 Fife Council - reported missing
Topic Originator: jake89
Date:   Mon 8 Feb 19:43

It was reported earlier than Fife Council has had its entire fleet of gritters stolen. At least that's why I'm assuming they haven't gritted anywhere despite prior warning.

Good luck to anyone getting vaccinated tomorrow if they're not sending out gritters later. Farcical.

grit under the snow isn't gonna do anything though especially on non primary routes.

its the ploughs that are needed

Already been through my bit tonight but the volume of snow in a short space of time ,allied with the temp and wind means they're fishing in the wind. Given the Amber warning might need ploughs on for tomorrow am. Cleared my drive earlier, salted it, got it clear and went in and got my tea, looked out 20 mins later and it was 2" deep. Pushed 5 cars up the hill this evening too.

Raymie, the map is just for trunk roads.

Got to consider many are being expected to travel some distance for their vaccination. I'm lucky that I could walk to East End from my house but try that if you're a 70 year old in Limekilns.

Appreciate it's a hard job when the snow keeps coming but appears to have been no pre-treating.

School in the early sixties - pre elf and safety!

There was a male teacher at Camdean, Mr Carr. If there wasn’t already a snowball battle on the go at playtime the first one that whistled past your lug would be his.

Probably get struck off for that these days.

What's the benefit of doing the trunk roads if you can't get out of towns/villages onto them?

I'm assuming the main roads in Dunfermline have now been cleared and treated? All I can see from our house is a load of snow covered roads. I'll need to find a shovel to do the road...worrying thing is that I think the shovel may be under snow in the back garden! 😂

They're currently doing roadworks in my street and we're obviously worried about losing out on overtime cos the contractors JCB has just cleared the road of snow with his big shovel thingy.

I remember in the 70’s the whole street would come out and do their civic duty and clear their street and that would work all the way up and down the other streets where I lived.

Now folk just stand looking out the window with crossed arms and pursed lips shouting about the council.

We did that it my street after the last beast. At least half the street were out. Probably will do again in the day or 2. Bloody hard work clearing your section of hard packed stuff on the road when it's 4" thick.

My neighbour and I cleared our street when it was the beast from the east digging everyone out also. Made my blood boil though when you realised folk were standing watching you dig them out then once you had finished they came out and buggered off in there car no thanks or anything. We had the odd person come out and offer cups of tea coffee or a beer but not many. Also had certain football players who played with dunfermline and never even came out to help and just watched

Had the same experience last time.A few of us cleared our street.A family stood and watched us from their window. Three teenagers, and mum and dad.He moaned later, about not clearing the top of his drive. Some folks have some nerve ! He got a suitable answer back.

Me and the neighbour were out doing the Steep section on our street this morning, that nobody could get up last night. Not a soul came out to help. The only ones that waved or gave a thumbs up were the van drivers. Truly miserable barstewards. He's only recently moved in and was bemoaning the lack of community spirit.

We did it too back in 2018. Problem is if main roads aren't done.

The other issue is Fife Council removed a lot of grit bins in the past couple of years to save money.

Opening post is like something from the comment section on Fife Jammers.

I work for the council, and I deal with calls for gritting requests. Our entire fleet of gritters were out overnight, all night into this morning. Pre-treating and clearing. Unfortunately you can put all the grit in the country down, it will not stop snow lying.

unfortunately that doesn't matter to some folk who think the gritters should be out 24/7 and would have totally stopped the conditions of the roads today

Athletico, how is that the main roads north and south into the town are in such a poor state. ? Should the priority not be to keep these clear ? I understand it would involve quite a few runs back and forth.
Genuine question.

Thanks

Athletico, can you grit my road? Never been done in 18 years (and counting) 😂

Appreciate it's a hard task but fair to say the council doesn't adequately resource this. They're starved of funds but it's still frustrating that a country like Scotland can't deal with something that happens every year.

I’ll post something positive.

Great job done by the road workers, I managed to get into the work (centre of Edinburgh) from my wee fife village today in the same time it would normally take as all the main trunk roads were completely clear.

Grit on snow, without salt does not work. They are just putting, sand ,in so called grit boxes. Just makes,a muddy mess.!

The other thing is all the gritters I have seen have an attachment at the front for a snow plough, but none have a plough attached (the trunk road ones do, but not the Fife Council ones). Maybe if they removed the snow then gritted it would help!

To be fair, BigJ, folks are frustrated with what they see as a failure to keep our mains roads open. ( Main road east to west and north to south into town. )
If there was some clarity and understanding about issues facing the Council Roads department, it would maybe help?

Cant fault them other than no ploughs attached, been up my road 6 times in 48hrs.This morning there was a partial blockage by a car. The driver stopped level, let a load of grit out the back and then carried on allowing us to shovel it where it was needed. Think the main issue on side roads is folk not getting off their butt and doing a bit of shovelling out on the road outside their house.

Glad you are managing to get about. I also was able to get into work.

Nobody expects all roads to be open.

The main road from the West was blocked for hours yesterday at Urquhart Cut.

A bus was stuck in Pittencrieff Street yesterday and only released around 7pm

Not asking for miracles, just the main routes.

Moaning about moaning 😂

Can't see the main roads having been done around Duloch. Linburn Road still looks a state and you could plow that as it has wide pavements and grass.

Fair play to the guys being out.

The roads, not the rest of it. Though I'd say Falkirk Council do a far better job in terms of economic development than Fife Council do. Fife keep flogging a dead horse by investing in Kirkcaldy over and over.

High street, roundabouts, the prom, John Smith business park. Also spending the majority of the Scottish Government town centre funding on Kirkcaldy, including a fair chunk on the Adam Smith theatre after admitting their "shovel ready" projects weren't that shovel ready afterall!
