Remedial action to address issues caused by long links
Topic Originator: widtink
Date:   Wed 1 Apr 13:17

There was recently a need to start a second thread on a topic as the number of long links posted onto the original thread were causing problems for folk not using the app.
Until this issue is resolved we would be grateful if you could use a link shortener if you are posting a long link.
Link shortners are available on Google play if you're on android... I'm assuming it's the same for iPhones.
They're easy to use... And it will save a whole heap of trouble on the desktop version as this was where the trouble was.
I've just downloaded one from Google play and it seems easy to use.... (I'm not exactly a techy guy so if I can do it, it's easy peasy) So please think before posting excessively long links as they might have to be removed until the issue is fixed.
Thank you kindly.

Alternatively, you can format your link so it shows words you choose instead of the actual link. These two links have the same URL:

https://dafc.net/forum/list.php?f=7

off topic

In both cases what you see is the text between the "]" of the opening URL tag and the "[" of the closing one.

If you want to do it the second way, put your url in the tag. Here's how...

There's three parts to a link (using the above as an example):
1 - Opening tag. Inside square brackets write "url=https://dafc.net/forum/list.php?f=7". (The other way just has "url").

2 - The text you want to show, in this case "off topic". (This is where you would previously have pasted the url).

3 - Closing tag. Same for both ways, "/url" inside another set of square brackets.

Sorry if that sounds complicated, but it you could do it the first way you can do it the second way. Also, apologies for not being able to just write it out - doing that would turn it into a link.

I'm having a go:

1 -

square bracket url=https://dafc.net/forum/list.php?f=7 square bracket

2 -

square bracket url=https://dafc.net/forum/list.php?f=7 squarebracket off topic

3 - as above, plus, on the end: square bracket /url square bracket

If I've done it right this should be a hot-link:

off topic

It has worked. Where I've used the words 'square bracket' I mean use the symbol [ or ]. No spaces between any of it.

Widders,

I appreciate the need to put this thread on off topic forum to get maximum views - d'you think it should also be copied onto Admin forum, so it's likely to stay on the first page for a good while, for easy reference?

VEE,

on the end, just add the usual stuff:

[ / url ] (without spaces)

So the complete arrangement is as follows, (but without any spaces:)

[ url = https://dafc.net/forum/list.php?f=7 ] off topic [ / url ]

Keep going. If you've managed parts 1 & 2, you're almost there.

This is how it feels when you get it:

When I got it I did a "yee-ha!" like the cowboys. When I read that you'd done it VEE, in my head I started to hear, "The hills are alive with the sound of music..."

There's a song in that film goes "When I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favourite things and then I don't feel so bad"

I think it should be "When I'm feeling sad, I simply take remedial action to address issues caused by long links - and then I don't feel so bad!"

Such a catchy number, shouldn't it be made freely available to the world? Could make dotnet a global phenomenon. More Pars fans in Vanuatu!

String of Pars - hey that's nice. If I had a bit more of that I could think everything was hunky-dory.

Black and white rag - Yeh it makes everything feel 'A' OK.

I'm gonna listen to some more: You don't know me - That's niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice, like an audio massage.

Strange, after over two decades of this forum, there still isn't an easy way to post links or pictures but I guess this platform doesn't allow for the 21st century.

More brain-teasers please. For me it's a wee bit of brain exercise, even more necessary in this 'Lockdown Age' (There was the Jurassic, the Stone Age and now we're in the 'Lockdown Age').

You've heard of Piltdown Man, here's Lockdown Man in a couple o' months:

Once explained I have found it very straightforward to post links, most recently in the convenient abbreviated form - thanks to onandupthepars.

imgbb is an excellent free to use website for manipulating images.

There may be easier/quicker methods ? However, if it ain't broke.................

I take it you can't use the <> method for the shortend url links?

My problem with the shortened links is that you don't know what you are clicking on. I'm sure nobody on here would deliberately send us to a dodgy site but with an unedited link you can at least see if it's an address for the BBC or YouTube, etc.
Anyways onandupthepars can you explain how to post images or is too complicated to explain?

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

As 11:48 yesterday - I recommend imgbb.

https://imgbb.com/

Register.................then upload an image from your file folder and it gives the various codes (different size options) to copy - then paste straight over on to a message.

This might help ?

Fair point TOWK. I suppose if we post a short link, we could also post the address, without making it a hot-link.

e.g

Happy days

https://youtu.be/eZqwc0ElX88?t=5

<<< Anyways onandupthepars can you explain how to post images or is too complicated to explain?>>>

Posting images from internet, or from your own camera and files, TOWK?

We had fun with these issues on Admin forum thread. 'How to post a link. images and film clips' (on Admin forum page: click at bottom: 'older messages', then about halfway down the page, Sat 27 Oct)

I've rarely posted my own pictures, but when I did, I think I used share2.co.uk, as recommended to me by Widtink (there's a hot-link for it below this message box that I'm typing in now.)

Buffy recommended 'tinypic.com', so if you want to try it, maybe she could help.

I've never used imgbb.

You seem to be getting on now TOWK. I have to go now, got an internet meeting to attend this evening, first time for me. πŸ‘
