I was struggling to follow episode 2 - kept jumping from "present" time to five years hence and back again - I think !!!
I always thought the tripod machines had a protective shield - didn't seem to be working last night.

That would be the Orson Welles radio broadcast in the USA 1938.
The story of what transpired makes an interesting read.
