolation from this year’s 6 Nations is we can’t get the Wooden Spoon with one game to go.

There’s always the World Cup!

Have absolutely no expectations about this game other than an England win.

Injuries to key players clearly make a depleted side who even at full strength would struggle.

Just hope we can stay in the game longer than we did two years ago.
Keeping 15 on the field would help.

Ireland royally thumped by Wales.
France somehow manage to beat Italy despite Italy arguably being the better team over 80 mins.
And now... To Twickenham...
I don't expect much so any points we get are a bonus.

It's no mystery... We're just not very good.
We have our occasional brilliant match when everything clicks... But they're too few & far between.
We certainly don't have the talent to win 5 games and win it.

We can be good at times...
If we'd been really really good we would have won that today... But we didn't.
Credit where credits due for that second half performance... But a draw is scant consolation... We should have won.
At least we keep hold of the Calcutta Cup.

After coming back and taking the lead, It felt like a loss. 4th minute over time ughhh! All it needed was a fumble or a Scottish boot reaching the ball.
Then I realised we retained the cup so it actually feels like a victory.

What an incredible fightback. One of the most amazing come backs I have ever seen. Farrell was lucky not be carded for that high shoulder hit. Pity we didn’t manage to hold on for the first win at Twickenham since 1983, but at least we retain the Calcutta Cup.

Extraordinary match. We started sluggish and were lucky it was only 31 at half time but what a turnaround in the second half.
England looked like amateurs for long periods and you could see the confidence flowing through Scotland after our second try.
Different attitude with 'nothing to lose' attitude and enjoyed every minute of that half apart from the last two obviously.
But for our kicking we would have won a famous victory.

We should have let England score in the corner when they had the penalty advantage at the death, and forced Ford or whomever would have been kicking the conversion into a difficult kick to save the match. He might have got it but there was a chance he'd have missed.

I'll openly admit to knowing very little about rugby but it seemed to me that keeping possession was what was needed toward the end. I couldn't figure out why, when Scotland had the ball in the middle of the park late-on, they kicked it deep and gave England possession.

I can't help feeling that Russell and Laidlaw would normally have been successful with the two conversions they failed with. Russell in particular seemed to rush his kick. Maybe he didn't think it would be significant.
