I know under two hours to run a marathon is a great achievement but after reading this article it is almost like cheating

It was a marathon in distance only the rest was set up as near as possible for perfection ......weather, wind, humidity, laser pace cars, computer running formation, rebuilding bits of road to lessen the camber, etc etc

I know where you're coming from but you get that in a lot of sports.

In F1 the focus on designing a car that will give drivers the upper hand is huge.

In football, depending on who your opponent is you might cut the grass, you might not. You might water the grass, you might not. If you're going to be a tight defensive side, you might narrow the pitch. You always make the away team dressing room as basic as you can get away with and your own as good as it can be. All those little decisions are geared to giving you small bits of an advantage that hopefully make a difference for you.

I don't see that as anything too different from making an athletics track a quick one. The boy still has to go out and do it even though he's been given the best chance possible.

Yeah, but he still physically ran the distance in under 2 hours. He ran faster than the majority can sprint for 26 miles and did it faster than any human in history (that we know of at least).

Yeah it wasn't a 'proper' marathon in terms of rules and regulations, but they've never claimed, before or after, that they were aiming for that.

Why do people feel like they have go out their way to find the negative in everything?

...ken?

Was going to add that lpf he still had to do it but it was not a marathon per se but an attempt to break the 26 mile record which was hugely loaded to help him

Was there no already a thread on this when it happened?
Or did I imagine it?
Anyhoo... It was never promoted as a race... It was promoted as a world record attempt.
He done it... Nobody can take that away from him.

But he does also have the quickest time for an official marathon at 4 hours 1 minute something.

Not being negative EEB but it should have been done in a proper marathon with proper runners

The way it was set up takes the shine off it for me
But hey a great achievement none the less

In a real marathon, he's ran 2:01:39, so I'm not sure that it not being a proper marathon really takes the shine off?

Have a look at the videos on YouTube of people trying to run that pace - it's incredible.

Wonder how many fat baldy fitba supporters have run 26 miles in under 2 hours?

I'm a bit underwhelmed with the sub-2 thing. Not because I don't recognise the athletic ability required to run at that pace, but because 2:01 and the like are incredible times in their own right. Someone will eventually run sub-2 in a real race, and I'd just rather it was allowed to happen organically rather than this recent attempt which seems (to me) to cheapen it slightly.

I say that as someone who was a keen runner for a while, before injury got the better of me.

Looks like his footwear has been banned now

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/51292147

'The 5 fastest marathons of all time have been run in the last 16 months by athletes wearing varying forms of the Vaporfly technology'.

Apparently allows you to run 4-5% faster than in 'normal shoes'

Do folk think the trainers are cheating, is it not technology progressing ?
In golf, balls and equipment have been revolutionised to make distance and control easier, is that cheating ?
I'm not convinced its cheating

Westie unless the runner who runs fastest or the golfer who hits longest have these modern technology aids before they are mainstream for all

There's loads of sports where individual /team's technological advances are part and parcel of the sport or are utilised...
By that logic froome cheated his way to the tour de France as sky had loads of small tech advances, Hamilton cheated to win f1 due to Mercedes innovations or even England cheated their 2003 rugby world Cup win with their own developed
prozone solution?
