Measles can be treated with rest and fluids.

Can be serious for the very young or the elderly though.

Serious side effects from the vaccine are fortunately much higher than 1 in 10,000.

It's not about the fatalities. It's all the other complications. Blindness, deafness etc. Just get everyone vaccinated. It's a no grainer.

Indeed Movie but its not just the complications. Some people can't get the vaccination because of a suppressed immune system and rely on 'herd' immunity to protect them.

Measles was practically wiped out in the developed world until that idiot associated it with autism. It's a disease that we have the ability to rid the world of but some people listen to nonsense.

Some may chose not to vaccinate but by doing so they are putting others including those young enough not yet vaccinated at risk of other complications.

Totally selfish and irresponsible.

Better diagnosis. In the past people just weren't diagnosed as autistic.

Very much better diagnosis. Years ago the term was barely used. People with autism were just considered a bit strange.

Autism is definitely something that's only recently started being diagnosed, and even then there are loads of issues just thrown under that Umbrella. Nobody really knows what causes it but imo its just a general genetic defect with likely some environmental factors impacting it.

Antivaxers are the worst kind of idiots. Stupid people like flat earthers, humans in space deniers etc are fine, they're harmless, but antivaxers are actually dangerous.

I can understand the fear parents have about the vaccination so I won't criticise them. I remember it like it was yesterday. All 3 of my kids, now in their 30s, caused me an the missus hellish anxiety when we took them for it.
First one was 1982 when the scare was at its height. I was worried but the wife was traumatised. The doctor was obviously concerned about it too. He didnt want to do it. He actually picked up the vaccine and read the instructions out loud. Louisa just left in tears with the baby. If he hadnt been elderly I would have smacked him in the mouth. I was so angry.

It was poorly reported historically, in my opinion. And the press have to take some of the blame.

We went down the separate jabs route. More expensive but it gave us peace of mind.

The biggest concern we had was the direct cause and effect between jab and autism - all the "within a week, our child had changed" stories massively increased our concern.

I don't.

On balance, getting it certainly seems better than not. There have been a lot of studies which have not proved any direct link, and certainly with a lot more children than Wakefield's paper.

Any decision that affects risk to your kids, real or not, is a hard one.

Nothing is ever 100% safe though. Yes the risk is tiny but if your child happens to be one of the very small minority affected then you do regard vaccinations in a different light.

I think that's the thing that sits uneasily with me......his hypothesis at the start was that it was the combined vaccinations which caused the problem.

Singular vaccines obviously have cost implications, and the response appeared to be to play the man and not the ball.

I would have been much happier if the response would have been to look at that point in a measured way.

I think we have all seen enough instances of commercials taking precedence over human well being to last us a lifetime.

However the odds of being severely impacted by complications of measles are much higher than being severely impacted by side effects of the inoculation.

Ipswich has the combined vaccination been proven to be riskier than single shots?

Nope. But that's with the benefit of 15 years' hindsight. Which is why I feel differently about it now; or at least that's one of the reasons.

It was different when that paper was published.

It is quite different from the flat earther position. Corporates and government putting profit above welfare wouldn't have been a first. It is wholly understandable that parents' were concerned back then.

It is different from the flat earther proposition.
Coroporations at times do put profit before safety concerns and governments also have skewed priorities at times. However I assume it was a private medical company that you had to go through to get the separate vaccinations so it would appear some corporations made a profit from that misleading medical paper.

Yes. Agreed. And it might even be that Wakefield himself made money from the paper.

Sometimes we will only when things are used on the mass population.

And it's a weakness of mine that I am more cynical and risk averse than I should be.

Wakefield publishing that paper was all about him getting more money - I'm sure he had applied for a patent for a different MMR vaccine (one that I'm sure he claimed was a lot safer than the current vaccine). The fact that anti-vaxers get air time on the news etc. is shameful, but of course we have to have "balance" on the airwaves.
