Just went to pick up some repeat meds for my ancient cat. No vet interaction - I called, asked for the meds on their answerphone, and picked them up from the counter assistant. £57.
Looked online for the same meds - £18 quid, £3 delivery.....and presumably this supplier is also making an acceptable profit.
Complained about their costs by email - and was assured that someone will respond in 21 days.

You'll probably find that you need a prescription to order online - which vets will charge for!

You are right, you do need a prescription. Just find it galling they are charging 300% more than online.

Some online pet shops have people who can handle prescriptions. Worth checking.
Remember that the vet will still be covering their surgery costs and that qualification allowing them to prescribe wasn't free either.

They are not regulated as far as i believe parfor so they can charge what they like
On the prescription thing I have been buying worm tablets online and as long as you fill in all the pets details they will send them
Also pets at home will sell them if you register your pets details with them
The same worm tablets from my vet........ 1 for £14
Online 3 for £12 ....... same tablet
Just had the dog get her booster jab .....£57 ?

Always worth checking what you can legitimately buy online or from Pets at home. No need for you to get a vet to worm* or apply flea treatment. Frontline can be bought cheaply in Pets at home (you'll need someone to get it as they have to check you're not an idiot). Do NOT buy online as there are so many fakes being sold.
*Though they do make it look much easier than it is!

I wouldn't buy online from ebay or someone that sells everything and anything but there are reputable pet med sellers that just have low overheads.

When I talked about buying online for 18 quid, I didn't mean eBay. I found the same meds from an online animal dispensary. Take the point though about a vet practice having some fixed costs to recoup.

Always thought there's a real parallel between our vet system and US healthcare. Let's just be thankful we have the NHS.

I got charged £20 for five omeprazol for my dog. I’ve got like ten packs of the stuff in the cupboard for my own heart burn that I get in 28’s for nout! Also got charged £140 call out fee as they recommended they ‘pop to the house’. They’re five mins away. Consultation time the exact same as it would have been in house, which I got charged for too, additionally... need i go on

I pay my monthly fee, same as before this, and have no access apart from his six monthly check and get flea and worm tablets till the next.Do wonder if it really is worth so much money for weight twice a year, injections and tablets.
Had a fright early on,before this, when he snapped a stick in the back of his mouth and I couldn`t get to it.Immediately up to vet and bill was £394 including £50 for an x-ray.This was directly opposite my dentist who charge me £10 for an x-ray.

My brother in law’s dog broke his leg and total vet bills were in excess of £3k - I pay for annual cover that feels extortionate but I’m going to keep paying it.

No doubt about it they are bigger parasites than anything they might remove from your pets.
Ridiculous fees. They really cash in on the fact we love our pets so much. Care for animals my bottom . Profiteers, nothing less.

Is that not a standard NHS dental fee ?

Pets have become significantly more important across society.
Their integral role as a family member means closer and stronger attachments are formed and with that a much more sense of responsibility for their health and welfare.
I believe that the veterinary sector capitalised on this. Some of the costs are ridiculous and in my opinion close to criminal.

I also got Frontline from Amazon and after I gave it to the cat it was tired and pretty much lifeless for 3 days. Visit to the vet didn't help much and although it perked up a bit, she was never the same after and died a couple of months after. I would think twice about buying offline again

Sorry to hear that. I was lucky that I was aware of the fake packets. They look almost perfect and most people wouldn't notice. All down to how the wee plastic bits are branded. Mine was returned to Amazon with a big complaint.

Update from the vet.
A prescription for 2 items would be £38 (just the piece of paper, not the drugs).
So, send the prescription to the internet dispensary, £18 for the drugs, plus delivery of £3 comes to £59, making the vet £2 cheaper!
A bargain!
