 At Home Schooling

Has anyone done this?

My kids are S3 at Woodmill and their syllabus has been amended to a General Education rather than the subject they chose to study.

What this means is that, for example, they will be taught Sciences (ie Chemistry, Physics and Biology). So if they chose to study one of these subjects, then two hours are given over to subjects they do not want to pursue.

In other words, they will only get a third of the hours on their selected subject/s.

So I am looking at home schooling or evening classes. Does anyone have any experience of the above, costs etc?

Cheers

Only for primary I'm afraid

I feel for you....the core stuff like english and maths is really important and I think you'll need someone available not only to teach the content but also prepare for exams.

It is an awful situation. Primary school material (which I have experience of) can be covered by a parent in my opinion but not secondary unless they are suitably qualified and have used it recently).

If it were me, I'd be working out how to use the education system and supplement it rather than homeschool.

The social aspect shouldnt be underestimated either.

So they're combining physics, chemistry and biology into one generic "science" subject? Whilst there's overlap between them, I'd say the likes of physics is more aligned with technical studies.

What exams will they do in their 4th year?

I'd imagine things are way more advanced but when I was in school there were resources like BBC Bitesize and also CDs/DVDs you could use on your computer.

At secondary level there is no substitute for regular schools in normal circumstances.

They have the specialist teachers and equipment in the various key subjects - and staff will be up familiar with exam and curriculum

As Ipswichpar says, the social (and sports) aspects of school is very important to a developing teenager,

This isn't a criticism of the school and their endeavours - it has been a fantastic response - however the latest update confirms that S3 will remain on a broad curriculum until the New Year (at least).

It effectively means that a year it is all but written off and to compensate that are going to start the NAT5 in January (ie 6 months early and without the background learning) in order to catch up with the curriculum and exams in 4th year.

I can't help the feeling that the kids, teachers and parents are fast becoming demoralised as it must have a negative effect on pupil performance.

JTH123 - did you pick up on the underlying tone which suggests that it may not be possible to provide some of the elective subjects?

Apologies folks - fully agree with the importance of the social aspect of attending a school.

Perhaps I should have made the subject "Additional Tutoring"

My daughter had an English tutor a couple of years ago 2015-17. From what I remember it was £30 an hour. The guy we used came through from east of Kirkcaldy, so we were better doing 2hour sessions at £50. That said she went from unlikely to pass to a B in her Nat5

I wouldn't worry too much about times and stuff Bigfoot, at least officially schools are meant to do Broad General Education in S3 anyway before specialising in S4. The fact many don't, and that different schools offer different numbers of subjects etc is a shambles and a nationwide issue.

In terms of tutoring, I've done it for Physics before but success depends on whether the pupil is prepared to work or not. Some think that merely sitting for an hour, lazily leafing through their notes will magically turn a fail in the prelims into an A. Others properly embrace it and do past papers, come armed with questions about stuff they are unsure about, ask for techniques to help them with calculations or whatever.

Bigfoot - not really; only that it would take a while.
What is starting to irk me a bit though is the lack of information relating to my S4's subject he is doing 1 afternoon a week at Carnegie College (or was until the fire).
There has been a complete lack of info about it in the newsletters and 2 emails have gone unanswered.

Didn't imagine Kelty would be into the tarot cards and tea leaves caper.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed
