From what I can gather he is not really a new suspect. The Portuguese police were aware of him at the time of the investigation and discounted him from their enquiries.

Can't see what UK funding would have to do with a German police investigation though.
I thought the same but is there any link between the German national paid from the budget funding of the Mcann’s?
For example is the person in Germany publicising this is having or has had any funding from the McCann coffers.
I don’t know but think it is a valid question.

The poor girl will have been dead over a decade now... And why has her disgusting parents no been thrown in jail yet? Who drugs a kid, then abandons them to go out for food and drinks? How the feck have they twisted this to come out as the victims?

As I pointed out earlier this new suspect is not really new at all. He was known to the Portuguese police at the time of the crime and investigated as a possible suspect. It turns out photos of him were shown to persons who worked in the apartments but he was not recognised. It's possible that the police allowed him to slip through their hands but, given the international pressure on them at the time, that hardly seems likely.
This nasty character is due for release from prison soon and it seems to me the German police are looking for ways to keep him remanded, especially since he is a suspect in other unsolved crimes.

What's depressing is he's seemingly linked with other child disappearances that noone seems to remember. There's something not right with the McCann's.

Andrew, that's been explained the last few times this has come up. If you weren't around, or have forgotten, there's at least two years' worth of threads still here so you could look them up.
Sammer, correct me if I'm wrong. He's in jail in Germany, he's due for release but they think he might be responsible for the disappearance of a German girl in Germany and a Germany boy in Portugal but to keep him in jail the Germans need to also accuse him of the disappearance of a British girl in Portugal?
Jake, I'm also baffled by a lot of this. We keep hearing that this is world famous as if children going missing is an extremely rare event. Why does the world know about her but no one here has ever heard about a single missing child beyond our shores?

parsfan,
I think the German police could keep this suspect in custody if they have reason to believe he is responsible for other crimes. Given his history bail could be denied quite easily on grounds of reasonable suspicion, even if that was in a foreign country.
The German police are the ones pushing this line of enquiry which indicates to me they have their own reasons for doing so. The Portuguese police, who are now very different persons not involved with the original case, have shown little interest in the claim since they already have files on this man.

Well there ye go :-
German prosecutors say they may have to drop the investigation into a convicted paedophile suspected of killing Madeleine McCann if they do not receive more information from the public.
Investigators told the BBC they have substantial evidence that Madeleine is dead - but this is not enough to take the suspect to court.

It’s possible to convict for murder without a body but only when there is convincing circumstantial evidence, which does not seem to be the case here.
The German police have been quoted as claiming they have evidence the girl is dead and that they have a good idea of where she died and how she was killed. Presumably they cannot state what this evidence is but I strongly suspect it must be a great deal less than what most of us understand by the term ‘evidence.’
The Portuguese police also believed that the girl was dead and also thought they knew where and what had happened, but were unable to bring charges. Their suspect was not the one recently exposed by the German police.

"Investigators told the BBC they have substantial evidence that Madeleine is dead - but this is not enough to take the suspect to court."
That's the bit I can't get my head around - how "substantial" can it be if it doesn't meet the evidence criteria required to make formal charges ?
Also, how do the Federal German police have jurisdiction for a crime allegedly committed in Portugal ?

I read yesterday but can't find it again ?
That the German police have an online discussion between the suspect and another paedophile about what he was going to do to the young girls before he killed them
I wonder if that is what the evidence is based on ?

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are searching an allotment in Hanover, German prosecutors have told the BBC.
They confirmed it was related to the investigation into Christian B, a sex offender in prison in Germany, who is the main suspect in the case.

He is the main suspect in the eyes of the German police but not, I think, the Portuguese police. He is a dangerous man who the Germans understandably want behind bars but I would be astonished if any link to the McCann girl is found in Germany.

Wow. A stay at home detective now. There is no end to your talents
Or perhaps someone who had studied the case.
Just over two weeks ago, German investigators went into disused Portuguese wells and found no trace at all yet they have said publicly, Maddie is definitely dead.
On what evidence?
He ( Christian B) might have 'admitted' doing it but it could just be his perverted mind playing out a fantasy.

Apparently the German police don't have enough evidence to charge the guy, so how can they state she is dead with any certainty ?
