I read a hefty book about the Civil War years ago, and was surprised to discover that the casualties were greater than the combined total of US losses in both World Wars and the Korean War.
After further revision they are now thought to exceed those plus the Vietnam war. A terrible bloodbath indeed.

"If you have Prime, Ken Burns Civil War is worth a watch"

It's been on PBS America on Freeview a couple of times as well.

The casualty rates were horrendous - muzzle loading rifled weapons and the Minie ball being a significant factor.

Interesting little fact related to the American Civil War. The last pension paid for said conflict ended only this year.

Amazing story.

It also confirms that if you are contemplating desertion to the other side - make sure you choose the eventual winner !!!

Almost as fascinating as the story of Joe Beyrle, the US paratrooper who landed in Normandy on D-Day and later fought alongside the Red Army on the Eastern Front.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Beyrle

His son John became the US Ambassador to Russia in 2008.

If Hollywood punted this storyline it would be ridiculed !!!

Lots of deaths in US Civil war were due to unsanitary conditions in the camps. More people died from disease than combat deaths. Also a lot died after being wounded as well as didn’t have the medical treatment we take for granted now.

A fact wasn’t really aware of until recently is that the US reported 116,000 deaths in WW1 but of those 63,000 were due to Spanish flu. So more deaths to disease than combat deaths.

Watched David Hyman as narrator on "Clydebuilt" yersterday (PBS America) - an excellent documentary focusing largely on the blockade runner paddle steamers built for the Confederates to supply arms and ammunition etc. to the South during the Civil War.

They reckoned that the war would have ended 2 years earlier had the Confederacy not had these munitions.

Another programme worth watching.
