A Fife soldier carried hame

…………………………………………………………..

And his last thoughts and memories

…………………………………………………………...

Yer wee pride and joy

I’m coming back hame tae Fife Mam, yer wee pride an joy
I’ll hide behind the curtains, like ah did, when ah wis a boy
Will ye pretend no to see me, the same as aw they years ago
Can we play cairds and draughts Mam please dinnae say no

Will ye make me mince and tatties Mam its still ma favourite tea
Can we go back tae Burntisland, to laugh an paddle, in the sea
Kin still see the Abbey’s dark silhouette agin the red sunset sky
Might never see ye again Mam, still dinnae ken the reason why

Ma feet are sair and ma uniform’s damp Mam stuck in this mud hole
Can hear the guns, see pals wounded, too late noo for yer wee soul
The soldiers have carried me for miles, jist tae get me back hame
Up tae the braw Kirk Mam but never saw ye there, thats a shame

Is there really a gate up there Mam, and will ye be waiting there
Will ye still hold ma hand, as we climb the tired bedroom stair
We’re in a better place an back the gither, ah heard some folk say
The Minister called me a hero Mam, an said ah saved the day

Ah’m glad ah’m back hame Mam the Wee Toon where ah wis born
Canny wait for ma bedtime kiss, an hear ye say, see ye the Morn
Can see ma hoose an the fields, where ah played as a young boy
I’m back hame an at peace in Fife Mam, yer wee pride and joy

…………………………………………………………………………

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month
Too late for so many poor brave souls

Lest we forget

We are forever shaped by the Children we once were

Sobering

The carnage of WW1 prompted a government policy in WW2 that siblings were prevented from serving in the same local infantry regiments.

In the Great War whole communities had been devestated by losses when a local battalion was decimated, exacerbated where brothers were KIA.
