Virgin will only commit to the 200mb speed if it's via an ethernet cable from your Virgin router. When I was with that absolute shower this was what I was told by the advisor.
Yes, Virgin are usually the fastest broadband provider but they also have awful customer care and regular in-contract price hikes.

Can't talk highly enough of the service I get from Virgin. By far the best broadband provider out there. Alas its not available to every area.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Have you tried moving the B end to a closer socket? That might show how much your wiring pays a part.
Also, is there stuff near the router which might be interfering?
Have you tried at different times of day? Washing machines, microwaves and other things can all have a big impact on BB.

Make sure you are plugged straight into the socket, no extensions etc.
Home plugs are a bit naff, good enough to extend covered for browsing etc but the throughout and latency is always going to suffer, 80mg is pretty good for most things what are you hooking up to the homeplugs? Gaming?
Jake, all isps will use a hardwired connection to prove/test speeds it's the only way.

I crawled under the house to install Ethernet cables - sore work but worth it.
Not everybody has that option of course.

Not disputing Virgin's approach. Just highlighting they'd only consider a complaint about speeds valid if the speed was measured at the primary source (same as any provider).
They were still utterly incompetent in numerous occasions with me, though.

Agreed. My flat has myself and someone else, both fairly big on streaming, downloading, gaming etc and we haven't had a single issue with them for the last 3 years since leaving BTs line system.

If you need more than 80mg at the other end of the power line, then you'll need to upgrade the power line or run an ethernet cable, that's assuming you've proved you are getting 200mg hardwired into the virgin router
